7 Ways to Stay Connected During Busy Seasons

7 Ways to Stay Connected During a Busy Season MomAdvice.com

While we are in the middle of the busy holiday season, it is hard to stay connected and schedule time to be together. We’ve learned some simple ways to spend time together that won’t increase your stress levels!

I told someone the other day that my husband and I aren’t even ships passing in the night right now. We’re more like ships in completely different oceans.

Thankfully, we do live in the same house.

My husband isn’t deployed or traveling extensively for work.

But he does work incredibly long hours on the night shift, which means our time together – as a couple and as a family – is extremely limited.

Recently we’ve been attending a marriage class at our church, and one of the topics we’ve covered is connection.

In our particular group it felt like my husband and I have a unique struggle, but I know that’s not the case in general.

I have many friends whose husbands are gone at either unusual or unpredictable times or for extended time (and sometimes both).

When one or both spouses are away from home a lot, staying connected can be difficult.

If you or your husband work an odd shift, work more than one job, work in law enforcement or medicine, own or run a business, serve in the military, or any other number of things that keep you busy, connecting with him may take what feels like a superhuman effort.

And, of course, if you’re already running on steam because of that exhausting schedule, that make seem impossible!

But it’s not.

Staying connected to your husband doesn’t mean you need to plan (and pay for – ugh!) a weekend getaway every month.

You don’t need to schedule walks on the beach or candlelit dinners, or fear the consequences. (Although, let’s be honest. If you live near the beach or own candles, those things never hurt!)

Staying connected to your husband during super busy, crazy chaotic seasons can happen with a few simple, intentional moves.

First, maybe we should define “staying connected,” though.

When I use that phrase, I mean that both spouses maintain a warm feeling about one another, showing each other kindness and attempting to make the other one feel loved on a regular basis.

What keeping that loving feeling looks like, tangibly and practically, in YOUR marriage?

That’s up to you (and your husband)!

Now, on to the tips!

7 Ways to Stay Connected During Busy Seasons

Date Nights: I know, I know – big surprise! Date nights = everyone’s solution for improving your marriage! But seriously, you guys. Finding time to spend together, alone, is crucial. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive. Last week we had our monthly date night scheduled but I couldn’t find a babysitter. So I reserved a movie rental and made sure we had popcorn in the pantry, and we still had time together after putting the girls to bed.

Eat a Meal Together: Since we’re already talking about busy seasons, it’s obvious that eating dinner together each evening may be difficult or even impossible. But if you can’t eat dinner together, can you eat breakfast at the same time? Meet for lunch? Feed the kids at the normal time and eat with your husband later? Skype while you eat your meals in completely different time zones? However you arrange it, something about sharing a meal creates a closeness that can’t be duplicated with other food-free interactions.

Send Him a Message: I send my husband a text message each night before going to bed. It’s the end of my day but the middle of his work day, and I just want to make sure he knows I’m thinking of him. We’ve also started using Voxer, a voice message (and text message) app on our phones that allow us to leave messages for each other when we’re thinking about it – without waking each other up (a problem since our schedules are opposite). Maybe those things would work for you, or perhaps you need nightly phone calls or morning Skype dates. The point is to keep communicating so you can stay on the same page, even if you’re not in the same room.

Watch a Show Together: One of the perks to having a husband who works nights is that I don’t have to share the remote or negotiate the shows we watch. However, it also means that we’ve picked a handful of shows that we record and watch together on the weekend. And when “our” shows aren’t on, we watch something together on Netflix.

Others might say that watching TV together isn’t spending quality time together. But for us, it is. It’s something we only do together and it’s something we have in common. And though you might not think deep conversations could come from watching an episode of Castle or catching up on all five seasons of Friday Night Lights, you would be wrong.

7 Ways to Stay Connected During a Busy Season MomAdvice.com

Share a Hobby: If TV isn’t your thing, maybe you could read a book together and discuss it when you finally have time together. Or plant a garden together or refinish furniture together or train for a 5K together. (Or train for a 5K separately and then run the race together.) As long as you’re doing something together that you both enjoy, you’re connecting!

Write Him a Letter: My husband doesn’t know it, but on the rare occasion he leaves a note for me (“Don’t forget toilet paper at the store,” “Please wake me up at 4:30,” “Here’s that check to deposit.”), I keep them. There’s something special about seeing his handwriting and his words written just for me – even if they are about mundane, everyday things. It reminds me of the days when we dated and exchanged notes and letters, the days when the most serious thing we had to discuss was our feelings for each other.

Today I’m more likely to send that nightly text or scribble a sentence or two in a birthday card than write him a love letter. But I do think about it sometimes. I wonder if I could convince him to share a journal where we left each other notes. I wonder if I could make time to actually write him a letter. On paper. With a pen. I can’t say I have experience with this tip, but after all my wondering, I’m certain that doing this – even every once in a while – would amp up my connection with my husband.

Think Happy Thoughts: Even before my husband worked nights, he worked evenings. And before that, he worked two jobs. So we’ve had lots of practice fighting the drift of missed connection. For many years I spent that time alone, annoyed and resentful. I’ve learned that strategy is NOT the way to stay connected with your husband, in case you were wondering.

I’ll be completely honest: I still struggle with resentment sometimes. A schedule like ours is super annoying and can be super frustrating, too. But when I maintain a good attitude, focusing on the good parts of our life, remembering all the many reasons I love him, and expressing gratitude instead of grumbling, it’s a whole lot easier to connect with my husband when he finally gets home.

November Happy List

December 5th, 2019

Thanksgiving 2019

How the heck are you?

It is that fun time of the month where I get to share what’s been making me happy this month.

I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families. I know we had a more relaxed holiday this year and that was SO very welcome.

Thankful list

Thanksgiving get the tutorial for my table runner for the holidays

There, honestly,  has been a lot going on at our house these days.  Not only did what we celebrate the holidays with my husband’s family, but my sister also got married this month too.

I am so excited to see the next chapter of her life unfold and got her this as a wedding gift to celebrate those new milestones with their new family members.

Isn’t that the best little gift?

I was also thankful to see my daughter’s thankful list this year (which then topped MY thankful list). Anyone with a teenage daughter knows how special these little things are right now.

diy chunky knit blanket pattern

Speaking of my sweet girl, we are celebrating her FOURTEENTH birthday this month.

Her birthday request was one of my diy chunky knit blankets

I have a feeling another girl in our house would like this for a gift too.

Paper Poppies Pattern

Paper Poppies get the paper poppy pattern

This has also been my first time being a part of the annual holiday ball committee for our local Junior League and the festivities are happening this weekend.

Our theme is, “A Night in Emerald City,” and we are adorning each of the bouquets with paper poppies for the centerpieces. This is  a sweet little nod to Dorothy’s nap in the flowers, in the film.

It was so fun to make these with our new members this year and I’m excited to lead the committee next year.

I have, definitely, learned a ton about event planning through this experience.

Before I share the happy list, I would also love to say a special thank you to each of you for doing your holiday shopping through our site this year.

Our family has appreciated your support so much and shopping our affiliate links helps us keep the lights on at MomAdvice.

My November Happy List Fun and Reviews

My New “Fauxse” Recipe

I don’t know the proper spelling for a fake rose, but I’m going to call my recipe the “Fauxse” fix that I needed to unwind with in the evening.

I’m trying to slow my roll with wine, but definitely crave a little something fun after a long day of work. That’s how I came up with this super easy recipe for a drink that seems to help me get my wine fix.

Take one can of La Croix (plain or lime flavor) and add one Nuun Strawberry Lemonade Tablet. Add crushed ice and serve in a copper mug.

It is DELICIOUS and is a great way to hydrate. My husband says it is nothing like wine, but I think it works as a great alcohol-free option.

I always try to keep a roll of these electrolytes in my purse too, especially if I am going to be drinking.

Adding one of these tablets to a glass of water (or sparkling water) really helps reduce wine hangovers, especially during the fa-la-la season.  (shop for Nuun Tablets)

Dolly Parton's America

Dolly’s America Podcast

You don’t need to be a big Dolly Parton fan to appreciate the new podcast, Dolly’s America. I did happen to be a huge fan though, but am learning SO much more about Dolly through the interviews that are within this podcast.

The big exploration of the podcast is how Dolly was able to rise to fame, when so few women in country were, and why she has such wide appeal with EVERYONE.

You could be a gay liberal or a religious conservative and show up to a lovely Dolly concert together because Dolly has an uncanny ability to find common ground among all her fans.

What is this magical quality and how do we unlock it when we ALL need it more than ever?

My husband and I have been listening to this one in the evenings and it is absolutely fascinating and such a great way to look at such a well-loved icon in country music.

I have gotten chills through moments, cried, and laughed through her incredible story.

I think you will love it too. (listen to the podcast)

Ugg Rain Boot Socks

My Cozy Boot Socks Are Back On

If you haven’t heard me rave about my UGG rain boots, I am here to tell you that they are my FAVORITE rain boots. I have wide feet and these fit perfectly, with room to put on thicker socks.

It also has the cozy UGG insert (PSSST- even if you don’t have these boots, I bet you could add these cozy inserts to your current boots!!) so my feet are always warm.

These boot socks though REALLY make the boots adorable and I get more compliments on those than any other shoes I wear.

I wear them so much that they could probably stand on their own and walk themselves to the washer.

I’m also already bookmarking these adorable additions for a fun holiday gift to myself. Merry Christmas, to me!

I can’t recommend them enough especially because they are MUCH more affordable than the ol’ Hunter Boots! (shop the bootsshop the knitted boot insertshop the faux fur insert)

The Kanopy App Through My Library

When I was doing research on how to check out library books for free on your Kindle, I stumbled upon a resource for something that I didn’t know existed at our library.

Have you heard of Kanopy? The Kanopy app can be used through your phone, laptop, or even your Roku.

On Kanopy’s about page, this is how they define their service: “The films that truly resonate with us do more than just entertain. They inspire us, enrich us, and challenge our perspectives. Kanopy ensures that these films reach viewers around the world.”

If you love a good documentary or indie film, you can check out (up to) ten movies for free monthly with your library card.

A lot of the award-winning indie films don’t make it to my small town so this has been a dream come true to be able to stream so many great films that I would not have known about. (check out the free Kanopy app here)

Two Movies I Loved Through Kanopy

Of course, I can’t just tell you about the app, I wanted to share two great recommendations for you to stream!

Hearts Beat Loud

Single dad and record store owner Frank (Nick Offerman) is preparing to send his hard-working daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to college, while being forced to close his shop.

Hoping to stay connected through their shared musical passions, Frank urges Sam to turn their weekly “jam sesh” into a father-daughter live act.

After their first song becomes an Internet breakout, the two embark on a journey of love, growing up and musical discovery.

I find Nick Offerman to be incredibly charming and he plays this part in such a beautiful and vulnerable way that it made my eyes well up.

This beautifully shares how hard it is to let our children go off to college and also how hard it is for people to leave their loved ones behind to grow up.

This is just the sweetest story and I can see why it was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival & the SXSW Film Festival.

Tell It To the Bees

If you are looking for a beautiful historical fiction film, I absolutely loved, “Tell It To The Bees.”

In 1952 Dr. Jean Markham (Anna Paquin) returns to her Scottish hometown to take over her late father’s medical practice.

She soon becomes ostracized by the community when she begins a passionate romance with a young mother named Lydia (Holliday Grainger).

This movie is just BEAUTIFUL and the acting is incredible.

It is a coming-of-age story too for Lydia’s son. He has to decide who he must side with (his community or his mother) and they show these challenges in such a real way.

This was an Official Selection at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Verilux Happy Light

My Happy Light

I do feel like I need to mention again how thankful I am for this happy light gadget, especially after the time switch!

Seasonal depression is no joke and the Midwest winters can be brutal on a girl’s happiness levels.

I bought a tabletop happy light that is supposed to help remedy the winter blues, give you more energy, and regulate those sleep cycles.

I read a lot of articles about it (I found this one to be really straightforward ) and it is recommended that the light should be 10,000 lux.

When browsing, you will find ones in a cheaper price bracket, but they aren’t offering the 10,000 lux that are recommended for effective treatment so I went for the big guns.

I use this for an hour in the morning with a good book and a tall cup of coffee.

It is super important to be consistent and so I aim for around the same time and duration each day.

I love that this is so small that it could be taken on trips, when we travel, and doesn’t take up a lot of storage in our home.

If you struggle with the seasonal blues or regulating those sleep cycles, this is a great low-risk drug-free investment to try!

Book Clamp Stand

The Book Table Clamp That Saves My Neck

I have been REALLY excited (and swamped) with screening all 12 of our book club selections for 2020.

That means, my head is in a book all day and that causes me a ton of neck and back issues.

You don’t need to be a book blogger to benefit from having your books at eye level.

Originally, I bought this book clamp (shown above)  because I was having shoulder and hand issues.  What I discovered though was the enormous relief there was when I didn’t have my head in a bent position to read.

The company took these off the market for awhile, but I’ve been faithfully checking to see if they brought it back because I get asked about it a lot.

LEVO carries two different varieties and it really depends on your budget and your own physical needs on which option works best for you.

I mention this today because this would make an incredible holiday gift to yourself.

I use it every dang day.

I recommend it for any power reader or anyone who struggles with holding a book or suffers from neck/back issues.

This is the more expensive version, but you can roll it. That’s really awesome if you are a senior or if you picture yourself walking it around your house and need the extra wheel help.

The less expensive version is this clamp stand. Keep in mind, this would be only for digital devices (like, if you read a lot on an iPad or Kindle). If you want to secure a printed book, you just buy this add-on (which is freaking amazing) and switch it out.

They both are amazing and have made a big difference in my reading life.

Electric Kettle

The Electric Kettle Makes The Whole Family’s Happy

Years ago, I got the opportunity to take a tour around Celestial Seasonings to share with our readers (have you been? you can read more here).

They gave us all electric kettles, as a gift, to brew our teas at home and I never realized how amazing it is to have hot water ready in seconds and to keep warm all day for tea and cocoa sipping.

It has also come in handy for a quick bowl of oatmeal or for a cup of noodles.

It feels downright luxurious to have hot water at the ready in the winter months.

They have a lot of varieties- just pick a model with good reviews and that fit your family budget.

Looking for something to mix up for sipping? We made our first batch of cocoa mix (the secret ingredient is instant pudding!) and our first batch of vanilla chai mix.

Wouldn’t this make the best gift idea too? An electric kettle, a homemade drink mix, and a fun mug So easy and thoughtful!!

thredup

Affordable Holiday Cocktail Dresses

If you have any holiday events coming up, don’t forget to check thredUP for your fancy frocks. I scored an INCREDIBLE cocktail dress for $19.98…NO JOKE.

Here is my trick to finding EXACTLY what I need when shopping consignment through thredUP.

Search for Dresses and then narrow down your categories to what cuts fit you best and what length you are looking for. Select the type of dresses you need (Formal or Cocktail) and then you can even sort by color.

Also, this is my first stop for accessories. If you need a clutch, pretty jewels, or a new pair of dancing shoes, check here!

You have FOURTEEN days to return the items.

If you haven’t shopped before, this is where 90% of my wardrobe comes from. I feel good about giving these clothes a new home and I also love the savings. It’s a win for being eco-friendly and a win for my wallet too. Here is $10 to put toward your own holiday frocks.

A quick word on their return policy-

    • As soon as you know that you are returning it, go ahead and get your return labels printed so you don’t forget.
    • These items are used so read those descriptors carefully so you can reduce your returns. I look for items with tags, that say they look like new, or gently used. I also avoid dry cleaning because it will never happen- I have no time for one more errand.
    • Make sure that no item you are getting says FINAL SALE. That means that you don’t have the option to return it if it doesn’t fit or ends up not being your style.
    • They do charge a restocking fee ($1.99). They give you a full store credit if you return an item, or you can opt for a cash return, but they charge $8.99 to give you cash. Obviously, I always go with the store credit.
    • If you receive multiple orders, you can condense your carbon footprint and just return everything in one box. No need to make it complicated.

Brittany Runs a Marathon

If you are looking for a good movie to watch this weekend, I can’t recommend, “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” enough.

This movie is based on the truly transformative story of a woman who changes her life through running.

Brittany is down on her luck in every way- she’s broke, she surrounds herself with toxic people, and she sabotages her life with booze and food.

When a neighbor challenges her to join a running club, Brittany decides to train for the New York City Marathon.

She starts with just running around the block, but it builds into an INCREDIBLE transformation that no one (including herself) could ever expect.

She finds love and community through the hobby and it takes her on a path she never knew she could explore.

I can’t recommend this one enough- it was endearing, real, funny, and beautiful. This is available free through Prime!

skillshare

Skillshare Classes

My husband gifted me a Skillshare membership for Christmas one year and I can’t recommend it enough for giving as gifts (or as a gift to yourself).

This is an affordable way to take courses on anything you might be interested in.

I’ve taken classes on loom weaving, marketing courses, photography classes, how to take better Instagram photos, understanding SEO, and courses on home decorating.

I love to do these classes during my lunch hour.

It’s a great way to learn a skill and I love that I can do this from the comfort of my own home.

Here are two free months of a premium membership, if you would like to give this one a spin too. It would make such a fun stocking stuffer!

Memory Foam Chair Cushion

My New Desk Chair Cushion

As we ramp up towards the next round of holiday fun, I have been working long hours at my desk. I decided to get one of these memory foam desk seat cushions for my office chair to see if it would help make these hours a tad easier on my body.

Not only does this make the seat more cushy, it also helps force your body into better alignment so that you don’t suffer from so much back pain after a day at the desk. I can’t believe the difference this makes in my posture and in how I feel after a long day of work.

This would make a great gift for anyone who has a desk job or as a gift to yourself to help your body feel better after a day of work. (shop it here)

I hope you enjoyed this month’s round-up of November fun. I hope my month of happy brings a month of happy to you too! If this post doesn’t convince you my newsletter is fun, I’ve got nothing. Sign up over here to get this fun weekly in your inbox.

I can’t believe that we have another month behind us in our Passive Income Ideas for Moms series.  I have been SO thrilled to get so many messages and comments from women who have been taking this challenge with me and are feeling empowered to start investing in themselves.

Today I get to reveal the results from my month of investing with Ellevest.

Honestly, as exciting as it was to share with you about Rakuten, I was ten times more excited to start my first portfolio with some of my earnings from MomAdvice.

If you have been intimidated by the investment process (*raises hand*) I think you will be really happy to hear how easy this was and how incredibly thankful I am that I started doing this.

What I Earned From One Month Investing With Ellevest

What is Ellevest?

Ellevest is a woman-owned company that focuses on building investment portfolios. What makes it unique is that they have something called an, “Impact Portfolio,”  that allow you to invest in stocks that support women in business.

This is a robo advisor tool that makes investing easy and also doesn’t cost the consumer an arm and a leg.

Robo advisors (also known as automated investing services or online advisors) use computer algorithms and advanced software to create an investment portfolio for you.

They are referred to as robo because this is mostly an automated process that requires little to no human interaction.

This translates into cost-savings for you because they are using these automated tools to build your portfolio.

The biggest difference between this company and other companies is that their focus is on wealth-building for women by investing in other women.

They call these portfolios, “Impact Portfolios,” because you are making a positive impact on women.

Pretty cool, right?

For an Impact Portfolio, they use these three key criterias in selecting your investments:

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP

Funds investing in companies with more women leaders and policies that advance women.

SUSTAINABLE, ACCOUNTABLE COMPANIES

Funds investing in companies working to meet  for sustainability and ethical practices.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Funds providing loans to support women-owned businesses and companies that provide community services – child education, performing arts, and housing and care for seniors and individuals in need.

They also realize that women have different life spans than men and they adjust your retirement requirements accordingly.

How Much Did I Invest This Month with Ellevest?

Just as a reminder, there is no minimum balance to open your account!

I decided to set up a one-time deposit of $2,000 into this account and then set up automatic deposits of $300 monthly into my wealth-building account.

I also wanted to create a little vacation fund for us so I have $50 going into a one-time splurge account that we will be able to earn some money on while we save.

Just as a reminder, I did work one month ahead so I could walk you through the process of setting up an account.

Technically, I invested $300 in my wealth-building account and $50 into our splurge account for the month of November.

Investment Goals with Ellevest

What Types of Accounts Did I Invest in With Our Money?

Ellevest is set up in a simple goal-oriented format that, basically, allow you to set up buckets for investing.

Anyone who has been a fan of the envelope system for savings will appreciate this. Basically, it is a virtual envelope system to invest in yourself.

I selected their Impact Portfolio over their Core Portfolio because my goal is to have a great retirement…while lifting up other women.

Choosing this portfolio allowed me to do both those things.

I also created a splurge fund to put towards a future family vacation.

Was It Easy to Earn Money Through Ellevest?

YES, this is SO easy because you are putting your investing on automatic.

Once you set up those goals for your account, you tell Ellevest what day of the month you would like your automatic withdrawal to happen and that’s it.

I haven’t had to think about investing at all because it all has been done for me automatically.

If there is anything I’ve learned through this wealth-building series it is how important it is to automate these investments in myself.

What I Earned From One Month Investing With Ellevest

What Was the Outcome of My Ellevest Portfolio?

In October, I earned $56.89, in net returns, after opening my account with $2,000.

In November, I deposited an additional $300, earning me $71.64 (for the month of November).

In total, I’ve earned $128.53 with Ellevest in two months.

I don’t know about you, but that’s a heck of a lot more than what I was earning with my money sitting in my bank account.

For my modest $50 splurge fund deposit, I earned $2.80 on my monthly investment.

What Did It Cost Me to Invest With Ellevest?

This tool is much cheaper than hiring a financial advisor because a more personalized services can charge you a whopping 1% annually.

With Ellevest, your annual management fee is .25%.

If you saved $5,000, for example, you would pay $12.50 for the entire year.

For the amount that is within these accounts, my charge was $1.80.

This amount will shift as more money is invested, of course.

Ellevest Impact Portfolio Example

Did I Really Support Women By Investing With Ellevest?

Earning money is great, but did I make any impact on women in business?

Good news… I did!

How do I know this?

If you look at my Impact Portfolio (see the image above) you will see these green circles with icons that tell me why they picked these stocks and how it impacts others.

This icon tells me that I’m supporting Women in Leadership. These funds invested make an impact on women leaders and policies that advance women.

This icon tells me that I’m supporting Sustainable, Accountable Companies.

These funds invested make an impact on companies that are working to meet higher standards for sustainability and ethical practices.

What I Earned From One Month Investing With Ellevest from MomAdvice.com

As you can see, 53% of my portfolio really goes into those impact funds. Impact funds are the ones that are distributed to women in leadership, sustainable companies, and to community development.

Why am I not 100% invested in women though?

As a fiduciary, Ellevest prioritizes the appropriate mix of investments to help you reach your goals.

This means a low-cost, globally diversified portfolio invested across many asset classes.

At this time, there are not sufficient impact investments to meet their fiduciary criteria for all of their asset classes.

They do continuously monitor the marketplace for new impact investments that they believe are suitable for your Ellevest Impact Portfolio.

In a nutshell, they research each impact investment in your Ellevest Impact Portfolio to ensure it meets their fiduciary standards.

Then they make it even greater by investing to make a positive impact in the world.

Did I Really Earn Money on Referrals Through Ellevest?

Ellevest does have a referral program (open to everyone) that you make a referral credit for each person that signs up and have created an actual account.

That means, the accounts must be fully funded for you to receive a referral credit.

Credits are then applied to your highest-priority funded goal.

If it’s a taxable account (not an IRA), the credit is applied as a one-time deposit and you’ll see it as a pending transaction in your goal.

The major complaints about Ellevest had been about the referral program.

If people haven’t went through the process of establishing the account and making a deposit though, you don’t get credit for that.

For example, I have 13 pending accounts that just might be waiting for this results post before they go through the process of setting that up with their bank.

For now, I have earned $100 on referrals that are being added to my account.

Not only that, but once you refer two friends (that have fully vested) you are considered an Elle Raiser Ambassador.

The title “ambassador” just tells the world about the leadership role you’ve taken on in the Elle Raiser community: talking the talk, walking the walk by bringing their friends, family, colleagues — fill in the blank — into the movement of supporting women through your investments.

If you didn’t know,  MomAdvice is all about empowering women and I’m proud to be doing exactly what I set out to do over sixteen years ago.

Will I Continue Investing With Ellevest?

YES!  This has been such an easy thing to automate in my life and I’m so proud to be investing in myself.

November ended up being our most profitable month on the site and once that money deposits, I’m moving it right on over to my retirement.

I can’t imagine not investing in myself now.

If you want to start investing in yourself too, here is $20 to get your account started!! Don’t hold me to this, but I noticed they are now giving you $50 to start an account so don’t be surprised if you get a $50 deposit instead!!

What I Have I Earned So Far With Ellevest?

I have earned $130.22 with Ellevest and an additional $100 through their referral program.

Earnings totaled: $230.32

Here are 6 must-read books I tackled in October & November:

Speaking of Summer

Speaking of Summer by Kalisha Buckhanon

I will admit that I was attracted to this book because of its vibrant and creative cover, but I was also intrigued by the description of the mystery within its pages.

Autumn’s twin sister, Summer, walks to the rooftop of their shared Harlem brownstone and is never seen from again.

As a woman of color, she knows how many women go missing and society and police can be complacent in these missing person cases. She meets often with the detective to talk through the clues and concerns, in Summer’s case, hoping that she can help find her sister.

As time progresses, Autumn does her best to hold it all together, but begins to unravel as her obsession grows to try to solve the disappearance. What happens though when no one seems to care about a woman of color?

This started out so strong and the answer to the mystery was done incredibly well. Buckhanon uses this book to shed light on bigger themes like race, mental health, and addiction. It, truly, sucks the reader in.  I was stunned by the twist and talked about it for days afterwards.

This one missed the mark, for me, at times with consistency and keeping the plot moving once Summer’s whereabouts are revealed.

Despite the inconsistency, I really loved the creativity that went into this novel and Buckhanon’s beautiful writing.

I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

Things in Jars by Jess Kidd

Things in Jars by Jess Kidd (available for pre-order)

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishing house for providing a review copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I fell in love with Jess Kidd’s writing after listen to, “Himself,” on audiobook (full review here) last year. There was something so unique about her storytelling that blended a great Irish ghost story with an incredible amount of heart and humor.  This is why I knew that I was in for something good when I snagged an advanced reader of, “Things in Jars.”

Kidd takes a darker turn with a female detective, Bridie Devine, who is trying to solve the kidnapping of Christabel Berwick, the secret daughter of Sir Edmund Athelstan Berwick.

The child has been kept away in secret from society because of her peculiarities and supernatural powers. At this time, in Victorian London, peculiarities are displayed as marvels in traveling circuses (or worse) children are killed to display these oddities in jars for collectors and for profit.

Bridie is determined to find this girl even if it means putting her own past at risk.

She isn’t alone though, she is aided through this story by a tattooed ghost who doesn’t leave her side as she investigates.

Kidd does a great job adding her signature humor into this dark story and weaves in history and folklore that anyone can appreciate. Fans of magical realism will love this Dickensesque story that finds great beauty in the oddities.

This is much darker than her previous work and is a very macabre telling of our curiosities with collecting and displaying the peculiarities of others for profit.

For me, this one leaned a little too heavy into the magical elements that made the story feel a lot less grounded toward the end.

Overall, I was still completely swept away and would still recommend this one for your stack!

4 out of 5 Stars

The Family Upstairs

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishing house for providing a review copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If you are looking for an excellent thriller, I can’t recommend, “The Family Upstairs,” enough. The only reason this wasn’t selected for our book club is because there is already SO much buzz around it that I had a feeling that many of you may have already read it.

In this story, Libby returns home from work to find a letter written to her on her 25th birthday. Truth be told, it is the letter that she has been waiting for all her life.

Within the note, she learns the identity of her birth parents and that she is the sole inheritor of an abandoned mansion, in one of London’s most fashionable neighborhoods, that is worth millions.

Twenty-five years ago, the police were called to this very house because there were reports of a baby crying. This baby, healthy and happy, was found in her crib- safe and sound.

Downstairs though were three dead bodies, all dressed in black and the other four children all had mysteriously disappeared.

I am, admittedly, fascinated by cults and the power of charismatic leaders to manipulate people to do to unthinkable things.

The man that lives with this family ends up taking complete control over their lives requiring strict exercise, changing their attire, restricting food, manipulating people, abusing them, and alienating them from everyone in their lives.

It is especially impactful on the children who are witnessing all of this in their house and we get to see this story through their eyes too.

I was sucked into the story from the very first page and finished it in a single day.

If you were a fan of, “The Haunting of Hill House,” I have a feeling you will love this one too.

This was another Lisa Jewell home run for me!

5 out of 5 Stars

The Lying Woods The Lying Woods by Ashley Elston

Our October MomAdvice Book Club selection was, “The Lying Woods,” and I have to say that this one exceeded all of our expectations this year.

Owen Foster grew up wealthy and has never wanted for anything in his life.

That is why it is so surprising when his mother shows up to his boarding school and tells him that his privileged life has been funded by stolen money.

Owen’s father had been embezzling millions and had been draining his employees’ retirement accounts for years. When his father vanishes, he leaves behind Owen and his mother to deal with the fallout in their town.

No longer able to afford the pricey school he attends, Owen is forced to come back to his small town and deal with the aftermath at his high school.

Even though this has nothing to do with Owen, it is hard to not be resentful of the fancy life he had lead and how angry everyone is about their money being stolen from them.

What’s worse is that someone is desperate to get revenge on them.

Owen’s only refuge is the pecan orchard he works at, with Gus, who seems to know an awful lot about Owen’s family.

It is here that he begins to unravel the mystery of his dad, his mom, and the secrets that were covered up to protect him so many years ago.

This was such a solid novel and yielded such a great discussion too. I listened to this one, on audiobook, and thought the narration was just incredibly done.

If you are looking for a satisfying YA mystery, I highly recommend checking this one out!

The Age of Light

The Age of Light by Whitney Scharer

The Age of Light,” was on my historical fiction reading bucket list this year after discovering that is was about a female photographer making her mark on the world in the 1930’s.

As a person who is fascinated by photography and by the hidden women of our history, I had a feeling that this would be a favorite of mine.

Lee Miller was an accomplished model before she made her way to Paris in the 1930’s.

She wasn’t content just being in front of the camera though, she aimed to be behind it instead.

Lucky for her, she met a famed Surrealist photographer, Man Ray, who gives her the opportunity to assist him. This role soon shifts though when the two fall in love.

What happens when your work and your love collide?

Well, it’s complicated and Man Ray, for sure, doesn’t like being showed up in his own field.

Lee’s life in photography (and as Man Ray’s partner) end up taking her from the cabarets of bohemian Paris to the battlefields of war-torn Europe during WWI.

As a war correspondent, she begins documenting the liberation of the concentration camps as one of the first female war correspondents, utilizing radical new photography techniques to document the liberation of the concentration camps as one of the first female war correspondents.

Overall, Lee’s life was fascinating and Scharer builds a believable strength and curiosity in Lee.

This was a strong debut from Scharer, although the story would have benefited from some trimming (at 485 pages!).

I am so glad to have learned about Lee Miller’s life and am thankful historical fiction has been a great avenue for learning about stories like these.

Want to see some of Lee’s war photos? Look at these amazing images!

The Library Book The Library Book by Susan Orlean

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishing house for providing a review copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Library Book was chosen as our MomAdvice Book Club selection for November. As someone who is crazy about the library, I thought this would be a great nonfiction pick as it explores the history of the establishment and a mystery surround the 1986 fire in the Los Angeles Public Library.

Didn’t know there was a fire there?

Neither did most people!

Orlean shares the story of a library fire that reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time the fire was extinguished, it had consumed over four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more.

For thirty years, investigators have been baffled by how this fire started and the mysterious reason why it happened.

Orlean is, clearly, a big fan of the library and she weaves in a lot of fun facts and a bigger story about the role that the library plays in our lives.

There is a wide cast of characters as she shares the stories of people from libraries past and present.

Overall, this should have been a really enthralling read. The fire and how the community rallied together was, definitely, the most fascinating part.

No one can understand the aftermath of what that looked like or, frankly, how it would impact the people who worked there.

This is one of those cases though where I felt like the author could have benefited from an editor. I listened to this one on audiobook and found myself zoning in and out as Orlean tried to pack in every detail about libraries past.

While well-researched, it was a little dry and I found myself wanting to fast forward to the bits about the the Los Angeles Public Library.

Make-Ahead Apple, Sausage, And Sage Sourdough Stuffing

November 25th, 2019

Make-Ahead Apple, Sausage, And Sage Sourdough Stuffing from MomAdvice.com.

I’m back again with another fun Thanksgiving make-ahead recipe.

Today’s recipe is an apple, sausage, and sage sourdough stuffing that tastes just as good as it sounds.

This recipe is easy to prepare and can be made-ahead and placed in your freezer for the big day, which means one less thing for you to worry about on the day of your big feast!

Make-Ahead Apple, Sausage, And Sage Sourdough Stuffing from MomAdvice.com.

Have you ever made your own stuffing?

It is one of the easiest and most rewarding dishes to create for the holiday season.

My grandma made a mean dressing when I was growing up, but stuffing was definitely something that came out of a box.

I remember in sixth grade when we had to do a Thanksgiving play and I was supposed to pretend to make stuffing and had no idea what the teacher was talking about when he handed me a loaf of bread and celery.

What the heck was that for?

Being the true foodie I am,  I still don’t think the boxed stuff is that bad, and you can’t beat the ease of preparation.

It doesn’t hurt to gourmet things up a bit once in awhile though, especially when you can put this in your freezer and save it for the big day!

Make-Ahead Apple, Sausage, And Sage Sourdough Stuffing from MomAdvice.com.

The biggest challenge with stuffing is all of the dicing and chopping to get the ingredients prepared.

A handy food chopper can be your best friend when chopping up ingredients like onions or herbs.

Once the ingredients are chopped though, it is just a simple matter of mixing them up and then placing the stuffing in the pan for baking.

Make-Ahead Apple, Sausage, And Sage Sourdough Stuffing from MomAdvice.com.

I really love the ingredients in this recipe because they are the perfect balance of sweet and savory.

I used turkey sausage in this recipe, but you could certainly substitute with chicken sausage instead.

I love Granny Smith apples for baking because they maintain their texture and firmness in this dish.

Leave the skins on for a little added color to your stuffing (not to mention, a little fiber too!)

To prep this dish ahead, I purchased some inexpensive foil pans and to make sure that there is no leaking from the lid.

If you are preparing right away, you can just add the apple stuffing mixture to a casserole dish instead.

I baked up a little dish for you to show you what this looks like when it is all done.

The top is crunchy and the inside is delicious and fluffy.

The apples add tartness while the onions, celery, and turkey sausage add a little savoriness to the stuffing.

When these ingredients are all baked together, it is like a little symphony in your mouth!

Reserve a few sprigs of sage to garnish the top of your dish!

A little bit sweet, a little bit savory. This sourdough stuffing filled with apples, sausage, and onions is a a delicious crowd-pleaser that can be made ahead for the holiday season.
Ingredients
  • 1 loaf sourdough bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 11 cups)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3/4 pound fresh mild turkey or chicken sausage
  • 4 Granny Smith Apples
  • 3 stalks celery, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken stock
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh sage leaves
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Reserved sage leaves (for garnish)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 300°F. Spread bread cubes out on two large rimmed baking sheets and bake until dried but not browned, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl.
  2. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Remove the sausage from the casings, and add it to the skillet to cook, breaking up chunks with a spoon, until browned, about 6 minutes.
  3. Add apples, celery, onion and butter and cook, stirring occasionally, until apple and vegetables are softened, 8 to 10 minutes more. Add to toasted bread. Stir in broth, poultry seasoning, sage, salt and pepper.
  4. Add stuffing to a freezer-safe greased 9×13 foil pan. Place in the freezer (for up to four weeks). 1-3 days before, remove the stuffing from the freezer. Drizzle a 1/2 cup additional chicken stock over the top to moisten the stuffing. Heat oven to 350°F and bake until lightly browned and crisp on top, 50 to 60 minutes. This stuffing can also be stuffed in your turkey, just be sure that the stuffing has cooled before proceeding.
  5. Garnish with fresh sage leaves.

9 Historical Fiction Novels for Middle Grades

November 25th, 2019

Historical Fiction Novels for Middle Grades MomAdvice

Are you looking for the historical fiction books to get your middle grade reader excited about history? Check out these incredible historical fiction for kids recommended by one of our favorite teachers. These great chapter books will get your middle grade child reading and learning about history.

9 Historical Fiction Novels for Middle Grades

from our reading contributor for kids, Julie.

One of my favorite genres is Historical Fiction.

I love being able to learn new facts about a time period while also being pulled in by the story and characters.

Since this is one of my favorite genres, I love introducing students to historical fiction.

It is so fun to From the California Gold Rush to the Civil War to World War I, here are nine historical fiction novels I would recommend for your middle grade child.

As a word of caution, some historical fiction novels are more graphic than others so while a book may be recommended for children 10+, it may not be a good fit for your 10+ child.

You know your child best, so use your best judgement when suggesting books to them.

By the Great Horn Spoon

California Gold Rush

By the Great Horn Spoon  – Follow twelve-year-old Jack and his butler around the Great Horn Spoon on their way to California where they hope to strike it rich.

A book filled with adventure, laugh out loud moments, and information about the Gold Rush. Age: 8+

Like a River

Civil War

Like a River: A Civil War Novel – This is the story of two teenage soldiers in the Civil War and both of their stories have a surprising twist. Leander is underage when he enlists and Polly follows her father into war disguised as his son.

As their lives intersect they will face the harsh realities of war head-on and learn about courage, loyalty, family and love. Age: 12+

The Button War

World War 1

The Button War – Set in Poland in 1914, The Button War, follows a group of boys in a war-torn village in Poland.

When a simple dare is issued, the boys set out to prove they have enough courage to follow through with the dare and things quickly get out of control.

Told from the perspective of the boys, this book is quite appealing to boys. Age: 10+

Stella by Starlight

The Great Depression

Stella by Starlight – Set in the segregated south, Stella by Starlight introduces us to Stella who lives in a time when Jim Crow laws were active.

Stella witnesses something not meant for her eyes when she heads out past her bedtime and then has to grapple with the implications and impact of this event.

A deep book with both sorrow and joy, this book will spark conversation about race relations. Age: 9+

The War That Saved My Life

World War II

The War That Saved My Life – This book is so good I’d recommend it to adults right along with kids!

Set during the war, but about so much more than the war.

As you connect with Ada and follow her journey from being locked in the house to learning to accept the kindness of strangers, you’ll experience many emotions right along with Ava.

There is a sequel to this book if you want to continue with Ada and Jamie’s story. Age: 10+

Number the Stars

Number the Stars – Set in a German-occupied Denmark, the story of how the Danish people smuggled thousands of Jews out of their country often goes untold, but it is a truly amazing story of courage and kindness.

The story follows Annemarie and Ellen and is a good way to introduce children to the Holocaust.

While not as graphic as many other World War II novels, it is still quite emotional. Age: 10+

Post-World War II

In The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson – This book tells the story of an immigrant experience in the United States during the mid-1940’s.

Shirley Temple Wong moves from China to America filled with many hopes and dreams, but the reality is more difficult than she expected.

Her unexpected connected with Jackie Robinson makes for a delightful story. Age: 8+

Ranger in Time

I Survived

Honorable Mentions

Ranger in Time & I Survived – This isn’t a recommendation for a single title, but for kids who are especially drawn to the historical fiction genre, these two series should definitely be on the list!

Ear Warmer Headband Knitting Pattern (VIDEO)

November 24th, 2019

How to Cable: Knitted Ear Warmers For Those In Need from MomAdvice.com

Learn how to knit this chunky cable knit headband. This is the perfect beginner pattern to learn how to cable. The best part? No cable needles required! Use this free knitting pattern to make these gorgeous ear warmer headbands for women that can keep those ears warm in the fall and winter.

As a knitter, I am often intimidated by things that look too complex.

I find myself gravitating towards things that I think will be easier and not even considering things that I think will take me out of my knitting comfort zone.

Cabling was one of those things for many years. It looked far too complex and I can barely handle the basics of knitting.

Here’s the thing.

It is truly one of the easiest things you can do in knitting especially when you know a few of my favorite tricks for cabling quickly.

Today I want to show you how to cable and how this project can benefit someone in need.

Ear Warmer Headband Knitting Pattern Close-Up Different Colors

This is the time of the year where the homeless and those in need really need us.

When the temperatures drop and you are in that cold-in-your-bones zone, you are welcomed by the warmth of your home, maybe a fire, and a hot drink to settle in with when you arrive home.

What if you had nowhere to escape?

Worse yet, imagine you were out in the cold without the warmth of a hat, gloves, or a scarf.

Let’s think of the children whose families can’t afford these simple luxuries of warmth.

You can’t knit a hat?

I get it!

Those double-pointed needles are a pain in the rear, aren’t they?

That is why I thought a simple knitted headband would be a great option for gift-giving and for a quick gift to share with those in need.

In fact,I highly recommend knitting a few of these for your homeless care packages to keep in your car.

Here are a few questions that I get asked a lot when it comes to knitting!

Bluprint Craft Box for Knitting

I Want to Learn to Knit. Where Can I Learn How to Knit?

Want to learn how I learned how to knit?

A good friend taught me.

She had all of her friends over that wanted to learn and I was one of the only ones that took this skill and has never stopped.

I am also pretty darn lucky because my mother-in-law is a knitter and has helped me through many of my more complex problems.

If I didn’t have these resources, I would take courses online that fit with my schedule.

Here are 5 of my recommendations on how to learn to knit. If you want to give your family a gift idea, consider asking for a gift card to cover your classes!

Skillshare

Honestly, this is going to be your most affordable option for knitting courses and I use my membership ALL THE TIME.

The best part is that you don’t have to be limited to just knitting.

This platform has classes for EVERYTHING. I have been taking an amazing weaving course through this that has helped me get started on my loom.

For business, I have been learning how to work on technical aspects of my site.

I can’t recommend it enough. In fact, this link should give you two months of free classes to get you started.

Bluprint Classes

I ask for Bluprint classes almost every Christmas (and for my birthday) and absolutely love them.

I have taken courses on knitting, cake decorating, and even food photography classes so I can do a better job showing food off for you here.

They are constantly running specials so it is easy to find an affordable class. If you like them, they also offer unlimited monthly class memberships too.

All Free Knitting

If you are on a budget, you can use this free resource to learn to knit. This is still set up as an organized course series, but costs you zero bucks.

YouTube always helps, as a great assistant, when using free online classes. I still pull up videos all the time to learn more complex stitches.

Bluprint Craft Box Subscription

Again, this is one of those fantastic gift ideas to ask for.

Bluprint (formerly Craftsy) curates incredible craft boxes that give you the supplies and everything you need to get started with a craft project.

They send you supplies, instructions, and everything you need to try a new craft. You get sent four boxes a year to learn new craft skills.

The best part?

It also includes a premium subscription so you can take unlimited online classes too.

How Do I Pick the Right Yarn for My Knitting Projects?

The yarn aisle can be very intimidating to new knitters. I can’t tell you how many times I have assisted fellow craft store shoppers with finding the right yarns for their projects.

Yarn can be light and delicate or super chunky and bulky (like the project that we are doing today).

Without getting TOO technical, the Craft Yarn Council assigns numbers to yarn that tell you what type of weight they are (you can see their detailed chart online) and these numbers can range from 0 (which would be perfect for knitting lace) all the way up to 7 (which would be used in a pattern like this chunky knit blanket I made).

At the top of the pattern, you should see what yarn weight category is recommended. While this pattern did call for 7, I felt like it became too wide and turban like (for my head) so I used a bulky weight of 5.

What is a Yarn Lot Number and Why Should I Care About It?

For small projects, you might not need to worry about this as much, but you can still end up with two balls of yarn with the same color name, but NOT be the same color.

Why?

Yarns with the same dye lot number were all dyed at the same time. Dying is a chemical reaction and that can make items dyed at different times turn out differently, even if the dye recipe was identical from one dyeing session to the next.

I could go into crazy details, but I don’t think it is important for this project.

What you should know is that it is almost impossible to get an exact match between yarns dyed in different dyeing sessions.

I am not talking about just pretty artisan yarn either, I’m talking about the big brands, like Lion Brand or Red Heart, can also have completely different dye jobs.

It happened to me once when I was whipping up a pom-pom wreath for the holidays.

Make sure that the yarn you get has the same lot number on the package (you can usually just find it by purchasing your yarn all at one store).

If you don’t, you could end up with unintended variations in your finished work.

I Have Arthritis and Hand Pain. What Can I Use to Minimize My Pain While Knitting?

If you are just stopping by from Pinterest, you might be unfamiliar with my story. I have chronic pain in my hands and elbows from a connective tissue disease.

For three years, I stopped knitting because I just couldn’t get my fingers to cooperate.

I am back to knitting (which I’m incredibly grateful for) and these are the tools that helped.

Curable– This app has been transformative for my pain. It uses cognitive behavioral therapy to help you retrain your brain and the pain signals it is sending. It has done more for me than anything else because I am learning to reroute the bad signals to my hands. This takes time and practice, but I’m thankful for a drug-free way to reduce my hand pain.

Oval Ring Splints– Oval rings can act as supporters to your fingers and are one of my most relied upon tools through hand pain. Since they are made from plastic, they can fit/not fit based on weather conditions and inflammation. I recommend one of these sets because it allows you to switch sizes based on the swelling in the joints.

Arthritis Compression Gloves– Compression is your BFF when you have chronic pain and compression gloves are so helpful for arthritis or for Raynaud’s Syndrome. I find that it restores warmth to the tips of my fingers and also feels very comforting to have them compressed.

Ergonomic Knitting Needles– While I haven’t made the investment in these (yet), I do think that this is one more thing you could explore to improve your comfort levels.

Take breaks, as needed, and be patient with yourself. I know how frustrated and sad I was about this. I hope these suggestions can help you as much as they have helped me.

(video below)

Trying to show you how to cable in a picture tutorial was a little impossible so today so I thought I would do a video.

I am so terrible at videos so please forgive me.

I’m off to a conference this week where I am hoping to learn more about doing these better for you all- it’s one of those work challenges I need to learn to tackle.

I know how helpful it can be to show these techniques in a video. Scroll to the end of this post to watch!

This cable is called a Shadow cable.

In this pattern, we will be bringing three stitches in front with our double-pointed needle and three stitchescabled laterbehind our work.

This cabling adds a double layer of warmth in this pattern and I’d love for you to scroll down to the bottom so that you can see how I do this.

How to Cable: Free Knitted Ear Warmers Pattern from MomAdvice.com

Cable needles look like this and I have a ton of them.

I hate them.

I usually lose my stitches and I find it difficult to transfer stitches especially when it comes to bulky yarn.

You can certainly buy them, but I recommend just doing a double-pointed needle one size down from the work to grab your stitches.

I am a big fan of bamboo because they grip the yarn so well especially when moving stitches around.

It’s the only type of needles I knit with!

Ear Warmer Headband Knitting Pattern from MomAdvice.com

Ear Warmer Headband Knitting Pattern from MomAdvice.com in Red

Not only are these quick to knit (they shouldn’t take you more than two hours!), but I think they look pretty fashionable too. I have noticed that many stores are now carrying these in their hair accessories.

Can we also acknowledge how cute the girls have it these days with hair accessories?

The aisles are filled with gorgeous patterned headbands, head wraps, turban headbands, and hair clips.

It has been so fun seeing the revival, for my daughter, of those adorable scrunchies and wide headbands.

I bet your tween or teen girl would love this homemade gift!

For gals with long hair, ear warmers are a dream for keeping your locks in place.

For ponytail days, you can just pull your hair through a hair band and still have warm ears.

I gave them a test run on the most miserable weather day which is ALWAYS, ALWAYS Halloween.

My husband was freezing, but I was delightfully warm thanks to these cozy ear warmers.

The cabling really adds a double warmth to them.

For particularly rotten Indiana days (I know they are coming), you can layer this under your hat for extra ear protection.

Best Advent Calendars for Kids (FREE Printable!!)

November 24th, 2019

Best Advent Calendars For Kids from MomAdvice.com

Looking for advent calendar for kids. This free printable advent calendar includes fun Christmas themed trivia questions for the holiday season. Counting down to Christmas couldn’t be more fun (or more affordable!) Download our countdown to Christmas on the blog today!

I never did an advent calendar growing up so I, honestly, had to look up what the heck these were when other moms talked about them.

In honor of today’s trivia theme, do you know how the advent calendar originated?

As with many of our Christmas traditions, this one originated out of Germany. In the early 20th century, Gerhard Lang’s mother made him a calendar with 24 small candies attached to cardboard, one for each day before Christmas.

Lang grew up and opened Reichhold & Lang printing company where he printed the first Advent cardboard calendar with 24 little pictures. Then, just a few years later, the company printed the first calendar with the little doors that everyone loves to open.

Just imagine what kind of craft celebrity Gerhard’s mom would have been on Pinterest.

That’s pretty much, an original viral project.

I am so excited to share this fun FREE printable advent calendar with you that our amazing contributor, M.J. designed for us!

Best Advent Calendars For Kids from MomAdvice.com

From our graphic designer, MJ at pars caeli

Advent calendars are just the cutest, right?

That is–until you have to fill/create/arrange them!

This year we’re going simple with our countdown to Christmas, and we want to make it easier for you, too, with a printable calendar.

This Advent Calendar needs just to be cut, folded, and glued.

Fist bump.

You can even have the kids create it.

The days leading up to Christmas are both magical and hectic!

We have Christmas performances and charitable shopping, Santa’s gifting and work parties galore.

I didn’t want our Advent countdown to be another process on the list so we put together something light and fun.

How to Make a Christmas Trivia Advent Calendar for Big Kids

Best Advent Calendars For Kids from MomAdvice.com

How about Christmas trivia?!

We watch Jeopardy around our house (with three kids, twelve and under), and a countdown with trivia seemed like a natural way to learn more and to laugh together as we get nearer to the 25th.

We put together twenty-five trivial (some are pretty ridiculous) questions about Christmas traditions, songs, and movies for the whole family.

In fact, this calendar would be great to put next to the coffee pot at work or as a runner across the dinner table.

My kids have been talking about these questions more than I imagined (“what’s your favorite Christmas song?” and “remember that time we saw…”).

Our holiday experiences can be easy entryways to new conversations and insights.

Let’s make an advent calendar together!

Supplies Needed

Craft paper

Scissors

Tape

Glue stick

A straight edge or ruler

Our printable calendar

Best Advent Calendars For Kids from MomAdvice.com

Directions for Your Free Printable Advent Calendar

STEP ONE:

Print out the numbers and trivia questions.

Set the trivia questions aside for now.

To cut your numbers, slice the page first vertically and then horizontally, creating four pieces.

You’ll then cut those four piece vertically, to make equal-sized pieces of paper.

STEP TWO:

Each number paper has light gray dotted lines to show where they should be folded.

With a ruler or straight edge, fold crisply along that line as indicated in two places.

Once you’ve made the folds, bend them the opposite direction to create a folded piece with the number on the front and a flap on the top.

STEP THREE:

Take the trivia questions back out.

Cut those along the dotted edges. Glue the questions into the inside of the numbered papers.

These are not numbered so they can go in any day.

We put ours in randomly.

There’s a question for every day from December 1 through the 25.

STEP FOUR:

Refold the bottom and then the top flap of the numbered rectangle over top of the trivia question (we don’t want anyone peeking until the right day!).

You’ll want to seal the flap shut.

You can do this with glue or tape.

We opted to cut up some adhesive labels into tiny strips so that we could peel back the flaps without destroying the calendar.

Best Advent Calendars For Kids from MomAdvice.com

That’s it!

Attach the questions to a ribbon and hang on the side of your fridge.

Or tape them to a pantry door in the shape of a tree!

Or (super simple) keep calendar days in a bowl on your dinner table, and pull one out every day.

You might find yourselves amazed by how many presents you’d get if you received all of them from the 12 Days of Christmas or laughing about what the word mistletoe really means!!

(Oh, I’ve said too much. You have to wait to open that day!)

Happy Christmas countdown from our family to yours!!

Wishing you a simply joyful holiday.

Xoxo,

MJ
