Lidija Hilje- Slanting Towards the Sea (Podcast Interview)

Wednesday, July 9th, 2025

Lidija Hilje shares how her debut novel, Slanting Towards the Sea, and her own journey is shaped by second chances and the courage it required to begin again.

Lidija Hilje brings a rare and powerful perspective to her fiction. After a decade working in Croatian courts, she left the legal field to write in English as her second language and to coach other writers through their own stories. We discuss how that radical life change shaped both her novel and her coaching philosophy.

In today’s Book Gang episode, Lidija joins me for a profoundly moving and insightful conversation about her first novel, Slanting Towards the Sea. In this week’s warm and expansive episode, we discuss:

  • How writing in a second language and through a bicultural lens shaped the emotional and narrative depth of Slanting Towards the Sea
  • The novel’s quiet but powerful thread on broken governmental systems, and how we see the differences and parallels between our American and Croatian experiences
  • How Lidija’s former legal career informs her current work as a book coach, and how she helps authors clarify and complete the stories they feel called to tell

BONUS BOOK LIST: This week, you can set sail with these 34 sea books. From shipwreck survival stories to coastal mysteries, oceanic fantasies, and sweeping seaside romances- this book list has a little something for everyone!

Slanting Towards the Sea by Lidija Hilje

Slanting Towards the Sea Book Summary

Spanning twenty years and one life-altering summer in Croatia, Slanting Towards the Sea is at once an unforgettable love story and a powerful exploration of what it means to come of age in a country younger than oneself.

Ivona divorced the love of her life, Vlaho, a decade ago. They met as students at the turn of the millennium, when newly democratic Croatia was alive with hope and promise. But the challenges of living in a burgeoning country extinguished Ivona’s dreams one after another—and a devastating secret forced her to set him free.

Now Vlaho is remarried and a proud father of two, while Ivona’s life has taken a downward turn. In her thirties, she has returned to her childhood home to care for her ailing father. Bewildered by life’s disappointments, she finds solace in reconnecting with Vlaho and is welcomed into his family by his spirited wife, Marina. But when a new man enters Ivona’s life, the carefully cultivated dynamic between the three is disrupted, forcing a reckoning for all involved.

Set against the mesmerizing Croatian coastline, Slanting Towards the Sea is a cinematic, emotionally searing debut about the fragile nature of potential and the transcendence of love.

Zoe Wallbrook- History Lessons (Podcast Interview)

Zoe Wallbrook shares how her debut mystery, History Lessons, blends academia, amateur sleuthing, and suspense in this clever, twisty campus mystery with heart.

In today’s special July 4th Book Gang episode, author Zoe Wallbrook joins me for a smart and surprising conversation about her dazzling debut, History Lessons. This savvy mystery novel brings the classroom to the crime scene.

When a brilliant but insufferable colleague is murdered, Professor Daphne Ouverture’s quiet academic life gives way to a dangerous investigation filled with buried secrets, institutional reckonings, and revolutionary echoes.

In the spirit of this mystery’s assignment, this July 4th, we’re turning the spotlight on liberty—not just American, but French too! In this week’s savvy conversation, Zoe and I discuss:

  • How Daphne’s specialty—Black families in 18th-century France—reframes historical narratives and why fiction can be a powerful tool for expanding the lens of academic research.
  • What it takes to write a compelling mystery with real-world research at its core—and how Zoe’s Pitch Wars experience and academic life shaped the story.
  • Surprising intersections between the American and French Revolutions—and what Daphne might rant about if she were giving a July 4th lecture on liberty and institutional power.
Amateur Sleuths Books

BONUS BOOK LIST: This week, I’m sharing 41 Unlikely Amateur Sleuths Are On the Case, featuring amateur sleuths who take matters into their own hands- from cozy, small-town investigations to gripping whodunits!

History Lessons by Zoe Wallbrook

History Lessons Book Summary

A college history professor must solve her superstar colleague’s murder before she becomes the next target in this funny, romantic debut mystery, perfect for readers of Janet Evanovich, Kellye Garrett, and Ali Hazelwood.

As a newly minted junior professor, Daphne Ouverture spends her days giving lectures on French colonialism, working on her next academic book, and going on atrocious dates. Her small world suits her just fine. Until Sam Taylor dies.

The rising star of Harrison University’s anthropology department was never one of Daphne’s favorites, despite his popularity. But that doesn’t prevent Sam’s killer from believing Daphne has something that belonged to Sam—something the killer will stop at nothing to get.

Between grading papers and navigating her disastrous love life, Daphne embarks on her own investigation to find out what connects her to Sam’s murder. With the help of an alluring former-detective-turned-bookseller, she unravels a deadly cover-up on campus.

This well-crafted, voice-driven mystery introduces an unforgettable crime fiction heroine.

Austin Taylor- Notes on Chemistry (Podcast Interview)

Thursday, June 26th, 2025

Not knowing the publishing rules helped Austin Taylor sell her debut, Notes on Infinity. From lab notes to spreadsheets, learn her data-driven approach.

In today’s Book Gang episode, debut author Austin Taylor joins me to discuss her dazzling new novel Notes on Infinity. This high-concept campus novel follows Zoe and Jack, two brilliant students whose late-night collaboration leads to the development of an anti-aging drug, a billion-dollar startup, and a powerful reckoning.

Austin brings a unique blend of rigor and vulnerability to her work, drawing from her dual background in chemistry and English, as well as personal experiences with chronic illness that reshaped her academic trajectory. Notes on Infinity may ask how far we’ll go to chase our dreams, but this conversation dives into how far Austin went to write them.

In this insightful conversation, Austin and I discuss:

  • How not knowing “the rules” of publishing gave her the freedom to query an ambitious debut.
  • The thoughtful strategies she used to distill complex scientific ideas without losing her novel’s credibility—or alienating readers.
  • The importance of chronic illness representation and how her own health challenges added urgency and emotional authenticity to the story.
Best Campus Novels

BONUS BOOK LIST:

This week, I’m sharing a companion list of 32 Unforgettable Campus Novels With All the Drama—from ivy-draped secrets to heady student-faculty dynamics to the unsettling thrill of starting over. If Notes on Infinity sparked something for you, these book titles will keep the conversation going.

Notes on Infinity Book Summary

A singular, extraordinary debut about Zoe and Jack, Harvard students who find themselves propelled into the intoxicating biotech startup world when they announce they’ve discovered the cure for aging. A different kind of love story where the thirst for achievement consumes and the stakes are forever.

Zoe, the daughter of an MIT professor who grew up in her brother’s shadow, can envision her future anew at Harvard. Jack, a boy in Zoe’s organic chemistry class with unruly hair and a gleam of competitiveness, matches her intellect and curiosity with every breath. When Jack refers Zoe for a position in a prestigious professor’s lab, the two become entwined as colleagues, staying up late to discuss scientific ideas. They find themselves on the cusp of a breakthrough: the promise of immortality through a novel antiaging drug.

Zoe and Jack set off on their new project in secret. Finding encouraging results, they bring their work to an investor, drop out of Harvard, and form a startup. But after the money, the magazine covers, and the national news stories detailing their success, Zoe and Jack receive a startling accusation that threatens to destroy both the company they built and their partnership.

A captivating novel about young love, the allure of immortality, and the recklessness that can come with early success, Notes on Infinity asks: How far would you go to achieve your dreams?

Meet Austin Taylor

Austin Taylor graduated from Harvard University in 2021 with a joint degree in chemistry and English. Notes on Infinity is inspired in part by her academic work and the pressure-cooker atmosphere of elite science programs. She has worked in science policy and public speaking coaching and is a private pilot, registered Maine guide, and bassist. She lives and writes in her home state of Maine.

Dolen Perkins-Valdez- Happy Land (Podcast Interview)

Dolen Perkins-Valdez shares the riveting history behind her new book, Happy Land, the research surprises she uncovered, and how urgency drives her storytelling.

In today’s Book Gang episode, New York Times bestselling author Dolen Perkins-Valdez joins me to discuss Happy Land, a transporting novel inspired by the true story of a lost kingdom built by freed people in the hills of North Carolina. This dual-timeline story explores land, lineage, and the courage it takes to reclaim what is yours.

Happy Land by Dolen Perkins-Valdez

Happy Land Book Summary

Nikki hasn’t seen her grandmother in years. So when the elder calls out of the blue with an urgent request for Nikki to visit her in the hills of western North Carolina, Nikki hesitates only for a moment. After years of silence in her family, due to a mysterious estrangement between her mother and grandmother, she’s determined to learn the truth while she still can.

But instead of answers about the recent past, Mother Rita tells Nikki an incredible story of a kingdom on this very mountain, and of her great-great-great grandmother, Luella, who would become its queen.

It sounds like the makings of a fairy tale—royalty among a community of freed people. But the more Nikki learns about the Kingdom of the Happy Land, and the lives of those who dwelled in the ruins she discovers in the woods, the more she realizes how much of her identity and her family’s secrets are wrapped up in these hills. Because this land is their legacy, and it will be up to her to protect it before it, like so much else, is stolen away.

Inspired by true events, Happy Land is a transporting multi-generational novel about the stories that shape us and the dazzling courage it takes to dream.

Allegra Goodman- Isola (Podcast Interview)

Allegra Goodman- Isola (Podcast Interview)

Allegra Goodman tells the surprising origin story of Isola—from a children’s book discovery to immersive museum research—all written in complete secrecy.

In today’s Book Gang episode, celebrated author Allegra Goodman joins me to discuss her stunning survival novel Isola, the incredible true story that inspired it, and the highly unusual creative process behind her most critically acclaimed book yet.

Allegra kept Isola a secret—entirely—from her agent, her family, and even close friends while she wrote it. She reveals why this story demanded privacy and how keeping it under wraps gave her a rare creative clarity. She also shares what it meant to research this historical setting in museums and archives and how a serendipitous find in a children’s book 22 years ago sparked the idea that would grow into Isola.

In this inspiring conversation, Allegra and I discuss:

  • Why she kept Isola a secret from everyone—even her agent and family—throughout the writing process. We explore what drove this decision, how it freed her creatively, and what it felt like to reveal the project once it was complete.
  • The immersive research behind the novel, including museum visits and the spark of inspiration that came from a children’s book during a late-night feeding session. Allegra traces the story’s origin back 22 years, when she stumbled on a brief mention of a marooned noblewoman that she couldn’t shake.
  • What it’s really like to be selected for both Reese’s Book Club and Read With Jenna. Allegra is the first guest to share a behind-the-scenes look at these high-profile honors—how they differ, what surprised her, and how they’ve shaped her connection with readers.

Milo Todd- The Lilac People (Podcast Interview)

Thursday, June 5th, 2025

Milo Todd discusses the research process for his debut, The Lilac People. This sweeping historical fiction novel shares a devastating chapter in trans history.

Debut novelist Milo Todd joins me to discuss his book, The Lilac People, in honor of Pride Month. This sweeping and heartbreaking historical fiction novel uncovers a devastating chapter in queer and trans history.

Milo’s novel centers on a group of trans and intersex patients at Berlin’s Institute for Sexual Science as Hitler’s regime begins its rise to power. Through stunning research and unforgettable characters, readers uncover a nearly erased history to life—while drawing chilling parallels to today’s political climate.

In our conversation, Milo shares how real historical figures and overlooked archives shaped the characters in his novel—and why it was crucial to honor the lives of those whose stories were almost erased from history.

In this moving conversation, Milo and I discuss:

  • How Milo discovered the history of the Institute for Sexual Science and the work of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld—and the biggest surprises when researching their legacy.
  • The challenges with research for this novel in the face of the pandemic and the creative avenues he took to build his story
  • How Milo sees trans people as being the canaries in the coal mine as we discuss one of his story’s most impactful scenes
  • How Milo’s teaching work with trans youth informs his writing and what actions he believes are most impactful in allyship today.

BONUS BOOK LIST: This week, I’m sharing a companion book list of 26 LGBTQ History Books to read, including new releases and backlist titles, that offer illuminating details on the joys and triumphs throughout queer history.

The Lilac People Book Summary

A moving and deeply humane story about a trans man who must relinquish the freedoms of prewar Berlin to survive first the Nazis then the Allies, all while protecting the ones he loves

In 1932 Berlin, a trans man named Bertie and his friends spend carefree nights at the Eldorado Club, the epicenter of Berlin’s thriving queer community. An employee of the renowned Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld at the Institute of Sexual Science, Bertie works to improve queer rights in Germany and beyond. But everything changes when Hitler rises to power. The Institute is raided, the Eldorado is shuttered, and queer people are rounded up. Bertie barely escapes with his girlfriend, Sofie, to a nearby farm. There they take on the identities of an elderly couple and live for more than a decade in isolation.

In the final days of the war, with their freedom in sight, Bertie and Sofie find a young trans man collapsed on their property, still dressed in Holocaust prison clothes. They vow to protect him—not from the Nazis, but from the Allied forces who are arresting queer prisoners while liberating the rest of the country. Ironically, as the Allies’ vise grip closes on Bertie and his family, their only salvation is to flee to the United States.

Brimming with hope, resilience, and the enduring power of community, The Lilac People tells an extraordinary story inspired by real events and recovers an unknown moment of World War II and trans history.

Annie Hartnett- The Road to Tender Hearts- Podcast Interview

Thursday, May 29th, 2025

Annie Hartnett discusses the inspiration behind her quirky road trip novel The Road to Tender Hearts and why she breaks all the rules in writing her stories.

Annie Hartnett joins me to discuss her latest bestselling novel, The Road to Tender Hearts, and the inspiration behind this road trip story. We explore the heartfelt and humorous moments that showcase a wonderfully quirky found family, which even includes a psychic cat.

She also shares the surprising real-life inspirations for her unforgettable characters and explains how literary mischief is woven into their worlds.

In this quirky conversation, Annie and I discuss:

  • Why Annie made a death-predicting cat named Pancakes the emotional engine of the novel—and how a real-life nursing home cat named Oscar inspired this unforgettable character.
  • How playing with point of view and narrator’s voice keeps her writing fresh, and why she’s unconcerned with grammar “rules.”
  • How Annie’s own cross-country trip in her twenties helped shape the emotional core of this incredible road trip story.

This week, I’m sharing an accompanying book list of 29 books about road trips, including new releases and backlist titles, that speak to the ripple effects of substance use across families and generations.

The Road to Tender Hearts Book Summary

At sixty-three years old, million-dollar lottery winner PJ Halliday would be the luckiest man in Pondville, Massachusetts, if it weren’t for the tragedies of his life: the sudden death of his eldest daughter and the way his marriage fell apart after that. Since then, PJ spends both his money and his time at the bar, and he probably doesn’t have much time left—he’s had three heart attacks already.

But when PJ reads the obituary of his old romantic rival, he realizes his high school sweetheart, Michelle Cobb, is finally single again. Filled with a new enthusiasm for life, PJ decides he’s going to drive across the country to the Tender Hearts Retirement Community in Arizona to win Michelle back.

Before PJ can hit the road, tragedy strikes Pondville, leaving PJ the sudden guardian of his estranged brother’s grandchildren. Anyone else would be deterred from the planned trip, but PJ figures the orphaned kids might benefit from getting out of town. PJ also thinks he can ask Sophie, his adult daughter who’s adrift in her twenties, to come along to babysit. And there’s one more surprise addition to the roster: Pancakes, a former nursing home therapy cat with a knack of predicting death, who recently turned up outside PJ’s home.

This could be the second chance PJ has long hoped for—a fresh shot at love and parenting—but does he have the strength to do both those things again? It’s very possible his heart can’t take it.

Jessica Guerrieri- Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Thursday, May 22nd, 2025

In this Jessica Guerrieri interview, we discuss her debut, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, and how 12 years of sobriety shaped this unforgettable tale.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a raw and emotionally resonant debut that examines the insidious nature of alcohol addiction and how it distorts relationships, parenting, and one woman’s self-perception. In this conversation, Jessica shares how her twelve-year sobriety journey shaped the story and why telling the truth about addiction matters.

In this heartfelt and powerful conversation, Jessica and I discuss:

  • How Jessica’s sobriety journey helped her write Leah’s addiction story with such emotional clarity
  • The mental gymnastics of addiction—and what she wants readers to understand about recovery
  • How the sober community rallied around her and helped usher her novel into the world
  • The truths about AA meetings that might surprise readers
  • Why she chose to blur the lines between literary fiction and women’s fiction in her genre-bending debut

This episode is part of our Summer Author Series, which features fourteen incredible voices from our 2025 Summer Reading Guide.

This week, I’m sharing a companion book list of 19 addiction fiction reads with new release and backlist titles that speak to the ripple effects of substance use across families and generations.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea Book Summary

Swept off her feet by the gentle charm of Lucas O’Connor, Leah’s unexpected pregnancy changes the course of her carefree and nomadic existence. Over a decade and three children later, Leah is unraveling. She resents the world in which her artistic aspirations have been sidelined by the overwhelming demands of motherhood, and the ever-present rift between herself and her mother-in-law, Christine, is best dulled by increasingly fuller glasses of wine.

Christine represents a model of selfless motherhood that Leah can neither achieve nor accept. To heighten the strain, Lucas’s business venture, a trendy restaurant that honors his mother, has taken all his attention, which places the domestic demands squarely on Leah’s shoulders. Seeking an ally in her sweet sister-in-law Amy, Leah shares a secret that, if made known to the wider family, could disrupt the curated ecosystems that keep the O’Connors connected.

As Leah dances with the devil while descending further into darkness, her behavior becomes more erratic and further alienates her from both Lucas and the wider family. Leah’s drinking threatens the welfare of her family, prompting Amy to turn to Christine for support. A duel for loyalty ensues. When the inevitable waves come crashing down, it’s the O’Connor women who give Leah a lifeline: the truth of what they’ve all endured. But Leah alone must uncover the villain of her own story, learn how to ask for help, and decide if the family she has rejected will be her salvation or ultimate undoing.

The 2025 MomAdvice Summer Reading Guide includes 56 books, including upcoming releases, new releases, and backlist. Browse 39 pages of fun for your best summer.

Welcome to one of my favorite days of the year- the official reveal of the 2025 MomAdvice Summer Reading Guide! This year’s guide features 56 handpicked titles across every genre to help you find the perfect book for your summer reading mood.

A recent health challenge shifted how and why I read, making this season’s selections more intentional, joy-filled, and personal than ever before.

From the ninety-eight books I read for this season, I’m spotlighting four unforgettable debut novels that stole my heart and should be at the top of your TBR on the Book Gang podcast. These fresh new voices are ones I’ll be championing all season long, and I hope they become new favorites for you, too.

Grab a notebook (or open your Libby app!) to reserve all these gorgeous books for this year’s fun, and let’s deep dive into the WHY behind this year’s selections in today’s episode.

Allison Larkin- Home of the American Circus (Podcast Interview)

Allison Larkin- Home of the American Circus (Podcast Interview)

In this Allison Larkin interview, we discuss writing Home of the American Circus and the creative writing routines that have transformed her life with ADHD.

This week, I’m talking with my friend and bestselling author Allison Larkin about her latest novel, Home of the American Circus. But this conversation goes far beyond crafting this sprawling family drama. Allison is pulling back the curtain on how she writes such emotionally resonant stories while navigating ADHD and the beautiful writing habits she’s uncovered by simply embracing her creative brain.

Home of the American Circus is set in Somers, NY—the birthplace of the American circus and the author’s hometown. Freya must return home after a financial emergency in this beautiful family drama. The house she’s returned to is crumbling, and the relationships are even more so. But when she discovers her 15-year-old niece secretly living there, she unravels her past and reimagines what healing might look like.

In this warm conversation, Allison and I discuss:

  • What writing with ADHD actually looks like for her—and the tools that help her workflow
  • How neurodivergent representation shaped her character and why this representation matters
  • The magic of working with longtime audiobook narrator Julia Whelan and what it is like to hear her books read by the prolific narrator for the first time
  • How her creative hobbies breathe life into her fictional world and the new pursuits that are helping her find her voice

This episode is part of our Summer Author Series, which launches May 16th and features fourteen incredible voices from our 2025 Summer Reading Guide.

Circus Books from MomAdvice.com

To go with today’s theme, I’ve also created an immersive circus books book list featuring 22 unforgettable titles that are filled with magic, mystery, and unforgettable adventure under the big top.

Home of the American Circus by Allison Larkin

Home of the American Circus Book Summary

The acclaimed author of the “lyrical coming-of-age novel” (Good Morning AmericaThe People We Keep returns with a luminous new story of redemption, breaking generational curses, and the power of family in its truest form.

After an emergency leaves her short on rent, thirty-year-old Freya Arnalds bails on her lackluster life as bartender in Maine and returns to her suburban hometown of Somers, New York, to live in the house she inherited from her estranged parents. Despite attempts to lay low, Freya encounters childhood friends, familial enemies, and old flames—as well as her fifteen-year-old niece, Aubrey, who is secretly living in the derelict home. As they reconnect, Freya and Aubrey lean on each other, working to restore the house and come to terms with the devastating events that pulled them apart years ago.

Set in the birthplace of the American circus, this deeply moving novel is an exploration of broken families, the weight of the past, and the complicated journey of finding home.
