The Good Life for Less Book Update

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

There are no words to explain seeing and holding your book for the first time. Last week a box arrived on my doorstep from Penguin and, with shaky hands, I opened the book and drank it all in. The only thing that even comes close to this experience is the birth of my children.

Last week I received an email that nearly brought me to my knees. My editor emailed to let me know that we had already sold the first print run of the book and they had to reprint it.  I can’t even begin to wrap my head around that, can you?

The big question I am always asked is how you even begin the process of writing a book. My experience getting published was a unique one because it came through a truly unique opportunity for our family. Several years ago, I had replied to a media inquiry for a magazine that was looking for families that choose to live a life without credit cards. I submitted our family as an example and shared that we also had celebrated paying off our credit cards with our kids by throwing a debt-free party with them. They loved this unique spin on debt-free living and sent a team out to my house to photograph me for Redbook and wrote a feature on us. It was, perhaps, the most glamorous day of my life and I couldn’t believe all of these people were in our little house in Granger.

That magazine somehow landed in the hands of a literary agent who reached out to me and asked if I had ever considered writing a book.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Of course, the process of going from a blog and freelance article writer to a book writer was a difficult one. The entire process took me three years, mainly due to my own obstacles with running my site and running after small children.  When we finally sold the book, I had only gone over the first hurdle. You see, with nonfiction books, you sell your proposal before you sell a book.  Writing the proposal is writing the blueprint for what you envision the book will look like. It sets up the skeleton of how it will all look, but it is not the book.

Once that was sold, I still had a book to write.

I remember talking to another author about how I had never realized what a process this all would be and he shared with me that it isn’t really about how talented of a writer you are, it is just if you have the endurance to get through the process of publishing a book. I now understand.

When I finally received a copy of my book in my hands after all that writing, it was a big girl’s little girl dream come true. I don’t know if I ever will get over how incredibly incredible it all is.  You see, even as a child, I wanted to be a writer and to write my very own book.

I remember sitting and listening to my teachers read to me and rolling around words and phrases in my head and mouth because I loved them so much. I wished that I could have that power with words that my words would someday get stuck in their heads the way they did in mine.

One of my favorite authors was Beverly Cleary and now that I am rereading her books with my daughter, it brings even more joy to me as I roll the words around in my mouth again and her stories bring new meaning to me as an adult.

When I was a kid,  I used to type furiously on an old typewriter in my parent’s basement, writing my own little books of stories of my own imagination. My mother can also attest to the elaborate storytelling (that’s how I like to think of it) and my power at embellishing every story I told. I wanted more than anything to be a writer.

When my husband suggested I start a blog for my ideas, it turned out to be a fantastic outlet for me when I first became a stay-at-home mom and has fed that creative part of my brain so well over the years. I could be a “published author,” simply by hitting a button to post my words. Granted, it was publishing that anyone can do, but I have always treated it like my life’s work to write words and have people read them. More empowering is when someone reads your words and then they share with you how you have changed their lives through them.

If you have followed me over the years, you have seen the evolution of the blog, the words, and the found love for creating beautiful images with those words. If there is one thing I have learned it is that there is always the potential to do and be better. I am still evolving.

I hope you will be able to pick up my book and read more about our family’s journey out of debt and unemployment and into a life far richer than we could have ever imagined…in all the important ways.

The book will be out on bookstore shelves on January 2nd (a slight shift in dates due to our reprinting), but is now available for pre-order.  Here are some options for great places to order it! I also encourage you to hit your local bookstore to pick it up!

Amazon

Barnes & Noble

Walmart

Powell’s

Indiebound

My first book signing will be on January 19th from 2-4 PM at the Mishawaka Barnes & Noble Store in the University Park Mall.  Feel free to accept my invitation to join me on that day. I will admit, I am SUPER nervous about that. I can just picture me and my mom sitting at a table alone.

To crickets.

You don’t want that do you? I would be so honored to meet you all and please forgive me ahead of time about  knowing everyone’s name. I know Facebook faces, Twitter profile handles, and can recognize you on IG… BUT I tend to have an old lady brain and can’t always remember actual names! That is the other part I am nervous about so I thought I would say that in advance!

Thank you all for your continued love and support for me through this project.  I find myself randomly bursting into tears when I think of how kind everyone has been to us through this process and the genuine excitement from our friends about all of it.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

“Use What You Have” DIY Advent Calendar

Monday, November 26th, 2012

It is that time of year again and that means another Advent season.  You don’t have to have a fancy advent calendar to celebrate the advent season, in fact, I have a DIY Advent Calendar made from items you already have in your home. This free DIY Advent Calendar is the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season without breaking the bank.

Today I wanted to share with you a “use what you have” Advent calendar that we created last year. It was such a hit that I plan to make another one for this year! This requires no pricey materials and is based around what the holiday season should be all about… being together!

In the years past, we have always had a Christmas Jar of activities. Each day we would randomly draw from a set number of activities and enjoy a holiday activity together as a family. This year, our life with our two children has become increasingly busy and scheduled. We have two school schedules, extracurricular activities, homework, holiday programs, holiday family events, and so much more going on. Our life of leisure seems to have taken a detour and I have had to be more thoughtful in our approach towards carving time out for what we would hope to accomplish this year.

I wanted to create our own countdown to Christmas in a creative way, but I didn’t want to spend any money on it. I decided to use what I had to create our homemade Advent filled with fun activities and wanted to share with you what we created!

Homemade Advent Calendar

Supplies needed:

A large circle punch (in scrapbook supplies at craft store) or a jar or glass for tracing
Tape
Scrapbook or festive holiday gift wrap
Ribbon
Marker
2 Muffin Tins
A picture frame stand or a place to prop your finished tins

I began this project by punching out 48 circles. On half of these write the numbers 1-24 and on the other half you can write fun activities to do with your children in anticipation of the big day.

Stick your holiday activity folded up inside of each muffin tin and then attach the numbered circles to each individual muffin tin. Secure with tape on both sides to hold your activities in securely.

Break out your trusty calendar and jot down the activities for each day to remind yourself what you need to plan for and what supplies will need to be purchased to accomplish the activities.

Add a little festive ribbon to the top of your muffin tin. Display the muffin tin by using a picture frame stand or finding a sturdy wall to prop it up with. Have your child draw an activity each morning to complete as a family.

Here are 24 Ideas for Advent Activities

1. Decorate the Christmas tree.
2. Big bubble baths with holiday music playing.
3. Go to the library to pick out holiday books.
4. Special popcorn and hot cocoa snack with a holiday movie.
5. Head to a holiday concert.
6. Decorate gingerbread houses.
7. Make Christmas cards for your special friends.
8. Watch a holiday movie.
9. Color a holiday coloring page.
10. Bake Christmas cookies.
11. Go see holiday lights.
12. Go see Santa in your local downtown.
13. Write a letter to Santa.
14. Pop popcorn & play a board game together.
15. Host an ornament decorating party.
16. Make gingerbread waffles or gingerbread donuts for breakfast.
17. Wrap holiday gifts while listening to holiday music together.
18. Go to the dollar theater and see a movie.
19. Go see the Christmas lights in your pajamas.
20. Deliver holiday treats to your friends & the firefighters in town.
21. Watch your favorite holiday movie.
22. Open one gift early.
23. Go caroling.
24. Do a holiday puzzle together

Total cost for this project was zero and very little money will be spent to do these activities together. The memories I hope to create with my children though, I hope those will be priceless!

Do you do an Advent calendar or have a special way your family celebrates the countdown to Christmas? I would love to hear your ideas!

Dressing Up Store-Bought Pies: Cranberry Crunch Pie Topping

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Pumpkin pie rarely needs an adornment more than a little whipped cream on top…that is, until I decided a crunchy cranberry pie topper would be a fun way to ad a little sparkle to a piece of pie. This cranberry crunch topper is the perfect way to add a little sweetness of crushed cookies, adds that tart bite from the cranberries to the top of your pies, and rounds out the crunchy flavor with freshly toasted walnuts.

A quick whirl through your food processor is all these ingredients need to pull together for a quick homemade topper for those store-bought pies. Set out a few of these fun toppings with your favorite store-bought pie or homemade pumpkin pies this year.

Happy Thanksgiving, Friends! I will be offline preparing to host my own family for the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday with your own families!

How to Entertain the Kids on Thanksgiving Day

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

It has been so much fun preparing for the holidays with all of you. Today I am concluding our post series with Pure Charity with some fun ideas for keeping your kids entertained on Thanksgiving morning while you are busy preparing all of that Thanksgiving food…or just preparing for all of that fun with those relatives.

If you haven’t been following along the past three weeks, I have been sharing about a great site called Pure Charity and how your holiday shopping can make an impact on the organizations you are most passionate about. Did I mention signing up for this account is free and easy! I really encourage you to join in!

What is Pure Charity?

Pure Charity is a simple, but awesome concept for giving back to those causes you care most about. Basically, you install a simple toolbar into your web browser and then it alerts you with a small banner at the top when a store you are shopping with has a partnership with Pure Charity. Click on that little button and you are making a percentage deposit into your Giving Fund. Your Giving Fund can then be applied to the charities that are important to you and that you have a desire to support.

The first week we discussed some elegant and simple ways to create the perfect Thanksgiving table. I love that these ideas incorporated elements of nature, along with thoughtfully purchased items to mix into your everyday items, and a thankful chalkboard where the kids can jot down what they are most thankful for in their lives.
Next we created the Perfect Pumpkin Pie for our Thanksgiving dessert. I found beautiful tools to create a detailed crust and serve ware that made the pie look like a little piece of art through the Pure Charity partner sites.
Thanksgiving happens to be one of my favorite holidays and I love to make these holidays special and memorable for my kids. Pure Charity asked me to show everyone what could be done via their partners and gave me a small budget to pick out some items that I would recommend for keeping the whole family entertained on Thanksgiving Day.

Play Classic Board Games- If there is one thing our family loves, it is board games. You will often find our family spending our evenings playing board games together. Thanksgiving is a great time to break out the board games for the young and old alike. Group games like Apples to Apples, Jenga, or an adult round of Taboo can be a great way to keep your family laughing and spending time together. Hungry Hungry Hippos is always a great game to play with the kids and can be a fun way to keep the cousins entertained while the food is being prepared.  (Purchased through Target)

Watch A Classic Thanksgiving Movie– Our family’s favorite Thanksgiving movie is, “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.” Of course, any movie with Charlie Brown and the gang in it is always a guaranteed winner in our family.  (Purchase through Best Buy)

Bring Out Their Inner Artist-
If there is one thing my kids go through quickly it is art supplies. Items like colored pencils, construction paper, coloring and doodle books that inspire creativity in my children, and pre-made art kits can all be fun ways to get those creative juices flowing. I was able to find some amazing coloring books like, “The Fashion Coloring Book,” and “The Coloring Book,” that provide great prompts for your child’s imagination. Even better, I was able to find two Kid Made Modern Comic Book Kits so that each of my kids can create their very own comic books.  (All Purchased Through Target)

Just Dance It Out- A well-known fact about our family is that the Clark family is basically its own dance crew. If there is one thing we love to do it is to dance our troubles away. Just Dance 4 and Just Dance Disney games are two fun ways to get your kids moving after that big Thanksgiving feast and work off that sluggish, “I ate too much turkey,” feeling in a fun way.
If your family is anything like ours though,  you might not let those kids even get a chance to play any of their own games. You will simply be too busy dance battling each other to give anyone else the opportunity to do anything else (*ahem*).  (Purchased through Best Buy).

Play a Round of Thanksgiving Bingo- One thing that I love to do for my kids is to print out a simple Thanksgiving Bingo game to keep them entertained while I am preparing the food. This is a fun and free way to keep them entertained and there are six Bingo cards to print and choose from. Pop a bag of popcorn and let them use the popcorn as their markers to mark their Bingo squares. Once they get tired of that game, print out another round of cards and have them do Thanksgiving Football Bingo instead. (Printable available for free through Spoonful).

After these purchases to entertain the kids on Thanksgiving Day, I was able to  bank $5.63 in my Giving Fund for my favorite charities through Pure Charity

I am working with Pure Charity, and Pure Charity has provided me with compensation for these posts. My participation is voluntary and opinions are always my own.

Dressing Up Store-Bought Pies: Spiced Whipped Cream Recipe

Monday, November 19th, 2012

I remember when I thought that making whipped cream was a labor-intensive process. Ah, I have had so much to learn in the kitchen. Whipped cream is simply one of these easiest pie toppings to make and spicing up your whipped cream is an easy way to add a personal touch to a store-bought pie.

This spiced whipped cream recipe will bring an extra layer of spice to your pies that your guests will absolutely love. The best part is that this easy spiced whipped cream topping can be created in under 5 minutes and with a couple of items you probably already have lurking in your pantry.

In a perfect world we would all be making handmade pumpkin pies made with homemade crusts. I thoroughly love baking, but I also know that it isn’t for everyone. For those of my friends who prefer to put their love in other elements of the holiday, I am going to show some easy ways to spice up those store-bought pies that will take those pies to another level.

Before I became acquainted with the kitchen, I really thought whipped cream was just Cool Whip and homemade whipped cream was a powder that you added water to that made whipped cream.

I really did.

Yes.

I.

Did.

Of course, I know a few more things than I did 10 years ago, but it still makes me giggle to know how detached I was from the culinary world. Whipped cream is actually just heavy whipping cream, whipped until it forms peaks and you can add your own spin on sweeteners, spices, and extracts to create your own unique combination of sweet and spicy. It’s perhaps the simplest and most satisfying of pie toppings.

This Spiced Whipped Cream gets its hint of spices from ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and a little sugar. It is the perfect accompaniment to your pumpkin or pecan pies for the holidays.

Tomorrow I will share with you one other fun topping to try on your pies along with some fun ideas for entertaining the kids!

Creatively Wrapping Gifts With Goodwill Items

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Christmas is quickly approaching and this is the holiday where the crafter in me rejoices not only for the Christmas crafts I get the opportunity to create, but the opportunity to package those gifts beautifully under our tree.

A thrift store can be a great place to check for, not only your gifts, but also items to creatively package those gifts in a unique way.

Yarn Embellishments

It is rare to stop at a thrift store and not see craft supplies that have been donated.

Yarn is one of those inexpensive craft supplies that I love to use when packaging my gifts.

Whether it is a yarn pom pom in lieu of a bow, multiple colors of yarn that have been woven together to create a unique packaging detail, or even knitted or crocheted embellishments can make beautiful gift toppers. (Image Source:Persia Lou)

Gift Card Snow Globes

Gift cards can often feel impersonal, but are often just what the recipient has asked for or needs.

Package those gift cards creatively by hunting for jars that can be used to create your very own gift card snow globes.

Little ones can participate in the fun in creating these adorable craft.

Look for small items to decorate the inside of your snow globe and spray paint those thrift store lids with a festive green or red spray paint to spruce it up. (Source: Hip2Save)

Fabric Flowers

Visit your local thrift on the half-off days or select items that are on sale that week to find material from clothing items that can be used to creatively embellish your gifts.

Cut scraps of fabric to create homespun bows or cut the fabric into easy circles and create a fabric flower that can be personalized with unique buttons or costume jewelry for creatively topping them.

Even items like t-shirts can be used to make elegant flowers for a unique addition to boxes or kraft paper gift bags. (Source: MomAdvice)

Book Page Rosettes

Book pages are the ultimate in frugal craft materials and are a fantastic resource for creating your very own gift toppers.

With a simple pair of scissors and a little glue, you can top your gifts beautifully and inexpensively with rosettes made from book pages. (Source: Under the Table & Dreaming)

Beauty Gift Additions

Gifts of beauty items like sugar scrubs or bath salts can be a fun and thoughtful gift to give and made with materials in your pantry.

I love to add a simple addition of a vintage spoon and package these items in a mason jar.

Find a jar you love, but can’t find a lid?

Simple bands and jar lids can be found at your local discount store and freshen up a jar with a tired lid or be the perfect topper for a jar that might be missing one. (Source: MomAdvice)

Salt & Cinnamon Dough Toppers

Remember making simple salt dough ornaments or cinnamon-filled dough ornaments for the holidays?

These are still a fun way to top gifts and can be made from some simple ingredients in your pantry.

Grab a salt dough recipe here or look for the cinnamon dough recipe over here. Tie these on with scraps of fabric.

The best part about these toppers is that they later can be used as an ornament to adorn your tree. (Source: The Cheese Thief)

What are some creative ways you love to package your gifts? I would love to hear from you!

Homemade Pumpkin Pie

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

If there is one thing that simply screams Thanksgiving to me, it is the humble pumpkin pie. Today I wanted to share with you my recipe for the best homemade pumpkin pie that can round out your Thanksgiving feasting for the holidays. Not only will I be sharing my recipe for this pie, but I also wanted to share with you some fun tools to add to your baking arsenal.

The first pie I ever made was a Pumpkin Pie. With the ease of canned pumpkin and a few other simple ingredients in my pantry and fridge, it was one of the easiest pies to create and gave me confidence in the kitchen. The crust may have been store-bought and the filling was simple and straightforward, but I truly felt like a rock star in my very own kitchen.

Everyone has their own unique spin on this simple recipe, and today I wanted to share with you a filling that is rich on flavor that is unlike any pumpkin pie I have ever eaten. The richness comes from the well-blended cooked filling, the dark brown sugar, and the delicious combination of spices.

Good tools for pie making certainly make the job more fun and just as I shared with you the fun Thanksgiving centerpiece and table I was able to create through my partnership with Pure Charity, today I am making a beautiful dessert for the holidays using tools purchased through the Pure Charity.

If you have been a longtime reader to our site, you know how important giving back to other is to me. Whether it is the giving done in small ways like “found items,” around our home, to the giving of your talents to those in need, to the bigger projects where you gather your community and really feel like you make a difference.

Shopping through Pure Charity is one of those smaller things you can do that is as effortless as those donations of found items around your home. Holiday shopping will be happening for us over the next couple of months, why not make it shopping AND giving to those who need your support in the process? That sounds like  a win-win!

Pure Charity asked me to show everyone what could be done via their partners and gave me a small budget to get started. Last week I shared ideas for setting the perfect Thanksgiving table, today I am sharing my delicious Pumpkin Pie recipe, and next week I will showcase some fun ideas for keeping the kids entertained. All supplies were ordered through their partner sites and I have created a Giving Fund for the charities that are most important to our family.
I can honestly say that I have never made a pie from scratch so this was not only a challenge for me, but reminded me that I still have so much to learn in the kitchen. This week I have several fun recipes as we enter the holiday entertaining season and I can’t wait to share them with you!

I found gorgeous pie cutters, brushes, pastry wheels, cookie sheets, and an elegant pie server from Williams Sonoma. My pie dishes are already receiving rave reviews and were just a mere $13 from the Paula Deen collection from Walmart.

What is dessert without a little wine? I have a desire to look fancy, but don’t always have the fund to really pay for the fancy in my life. One trick that I love to do when entertaining is to disguise boxed wine or less expensive bottles of wine in an elegant wine carafe. These stemless wine glasses (both red and white) plus my wine carafe makes entertaining look elegant while not spending a lot of money. I found these over at Walmart through Pure Charity.

Did you know you can even order a turkey or ham for your holiday entertaining through their partnership with Omaha Steaks? If that doesn’t scream stress-free entertaining than I don’t know what does? I may have ordered one for myself this year..Hey, it’s for charity!

With all of the items I bought to prepare my beautiful pie and serve my wine elegantly, the true bonus was that I was able to put an additional $7.69 towards my Giving Fund!

Head on over and create your own account with Pure Charity and find a cause that is important to you to give back to when doing your holiday shopping this year!

Today I am sharing my new favorite Pumpkin Pie recipe with you! Once you try this pumpkin pie, you will quickly discover why it is my new favorite pie recipe. Be sure to visit this week’s All Butter Pie Crust tutorial that can be prepared in your handy food processor! Happy baking, everyone!

Homemade Pumpkin Pie
Recipe Type: Dessert
Author: America’s Test Kitchen Baking Cookbook
Prep time: 15 mins
Cook time: 25 mins
Total time: 40 mins
Serves: 8
Processing the canned pumpkin yields a smooth and creamy pie texture and cooking the canned pumpkin in the spices & sugar helps take away from the canned pumpkin taste without hassling with fresh pumpkin.
Ingredients
  • 1 recipe for a single-crust pie dough (Be sure to check the link for the All Butter Pie Crust)
  • 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup (7 ounces) dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 4 large eggs
Instructions
  1. Follow the steps given for the All Butter Pie Crust. Line your chilled crust with a double layer of foil and fill with pie weights (or dried beans). Bake until the pie dough looks dry and is light in color 25-30 minutes.
  2. Increase the oven temperature to 400 degrees.
  3. For filling (while the crust is baking since you want the crust to still be warm when you add the filling), process the pumpkin puree, brown sugar, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and cloves together in a food processor until combined, about 1 minute.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and simmer over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until thick and shiny, about 5 minutes.
  5. Whisk in the cream and milk, return to a simmer briefly, then remove from the heat.
  6. Process the eggs in a food processor until uniform, about five seconds. With the machine running, add about half the hot pumpkin mixture in the feed tube. Stop the machine, add the remaining pumpkin and continue processing until smooth (about 30 seconds)
  7. Immediately pour the warm filling in the warm crust. Bake the pie until the filling is puffed and lightly cracked around the edges and the center jiggles slightly when shaken, about 25 minutes.
  8. Let the pie cool on a wire rack until the filling has set, about two hours. Serve warm or a at room temperature.
  9. To make Pumpkin Pie Ahead- Make your pie dough ahead of time. Once baked and cooled, the pie can be covered loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerated for up to one day. Let the pie come to room temperature before serving or, to serve warm, reheat the pie in a 300 degree oven for about 15 minutes.
