Lidija Hilje's mesmerizing debut brings the Croatian coastline alive and has been my favorite debut of 2025.

This tender, politically resonant story showcases a woman navigating a second act in her thirties—caregiving for her father, resisting a hollow development deal, and quietly grieving a love that's moved on without her. 

Hilje writes with the aching clarity of someone who knows how deeply place shapes identity and how hard it is to rebuild when the world keeps pulling the ground out from under you.

As an American reader, it opened my eyes to our parallel challenges in our countries, and I recommend this book as the perfect midlife book club selection.

This novel is one of the most researched books I have read, as the author traveled to over a dozen countries to gather accounts from passengers, their families, and even deep-sea divers to round out this story.

Mogenstern's story isn't for every reader, but it is a great fit for fans of immersive, nonlinear storytelling.

Structured as six books, a graduate student discovers a mysterious book that leads him into a hidden world of stories beneath the surface of reality. This lush, genre-bending fantasy drips with symbolism offering readers an endless ocean of puzzling possibilities to uncover.

I encourage every reader to listen to this on audiobook as Marcellus vividly comes to life through Michael Urie's narration. It is an unforgettable reading experience.

This gripping locked-room thriller will keep your heart racing until the very last page.

As his body and identity shift like the tides, their love is tested by the unpredictable, primal forces of nature. Wren rises to the challenge in beautiful ways as she modifies their backyard into a safe swimming haven and finds food to meet Lewis's needs.

I highly recommend listening to my episode with Emily, which has become one of Book Gang listeners' favorites.
