All The Light We Cannot See Summary

In this story, Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks.

When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind, and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home.

When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea.

They carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel with them.

Meanwhile, in a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find.

Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance.

More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

All the Light We Cannot See Quotes

At the time of this interview, Anthony Doerr had already been on the New York Times best-seller list for twenty weeks. He certainly doesn’t need this interview for a promotion.

Anthony Doerr All the Light We Cannot See

The Best Anthony Doerr Books (Exclusive Author Interview)

What was it like spending a decade on this book, and did you ever feel discouraged while writing it?

Oh, I was crazy with doubt almost of the time.

You invest so many months into a single project—shelves stuffed with WWII books, three separate trips to Europe, dozens of scribbled notes, and the terror that you won’t be able to pull it all together keeps you up at night.

I worried that if I abandoned the project, I’d let down my wife, kids, editor, and myself.

And I never dreamed it would take so long—a quarter of my life!

The story beautifully centers around radio communication bringing unlikely individuals together. What inspired your choice to delve into radio, and did researching older radio models and their workings play a significant role in crafting this plotline?

I adored radios as a boy and often stayed up late listening to baseball games under my covers while my parents thought I was sleeping.

But that passion had waned until ten years ago, when I took a train from Princeton, New Jersey, into New York City.

I had just completed a novel and was searching for a new idea, and I had a notebook in my lap.

The man in the seat in front of me was talking to someone on his cell phone about the sequel to The Matrix, I remember that very clearly, and as we approached Manhattan, sixty feet of steel and concrete started flowing above the train, his call dropped.

 And he got angry!

He started swearing and rapping his phone with his knuckles, and after briefly worrying for my safety, I said to myself: What he’s forgetting, what we’re all forgetting, is that what he was just doing is a miracle.

He’s using two little radios — a receiver and a transmitter — crammed into something no bigger than a deck of cards to send and receive little packets of light between hundreds of radio towers, one after the next, miles apart, each connecting to the next at the speed of light, and he’s using this magic to have a conversation about Keanu Reeves.

Because we’re habituated to it, we’ve stopped seeing the grandeur of this breathtaking act.

So I decided to write something that would help me and my reader feel that power again, to feel the strangeness and sorcery of hearing the voice of a stranger, or a distant loved one, in our heads.

That very afternoon, ten years ago, I wrote a title into my notebook: All the Light We Cannot See—a reference to all the invisible wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum (like radio waves).

And that night, I started a piece of fiction in which a girl reads a story to a boy over the radio.

I conceived of her as blind and him as trapped in darkness, and the sound of her voice, carried by radio waves – the light we cannot see — through walls, as his salvation.

My heart went out to Werner, especially during his time in the Hitler Youth and the difficult choices he had to make for survival.

The book delves into themes of death, war, sadness, and poverty, despite the underlying hope in the story’s conclusion. Writing about this challenging period in history must have been tough.

Can you share which scene was the most challenging for you to write?

Yes, lots of the research for this novel was excruciating.

The destruction of human beings during WWII, especially on the Eastern Front, occurred on a scale almost too large for the human brain to comprehend.

Sometimes, the source material would send me to dark places, and I’d have to take breaks to work on other projects.

As for scenes that were hard to write, a writer faces many kinds of difficulties: technical, emotional, and syntactic.

In terms of emotions, all the scenes involving Frederick were the most difficult because he reminds me of one of my sons.

Marie-Laure’s father’s intricate puzzles add so much beauty to your story.

It made me wish I could find a puzzle for my kids to solve.

How did you come up with this concept?

A friend of our family once gave me a Japanese puzzle box as a present.

It was a wooden cube that looked like an ornate, solid block of wood. No visible doors, no knobs, no handles, no buttons.

But, as our family friend showed me if you knew what side to push in on, then various panels would start to slide down, and by manipulating all the panels in clever ways, you could eventually slide open the top and discover a hidden compartment inside.

I played with that thing for hours, showing it off to friends, examining its construction, etc., then eventually put it on a shelf and forgot about it.

A couple of decades later, while working on this novel, the puzzle box came back to me, along with my fascination with it, and I decided to try writing a couple of scenes in which Marie-Laure’s father fashions puzzle boxes.

Which character do you identify the most within your book?

I do my best to identify with all my characters, even the bad actors—I think that’s probably part of the job description for any novelist, isn’t it?

This novel has 187 chapters beautifully segmented and sectioned for the reader in small doses. Why did you decide to structure your story this way?

Obviously, there are infinite ways to write a novel, but for me, “plotting it out” has always sounded scary and programmatic.

I have to compose, revise, and re-revise scenes to understand what should happen.

So my process involves a lot of trial and error. I write hundreds of paragraphs trying to figure out where the story is going, and I usually cut most of them.

I knew early on that I wanted the two narratives to feel like two almost parallel lines that gently inclined toward each other.

The structure was a big mess for a long time.

It probably had 250 or 300 chapters at some points.

All I knew early on — and wanted a reader to intuit – was that Marie’s and Werner’s lives would intersect.

But it took me a long time to figure out exactly how that would happen.

If you could tell anyone to read one book (other than your own), what would that book be?

Oh, gosh, my answer to this question changes all the time, but a novel I’m absolutely in love with right now is Karen Joy Fowler’s We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves

It’s about family, siblinghood, memory, storytelling, and particularly about our society’s treatment of animals.

It’s also structured in this beautiful, organic, perfect way—I hope a few of your readers will look at it!

How to Make a Burlap Wreath

Learn how to make a burlap wreath with a wire wreath frame and burlap ribbon. This beginner craft takes 30 minutes. and can be customized for any holiday.

I am all about beautiful and simple decorations for the holidays. Today’s tutorial will show you how to make a simple burlap wreath that can be customized for any holiday.

This is a no-sew, no-glue, no-cut wreath project that should be easy to create in about 30 minutes.

How to Make a Burlap Wreath

Burlap ribbon does not only come in brown. There are so many different colors and patterns to choose from.

At the end of this post, you can see how I made a beautiful fall wreath in orange burlap.

Before you visit your craft store, make sure to sign up with Rakuten to make money back on all your craft store purchases.

Gather your supplies. You will need burlap ribbon, a wire wreath form, mini clothespins, floral picks, floral wire, scissors, and wallet-size holiday photos.

Easy Burlap Wreath Tutorial

Get wallet-sized photos printed or print them at home with a mini photo printer.

How to Make a Burlap Wreath

Now let’s begin weaving the burlap through our wire wreath form.

This is going to take a little time and practice with your first one so don’t get discouraged.

Begin by folding your burlap in half, like I have shown above, and keep it folded like this as we go.

Select one section of the wire wreath to start in.

How to Make a Burlap Wreath

Feed the beginning end through the wreath as shown above.

Leave a little loose end to tuck in or you can wire it to the wreath with a little floral wire in the back.

How to Make a Burlap Wreath

Over the outer ring, under the next, over the next, and under to finish.

How to Make a Burlap Wreath

This is the technique we are using throughout.

I am showing it to you tightly so you can see how this will work, when you do this, you will be actually pulling out the burlap a bit to give it to that bubble effect that we are going for.

Begin right next to the previous row, within the same section of the metal wreath.

However, this time, we’ll weave in the opposite direction.

As you go along, keep pulling out the burlap to create bubbles. Move the working burlap into each section, alternating the weaving direction.

How to Make a Burlap Wreath

When you run out of burlap (it should be when you are about halfway through covering the wreath), tuck the end towards the back and pick up where you left off.

Again, you can wire these ends with a little floral wire on the back.

How to Make a Burlap Wreath

Finish the wreath with your holiday accessories.

You can trim any of the pieces down that were wired to help your wreath lay more flush to your front door.

Wouldn’t this just make the most fabulous little gift for someone you love for the holidays? I’ve provided some bulk purchasing options if you want to make more than one wreath.

Happy crafting!

Leave a little loose end to tuck in or you can wire it to the wreath with a little floral wire (or zip tie) in the back.
How to Make a Burlap Wreath
  4. Using the end of the burlap you're working with, begin creating burlap bubbles right next to the previous row, in the same section of the metal wreath. However, this time, weave it in the opposite direction.
Keep pulling and forming bubbles in the burlap as you proceed.
Move the working burlap into each section, first weaving in one direction and then in the other direction.
Each fold should be about 4-6 inches wide. The continuous piece of burlap will naturally form a series of loops or bubbles.
How to Make a Burlap Wreath
  5. When you run out of burlap (it should be when you are about halfway through covering the wreath), tuck the end towards the back and pick up where you left off. Again, you can wire these ends with a little floral wire on the back.
How to Make a Burlap Wreath
  6. Once the entire wreath is covered, secure the final end with floral wire.
  7. Begin puffing up some of the folded bubbles (if desired) or you can leave them as is, if you prefer a more ruffled, rather than bubbly effect.
  8. Finish the wreath by hot gluing or wiring two floral picks on the wreath. Attach a few of your favorite holiday portraits with those mini-clothespins.

Notes

You can use a small amount of hot glue, not too excessively to attach your floral pick. These floral picks can be switched for the seasons.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about this recipe:

How Many Cups Are in a Can of Pumpkin?

How Many Cups Are in a Can of Pumpkin?

A 15-ounce can of pumpkin contains about 1 ¾ cups of pumpkin. One can of pumpkin is needed for this recipe.

Can I Use a Different Type of Pasta For This Dish?

While penne and rotini are excellent choices for this creamy pumpkin pasta, you can certainly use other pasta shapes like fettuccine, linguine, or spaghetti.

Just be sure to adjust the cooking time according to the pasta type you choose.

Can You Substitute Pumpkin Puree for Canned Pumpkin in Your Creamy Pumpkin Pasta Recipe?

Absolutely! You can seamlessly swap canned pumpkin for homemade pumpkin puree in many pumpkin recipes.

Both pumpkin puree and canned pumpkin are often used interchangeably due to their similar consistency and flavor profiles.

However, it’s essential to avoid using pumpkin pie filling as a substitute, as it contains added sugars and spices that can significantly alter the flavor of this pumpkin pasta sauce.

What Goes Well with Pumpkin Pasta Sauce?

Roasted Vegetables: Roasted vegetables like green beans, broccoli, or Brussels sprouts complement the pumpkin sauce beautifully.

Sausage: Just like in the recipe you provided, sausage, whether it’s a sweet Italian turkey sausage or a spicy sausage, adds contrast to the creamy pumpkin sauce.

Spinach or Kale: Fresh greens like spinach or kale can be wilted into the sauce for added color, nutrients, and a touch of bitterness that balances the sauce’s richness.

Bacon or Pancetta: Substitute the sausage with crispy bacon or pancetta bits to add a smoky, salty crunch that complements the creamy pumpkin sauce.

Nuts: Toasted nuts like chopped walnuts, pine nuts, pepitas, or pecans sprinkled on top can add a delightful crunch and nutty flavor that contrasts with the creamy sauce.

Dried Cranberries: You can sprinkle some dried cranberries on top for a touch of sweetness. Their tartness can be a lovely contrast to the richness of the sauce.

A Dash of Spice: You can add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a drizzle of balsamic glaze for a subtle kick or a hint of acidity, respectively. Remember, the white pepper in this recipe will already give this recipe a kick.

Ground White Pepper

What is the Difference Between White Pepper and Black Pepper?

White pepper is a milder spice than black pepper, with a subtle, earthy flavor.

You can find it in the spice section of most grocery stores, online retailers, specialty spice shops, or international markets.

It’s commonly used in creamy sauces like this pumpkin pasta dish and incorporated in my chai latte mix which is also popular around the holidays.

Creamy Pumpkin Pasta

Creamy Pumpkin Pasta

Yield: 8 servings
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

Creamy pumpkin pasta is an autumn-inspired dish that combines the rich, velvety goodness of pumpkin puree with a blend of spices for a cozy and comforting meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound package of Sweet Italian Turkey Sausage (removed from its casing)
  • 1 cup to 2 cups pureed pumpkin (adjust to personal taste)
  • 2 cups chicken stock or vegetable stock (chicken broth or vegetable broth work too)
  • 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar
  • ¼ cup half & half
  • ½ cup sour cream (low-fat or fat-free)
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced
  • ¼ cup Romano or Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 1 pound penne or rotini pasta (can substitute with gluten-free)

Instructions

    1. In a large skillet, sauté the garlic in the olive oil over medium heat. Add the turkey sausage and cook until it is no longer pink, breaking the meat up with your spoon as you cook it. Once cooked, remove the turkey sausage and garlic from the skillet.
    2. Pour the chicken stock into the skillet to deglaze the pan. Use a wire whisk to scrape up all of the flavorful bits stuck to the pan.
    3. Whisk in the white wine vinegar, half & half, sour cream, pumpkin puree, nutmeg, salt, white pepper, and sage. Let the sauce simmer for about ten minutes, to allow the flavors to meld together.
    4. While the sauce simmers, boil the penne in salted water until it reaches an al dente texture (approximately 11-12 minutes).
    5. Before draining the cooked pasta, reserve a cup of the pasta water to help thin the sauce later. Once cooked, drain the pasta and set it aside.
    6. Stir the drained pasta into the pumpkin sauce, along with the cooked turkey sausage, and let it simmer for three more minutes or until the sauce thickens and clings to the pasta. Add small amounts of the reserved pasta water to thin as needed.
    7. To finish this dish, garnish it with grated Parmesan or Romano cheese and a sprinkle of parsley.

Notes

Feel free to customize this recipe to suit your taste. You can adjust the amount of pumpkin puree for a stronger or milder pumpkin flavor or experiment with different pasta shapes, as mentioned in the frequently asked question.

The Capsule Wardrobe 2023 Guide You Need Now

Thursday, September 7th, 2023

Building a capsule wardrobe couldn’t be easier with these easy mix and match outfit ideas. Dressed up or dressed down, your capsule wardrobe 2023 guide is here.

The Capsule Wardrobe 2023 Guide You Need Now

Longtime readers know that I’ve embraced a capsule wardrobe for many years.  After many years of buying impulsively, chasing every trend, and spending money on outfits for one-time occasions- I wanted to do better.

Fall Outfit Ideas

Here is a picture from my capsule wardrobe way back in 2015.

This switch marked a significant shift in my shopping habits, prompting me to think more consciously about what I buy and why I need it.

The results have been remarkable, leading to smoother mornings and a profound pride in everything I wear.

I’m an advocate for capsule wardrobes because when you have less clutter in your closet, you can do more with what you have.

Many people begin their capsule experience with a monochromatic approach and gradually explore color after mastering the art of coordination.

Today’s post offers guidance on how to choose those base pieces so you can build your wardrobe out from there.

If you want to embrace the capsule wardrobe trend in 2023, you’ve come to the right place. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore a capsule wardrobe, how to build one, and my favorite finds for the upcoming year.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of essential clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched to create a wide range of outfits.

The goal is to have a compact yet versatile wardrobe that suits your personal style and lifestyle. By carefully selecting classic pieces that complement each other, you can simplify your daily clothing decisions and save money over the years.

A well-planned capsule wardrobe saves you time and money and contributes to a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach to fashion.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

Building a capsule wardrobe may seem daunting at first, but it can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience with the right approach. Here are the key steps to get you started:

thredup cleanout kit

1. Assess Your Current Wardrobe

Before you start purging your closet or making new purchases, closely examine your current wardrobe. Identify your favorite pieces, the items you wear most often, and those that have sentimental value.

These will serve as the foundation of your capsule wardrobe.

I recommend requesting a Clean Out Bag from thredUP and removing any accessories, shoes, clothing, or coats that you no longer wear.

Once the company processes your bag, they can issue a credit that you can use towards seasonal pieces that stand the test of time.

2. Define Your Style and Needs

Consider your personal style preferences and daily lifestyle. Are you more inclined towards casual, classic, or trendy fashion?

Do you need professional attire for work, or is your lifestyle more relaxed? Understanding your personal style and needs will help you make informed choices when selecting new pieces.

This collection of clothing is my Fall 2023 capsule wardrobe, but the capsule collection needs to fit your personality and lifestyle.

3. Create a Color Palette

Choose a color palette for your capsule wardrobe.

Neutral colors like black, white, gray, and beige are popular choices, as they are easy to mix and match.

However, I encourage you to incorporate a few accent colors that complement your style.

The final piece in this set offers textures and patterns to embrace for this season.

Casual Fall Outfit Ideas

4. Choose Versatile Pieces

Opt for versatile clothing items that can be paired with multiple outfits.

Think about items like a well-fitted blazer, a classic white button-down shirt, a pair of dark denim jeans, and a little black dress.

These versatile pieces form the core of your capsule wardrobe.

5. Stick to a Capsule Wardrobe Size

Decide on the number of items you want in your capsule wardrobe. While there’s no one-size-fits-all rule, a typical capsule wardrobe consists of 30-40 pieces, including tops, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear.

If you are a beginner, I recommend Project 333 as a beautiful starting point. I used this as my personal style template for almost a DECADE!

6. Set a Budget and Stick to It

In 2023, sustainability remains a prominent theme in fashion. Consider investing in sustainable, eco-friendly clothing brands prioritizing ethical production practices and materials.

I’m not a fan of fast fashion, so the items featured today are ones that I personally inspected and can attest are made well and  I believe have longevity.

The truth is, most of the items in my wardrobe are secondhand because high quality and eco-friendly items are typically out of my budget.

If  I want splurge items like a trenchcoat, designer bag, or a well-made pair of trousers- I visit consignment shops or use thredUP.

Wherever you shop, don’t forget to activate your Rakuten app when making purchases. You can get cashback rewards on many of the items featured today. If you haven’t used the app before, here is $30 towards today’s purchases.

These items are curated for easy fall shopping. I only recommend what I would buy. The items included were purchased by me or inspected for quality assuredness.

Boiling Potatoes in Cold Water

Boil the Potatoes:

Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water.

Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender, approximately 25-30 minutes.

Drain and Mash:

Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash them using a potato masher or a ricer until smooth and lump-free.

Add Creamy Buttery Additions:

While the potatoes are still warm, add the butter, sour cream, and milk—season with salt and pepper to taste.

Mix until all the ingredients are well incorporated and your mashed potatoes are creamy and fluffy.

Freezing Mashed Potatoes

Cool and Pack:

Allow the mashed potatoes to cool completely. Once cooled, transfer them to freezer-safe containers or resealable bags. Be sure to remove any excess air from the bags to prevent freezer burn.

Freeze Mashed Potatoes:

Label the containers or bags with the date and place them in the freezer. These mashed potatoes can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.

Here are some frequently asked questions about how to make these make-ahead mashed potatoes:

What Potatoes Are Best For Mashed Potatoes

What Potatoes Are Best for Mashed Potatoes?

The best potatoes for mashed potatoes are typically those with a high starch content and a low moisture content. These types of potatoes yield the creamiest and fluffiest mashed potatoes.

The popular potato choices for this make-ahead recipe are Russet and Yukon Gold.

The primary difference in taste between Yukon Gold and Russet potatoes lies in their flavor profiles and textures.

  • Yukon Gold Potatoes: Yukon Gold potatoes are known for their buttery and slightly sweet flavor.  When cooked, they have a creamy, smooth texture, making them an excellent choice for mashed potatoes and gratins. Their thin, yellowish skin is tender and can be left on for added color and texture in various dishes.
  • Russet Potatoes: Russet potatoes, also known as Idaho potatoes, have a mild, earthy flavor with a starchy and dry texture. This makes them ideal for baking, frying, and creating fluffy mashed potatoes. The thicker and rougher skin of Russet potatoes is usually peeled before cooking in most recipes.

For these make-ahead mashed potatoes, I’ve experimented with both varieties, and they turn out beautifully.

I find though that the Yukon Gold potatoes offer a more buttery, creamy texture.

Use Yukon Gold potatoes when possible in your dish.

Are Mashed Potatoes Gluten-Free?

When prepared with ingredients like potatoes, butter, milk, salt, and pepper, mashed potatoes are naturally gluten-free. Potatoes do not contain gluten, so they are safe for individuals with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.

However, it’s essential to be cautious when making mashed potatoes, as certain additives or toppings can introduce gluten. Here are some things to watch out for:

  • Gravy: If you serve mashed potatoes with gravy, use a gluten-free gravy thickener or a gluten-free pre-made gravy mix. Traditional gravy is typically thickened with wheat flour, which contains gluten. Check here for some gluten-free gravy options.
  • Toppings: If you add toppings to your mashed potatoes, such as breadcrumbs, fried onions, or crispy bacon, make sure these are gluten-free. Standard breadcrumbs contain gluten, so you would need to use gluten-free breadcrumbs if desired.

Use fresh, whole ingredients for a gluten-free dish, and check labels for processed items.

Homemade mashed potatoes are usually gluten-free, but it’s a good practice to check the gluten-free status of your ingredients.

How to Make Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes?

Use almond, coconut, or oat milk and dairy-free butter for dairy-free mashed potatoes.

How Do I Reheat Frozen Mashed Potatoes?

To reheat, you have a couple of options.

One of the best methods is to use your slow cooker. The mashed potatoes reheat in crockpot and save room in your oven for the Thanksgiving Turkey.

Place the thawed mashed potatoes in the slow cooker on low heat for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally until heated.

You can also reheat them in the oven. Bake the potatoes at 350 degrees for thirty to forty minutes or until completely hot.

Can I double the recipe for a large gathering?

This recipe is easily scalable. Make sure you have a large pot to accommodate the additional potatoes and adjust the other ingredients accordingly.

I have doubled and tripled the batch for our family gatherings. We rarely have leftovers, and this is always our family’s favorite Thanksgiving side dish.

Make Ahead Turkey Gravy

I recommend preparing these with this make-ahead turkey gravy recipe for topping.

What to Add in Mashed Potatoes

Can I add additional seasonings or toppings to the mashed potatoes?

These mashed potatoes are a blank canvas. Feel free to add garlic, herbs, cheese, or any other favorite toppings or seasonings to customize the flavor.

I have provided instructions for topping with melted butter and paprika.

What Freezer-Safe Container Should I Prepare These Make-Ahead Mashed Potatoes In?

Selecting the proper containers can make all the difference in freezing dishes. Here are some options:

  • Glass or Plastic Containers: If you prefer a more durable, consider investing in glass or BPA-free plastic containers with airtight lids. They can be reused for future freezing needs. I have linked to a great option below.
  • Foil Pans or Containers: These come in various sizes and are ideal for freezing casseroles. They’re easy to stack in the freezer and can be recycled afterward.
