Shower Curtain Art Canvas

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

A rainy day yielded the perfect opportunity to break out one of my dollar store activities for our kids. I bought a shower liner ($1) and had the kids decorate the shower curtain with whatever their heart’s delight was. A package of army men ($1) and a package of lizards ($1) added a little three dimensional fun to their art work on the canvas.

I don’t know about you, but my children like to go through a million pieces of paper a day so this was the perfect canvas for their artistic souls. Since we were on a trip, it also was the perfect item to travel with and break out when the weather was bad.

Want to create your own canvas? Visit Filth Wizardry for their cute idea for creating cute & even roadways for kids using markers and a recycled bottle. It helped inspire our family’s art canvas for our family’s summer vacation and was one of the great ideas featured in our 100 Days of Summer list.

Gain some summer inspiration on our Pinterest 100 days of summer (’12) edition where you can get another amazing round-up of 100 ideas to inspire your summer bucket list.

This list has everything from making homemade butterbeer drinks for those Harry Potter enthusiasts, to making homemade shrinky dinks, to getting back to the basics with great dinner discussions with great family conversation starters.

There is something for everyone on here- boys and girls of all ages and craft levels. The best part is that they are ALL budget-friendly and will cost you very little in supplies.

If you are on Instagram, you can join in on the fun by taking pictures and sharing all of your summer adventures through there. Let’s use the hashtag #100summerdays. My username is momadvice and I am happy to have you follow our adventures and follow along with yours!

Family Travel: Exploring Saugatuck, Michigan

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Our family spent the most glorious week in Saugatuck, Michigan last week and we wanted to share with you our experience traveling to this fun little Midwest destination for your family travel. Words like epic, most relaxing vacation ever, and best vacation of our life may have flown out of our mouths. Sometimes the sweetest destinations are the simplest and lurking practically in your own backyard.

Saugatuck is a little harbor village that celebrates diversity and offers a fun artsy community for visitors to explore. Recently The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Saugatuck/Douglas as one of the “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” in the U.S. and the writers and editors of Midwest Living Magazine ranked Saugatuck/Douglas fifth among the top 100 vacation destinations in the Midwest. Saugatuck happens to be just an hour and a half from our home, yet it seemed a world away and happened to be our first visit to the town.

Rental properties abound in this town and it is just a matter of selecting your house early enough and finding one in your price point. We searched on HomeAway to find our own dream property. I took on a freelance job and squirreled the money away for our vacation and when we saw this rental in Kingfishers Cove, we knew it would be perfect for us. A gorgeous little log cabin with modern amenities was our heart’s desire and we made it happen.

To save on this expense, you could definitely split the property with another family, book during the week instead of paying for weekend rates, or cut expenses by selecting a smaller size property. Remember that the properties book quickly and you need to plan a couple of months in advance to grab the premium spots in town.

When I asked around on Facebook about the best things to do and see while we were in the area, everyone had their own favorite spots in the town and a bucket list of fun activities to do there. We made a list of everything we wanted to do from the responses (this one from Travelmomiac was among my favorites) and we did everything on our list.  After our week of exploration, here are our family’s top recommendations for fun in the Saugatuck area.

Swoon Over Retro

The antique stores in Saugatuck are phenomenal and full of thoughtfully curated antique items that will have you wishing that you brought a moving truck to take it all home with you. We stopped at so many fun little shops along the main drag, but our favorite was the Blue Star Antique Pavilion. You could literally walk the store for miles and miles and never see the same thing twice. The store is over 50,000 square feet and it was named the best of the best in  Antique Mall in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin by Lake Magazine (July 2005).

You can end your visit with a delicious lunch next door to their building at the Saugatuck Brewing Company.  This award winning micro-brewery has 2 chefs delivering fresh and innovative food that is the perfect way to end a day of antiquing. There are always 12 different beers on tap, and a Hard Cider, that tastes like champagne, and loads of other fun drinks. Emily highly recommends their root beer. She said it was the most amazing thing about the brewery.

Head Downtown

Downtown Saugatuck is full of cute little shops to visit and spend an afternoon browsing in. Many of the shops seemed very tourist geared, but there were some hidden gems along with lots of shops offering wine tastings and food samples to try.

We visited the Saugatuck Drugstore and grabbed ice cream at the soda fountain counter for a midday pick-me-up. The cone pictured above is a SMALL so we recommend ordering a kid size cone so you don’t end up with a belly ache from all the ice cream. There is nothing like sitting at an old-fashioned ice cream counter and the kids loved their delicious treats.

Marro’s Restaurant was on our family’s agenda for our last night of vacation celebration feasting and it did not disappoint. You can order small/lighter portions to save a little money or order the regular size portion (seen in my picture above) and split it between two people. We ordered the Linguine Ala Pescatore and it was a generous portion of mussels, clams, shrimp, and scallops tossed in a spicy red sauce that was absolutely divine.

My daughter ordered the mac and cheese which came out on a platter and looked like chicken nuggets. Deep fried macaroni? Perhaps the world’s most delicious kid food ever.

We ended our downtown visit with a stop at Tuck’s Treats and grabbed a cupcake ($3.99 each) to split for our dessert that evening. It was rich, moist, and decadent. It is a cupcake that you can share among two or three people due to its richness and size.

Catch a Sunset

The sunset was absolutely breathtaking and worth catching in the evening after a great meal together. We caught a sunset over at Pier Cove and it was worth every moment of effort. My daughter actually said this was her favorite part of our trip and, as you can see from the photos, the view was absolutely stunning.

We are adding more sunsets to our family’s travel agendas since this is such a fun and free activity to partake of. The sunset in Saugatuck did not disappoint and the kids loved dipping their toes in the water.

Head to Holland

Holland, Michigan is just thirteen short minutes away from Saugatuck and happened to be one of the highlights of our trip. The shopping in Holland offered fabulous unique and boutique options that could have you window shopping for days. I actually enjoyed the shopping in Holland more than Saugatuck because of the variety of shops they offered and how cute the town was itself.

They offer an amazing Famer’s Market (Open Wednesdays & Saturdays 8am – 4pm May 16 – Nov 24 and Saturdays only thru Dec 15) that had just about everything your heart could desire.

New Holland Brewing Company is a fantastic spot to visit for a great sandwich and pint of their Mad Hatter Beer. The sandwich options were so delicious that my husband and I ordered the two we liked best and split them. The kid’s menu offered generous portions for big appetites.

We ended our feasting and took back slices of Crane’s Pie (located in downtown Holland) for dessert and did a pie taste test. I loved the cherry while my daughter was in love with the red raspberry. It was the perfect way to end a day of fun shopping and eating.

Go On a Dune Buggy Ride

We ended our travels with a Dune Ride together and I have to say that the Saugatuck Dune Ride was one of the highlights of our entire trip. The driver shares the history of the dunes along with a fun comedy routine that keeps families engaged with the historical information. The buggy ride is like a fun roller coaster and you can ride up to 60-65 miles through the hilly dunes.

The ride takes you to the highest dune where you have ten minutes to let your kids run around like crazy down the dunes, where you are able to take pictures of the prettiest scenery I have ever seen in my life, and where the driver will even happily take your family portrait for you.

We ended our trips with sand in our mouth and aching faces from smiling so hard which is the way all vacations should, perhaps, end.

We hope you enjoyed the review of our family’s experience in Saugatuck. Be sure to visit our Travel section for more ideas on great family travel!

4th of July Block Party Tips

Monday, June 25th, 2012

4th of July is near, so this week I have  put together some tips and ideas for planning neighborhood block party.

When I was a child, each year I looked forward to the annual 4th of July block party.

I remember how exciting it was to be out way past my bedtime, eat loads of fun food and play flashlight tag through the neighborhood streets.

In a day and age where we often don’t even know our neighbors, 4th of July activities like block parties are a great way to create or renew friendships and strengthen your neighborhood’s community spirit.

Throwing a block party doesn’t need to be difficult or elaborate, but you will need a plan and ask some neighbors to help.

See below for my five key block party tips.

Invite the Neighborhood

If you have a neighborhood association or committee, you will have the makings of a great guest list.

If not, go door-to-door to request email addresses and names of the family members.

Go green by emailing invites (this will also save you the cost of stamps).

Ask for a small donation to cover the decorations, food and fun.

Publicize your event by putting up posters throughout the neighborhood and talking about it on your neighborhood’s social media pages if they have them.

Apply for a Permit

As soon as you’ve set the date, call your local police or municipal services department to notify them of your block party and see if you need a permit.

It’s best to make this call several weeks before your event.

You’ll also want to ask about roadblocks to keep the area safe.

Ask if your local police can deliver them the day before your block party to make setup easier.

Keep Decorations Festive & Simple

Decorate food tables with red, white and blue banners, hang tissue paper pom-poms on nearby trees, and fill glass vases or mason jars with red tissue paper and flags.

Make this cupcake pick wreath for your door and add some easy flag bunting!

Organize the Food

To keep the food easy and fair, have homes with odd house numbers bring a main dish and have homes with even house numbers bring side dishes or desserts.

Ask each family to bring their own folding tables, chairs, beverages and tableware.

Plan the Fun

Plan a few fun activities for the younger guests. A bike decorating contest is always a hit and fun for all ages.

Plus, you only have to provide the decorating materials.

Another great activity is a neighborhood scavenger hunt, which families could do together.

You could even offer a few prizes to those who complete the hunt.

Summer Dinner Inspiration: Roasted Shrimp Pasta, Cinnamon Whole Wheat Waffles, & Grilled Chicken Tenders

Monday, June 25th, 2012

Looking for summer dinner inspiration? Look no further than these Monday posts for dinners that will inspire your kitchen table. This summer I am taking a few mobile pictures to help inspire your summer meals. I will try to share three great dishes to enjoy each week around the dinner table.

We went on vacation last week so the dishes I am sharing all had to be easy and be able to be prepared with limited pots & pans to create them. The first dish that I created was to kick off our vacation and it is this Roasted Shrimp With Rosemary & Thyme. I served it over a platter of angel hair pasta and we did our favorite lemon roasted green beans for a side dish.

If you haven’t tried this roasted shrimp before, I cannot recommend it enough. These are great served over your favorite pasta, can be served with a great brown rice side, or served alone with your favorite summer veggies. I make this almost every week and it never disappoints!

One of our favorite summertime dishes is these Cracker Barrel Chicken Fingers. I served these with these roasted fingerling potatoes, roasted asparagus, and fresh strawberries from a cute little market in the town.

The tenders were particularly yummy since I created the marinade before we left for our trip and had the chicken marinating for a couple of days before we actually ate them. I also love that the marinade only has three ingredients, making it an easy marinade to pull together!

I have become a huge fan of those disposable containers for marinating foods because they are so easy to transport out to our grill and are easy to stack, especially if you are headed out for a picnic. It may also be because I have had  a few too many leaky bags in my fridge so I find these to be a great option for me!

I love to stick these, marinade and all, in the freezer and prep a few different marinades in one afternoon. Most marinades have similar base ingredients (dressings, olive oil, vinegars, salt, pepper, seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, etc..) and it is so much easier to do this all at once rather than getting them out each time. What a time saver!

I had berries leftover from our meal the night before and decided to dice them with blueberries to top our Cinnamon Wheat Waffles that we devoured for our brunch. I make a double batch of these almost every week and my son loves to eat the leftover frozen waffles for his breakfast each morning. I love that these are packed with whole wheat flour, wheat germ, no sugar, and very little fat in them. It is a great way to start a day and a fun summer brunch.

What is on your summer dinner menus this week?

Homemade Butterbeer Lattes

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

My son and I have been happily reading away at the Harry Potter books for a couple of years now. Although we have been reading the books, we have yet to dive into the movies and a recent dreary day seemed the perfect movie day excuse. To really round out the movie though, we wanted to try the infamous Butterbeer that Harry and his friends seem to enjoy so much in the books.

I had the kids help me in the kitchen to create these together. They loved helping with the scooping, measuring, and stirring. It only took a few minutes to create this easy and delicious afternoon treat.

The Butterbeer Lattes were absolutely out of this world and the kids said that they think they love this as much as our favorite homemade cocoa and chai tea recipe. These tasted a lot like butterscotch and a little bit like a cookie.

Want to create your own Butterbeer Latte. Snag the recipe over here!

Gain some summer inspiration on our Pinterest 100 days of summer (’12) edition where you can get another amazing round-up of 100 ideas to inspire your summer bucket list.

Summer Dinner Inspiration

Monday, June 18th, 2012

I love planning summer meals because they are so easy to execute. I am hoping to provide a few ideas for summer dinner inspiration from recipes we have available on our site. I believe though that if you have a grill and you have a slow cooker, you have all the tools you need in the world to get a great dinner on the table without a lot of effort in the summertime.

This summer I am taking a few mobile pictures to help inspire your summer meals. I will try to share three great dishes to enjoy each week around the dinner table.

I love a good Sunday dinner and one of our family’s favorite dishes is roast chicken. There are a million ways to roast a chicken, but absolute favorite is this Roast Chicken Cooked in Milk. Once I found this recipe, I have never cooked my chicken any other way. It is a fun flavor combination of sage, cinnamon, lemon, and milk. The sauce is heavenly. I served this with crusty bread with dipping sauce (pesto with a generous drizzle of olive oil) and roasted fingerling potatoes.

The potatoes were cooked at 375 for 45 minutes. They were tossed with olive oil, rosemary, thyme, and kosher salt. These were golden and crunchy. We dipped those in our pesto dipping sauce too.

There is pasta and there is summertime pasta. My Rotini with Turkey Meatballs is one of those deliciously light dishes that you just can’t stop eating. If you have cherry tomatoes and herbs in your garden, you have the makings for a really great sauce for this dish. We served it with the leftover bread from our meal and my favorite roasted green beans. To drink, I have become addicted to Tazo Passion Fruit Tea. I mixed this with some lemonade and it was so delicious and refreshing.

Breakfast for dinner is always a hit around our house. Thanks to using the Cooks Illustrated guide to freezing my blueberries last summer, I still enjoying the last of our fabulous blueberries for our dishes.

Nothing screams summer to me more than a pile of these blueberry pancakes. If you have some blueberries on hand in your house, I highly recommend visiting my list of eight great recipes to try with your blueberries this year.
