Christmas Gift Ideas Under $25 from MomAdvice.com.

As is tradition for the holiday season, today I wanted to share great gift ideas for under $25 to add to your Christmas wish list or to share with someone you love in your life.

These are a few of the items that are on my own personal wish list this year!

Fox Scarf

Mischief Maker Scarf

If you thought I was obsessed with owls this last year, I have found a new obsession with another woodland creature.

I am in love with this novelty-printed fox scarf for adding a whimsical layer to my wardrobe.

I hope Santa will wrap one of these up for me for under my Christmas tree!

Jane Austen Collectible Editions

Jane Austen (Barnes & Noble Collectible Edition)

I have never tackled a Jane Austen book although I love every movie adaptation I have ever seen of her books.

Each Christmas I ask for one of these beautiful reissued classics from Barnes & Noble and try to read it for the year.

Why just buy one book though when you can get seven in one?

I am adding this affordable 7-in-1 books to my Christmas list this year.

Work Hard Stay Humble Print

Work Hard Stay Humble Print

I am always looking for prints to add to my office and I absolutely love this reminder for my home office.

I would love to fill every room of my home with pretty font-filled motivation, but this print in particular speaks to my heart.

Celebration Cake Topper

Celebration Cake Topper

We are all about celebrating the big and little occasions around here and I would love to get this beautiful, celebration cake topper to top our baked doughnuts, cakes, and pancakes in the morning for those moments.

What a beautiful detail to add to our family celebrations!

Punny Vegetable Tote Bag

Punny Vegetable Tote

Man, my farmer’s market visits just got a lot more fun with this hilarious tote.

In all seriousness, I love a good tote bag and I think this one really delivers on the fun and functional factors.

Glass Cake Stand

Glass Cake Stand

This stand would be a perfect addition to my cake stand collection and I love the antique details on this one.

Although the $25 budget only affords me the small one, it would be just perfect for my food photography

Owl Stitch Markers

 Owl Stitch Markers

I may be moving on to the foxes this year, but I still love my owls.

For my mother-in-law last year, I got her a cute set of sock monkey stitch markers.

She says it is her favorite thing and such a fun addition to her knitting supplies.

For knitters, it can be hard to come up with fun new gifts to add to their arsenal of tools, but a cute set of personalized stitch markers are a one-of-a-kind gift that any knitter would love.

Headed to Starbucks Hat

Headed to Starbucks Hat

It’s no secret that I am a big fan of our site sponsor Flourish Boutique!

There is rarely a day you will catch me not wearing something from their beautiful shop.

This wool hat  is a perfect example of beauty and functionality.

I am crazy about anything with rosettes and these neutral colors mean it would match with anything in my wardrobe.

Q&A a Day Journal

Q & A a Day

I am always looking for new ways to journal, but I have a hard time coming up with things to write about, especially on a daily basis.

I love this idea for a journal because it offers 365 questions that you can answer over the course of five years.

I think this might help me with my writer’s block that I have when trying to find the words to describe our daily life

Forest Saunter Mug

Forest Saunter Mug

Every year I try to get one cute new mug and this year Anthropologie captured my heart with this mug  with, “these wood are lovely,” nestled inside.

I can picture enjoying my morning coffee in this one and the price tag on that fits just right too!

2 Ingredient Cranberry Pancake Syrup

2 Ingredient Cranberry Pancake Syrup

Continuing with our Thanksgiving theme this week, today I wanted to share an easy recipe for Cranberry Pancake Syrup made from your leftover cranberry sauce. This cranberry pancake syrup recipe is made from two simple ingredients; your leftover cranberry sauce and maple syrup.

Walmart challenged me to create a recipe using some of our Thanksgiving leftovers and I immediately thought of this idea that I had for our leftover cranberry sauce.

Brandied Orange & Cranberry Sauce

This was the first year that I made my own cranberry syrup for Thanksgiving and I loved it so much that I wanted to use it as an ingredient in another dish that we could share after the holidays were over. This Brandied Orange & Cranberry Sauce was so heavenly that I knew it would be the perfect accompaniment with a big stack of pancakes.

2 Ingredient Cranberry Pancake Syrup

I couldn’t put this sauce on just any pancakes though, it had to be our family favorite- the Fluffy & Light Pumpkin Pancakes that we share (almost) weekly on Sundays in the autumn months.

When the pumpkin and cranberry are combined together, it is like experiencing Thanksgiving Day all over again! I hope you can give these a try with your own leftover cranberry sauce. I promise, it is a recipe that will not disappoint!

Knitted Leaf Centerpiece

Monday, October 28th, 2013

Knitted Leaf Centerpiece from MomAdvice.com.

I have been thinking about creating a knitted leaf centerpiece for so long and I can’t wait to show off my knitted leaf centerpiece that you can create to adorn your Thanksgiving table or as a fun addition to your holiday decorations. This thrifty knitted leaf centerpiece takes less time than you might think and is so much fun to knit up.

I am teaming up with Walmart for this fun project and being a DIY blogger for them is truly one of my favorite jobs. Over the years I have working with them, their knitting & crochet section of their store has grown significantly and they now offer every color in the rainbow for yarn and fun notions to organize and tackle all of your knitting & crochet projects.

Walmart Yarn Display From the knitting/crochet accessories section, you will need size 5 straight needles. If you want to vary the sizes though of your leaves, you can select anything between 2-5 to play around with different sizes. This might be fun especially if knitting the leaves in just one color.

Knitted Leaf Centerpiece from MomAdvice.com.

For this project, you can select any yarn except the super bulky yarns to work with. After working with several different types of yarn I would highly recommend the Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in either solid or patterned finishes for this project or the Red Heart Soft Yarn for a soft & smooth finish on your leaves. Of course, this project is also a fantastic little stash buster and a great way to use up those odds & ends from other projects too.

Knitted Leaf Centerpiece from MomAdvice.com.

Knitted_Leaves-4

I gathered some branches from our backyard for the branches of this centerpiece and then would knit and add a leaf to the branches as I went along until I felt the entire piece was full enough. You could make this piece smaller or larger depending on your own centerpiece needs. Each leaf was secured to the branches using a small scrap of yarn and double knotting it to the ends of each of the branches. I then trimmed the edges with a pair of scissors.

No need to knit the leaf stick on these, a huge time-saver when creating this many leaves, just leave them as they are without the leaf stick attachment.

The vase I already owned, but you could certainly buy a new vase for your centerpiece or repurpose a tall glass jar from your cupboard. I found this vase when pulling together my tips and tablescape last year for setting the perfect Thanksgiving table!

Knitted Leaf Centerpiece from MomAdvice.com.

I have fallen so in love with this centerpiece that I doubt I will ever put it away. As we await Thanksgiving, it has been a nice addition to my new-to-me stained & painted thrift store table I worked on last month.

Want to make a Knitted Thanksgiving Centerpiece of your own? Grab this FREE knitted leaf pattern from Natural Suburbia. Oh, and let’s be friends on Ravelry! It’s where I get all my best knitting ideas!

7 New DIY Halloween Costumes

7 New DIY Halloween Costumes from MomAdvice.com

Halloween is just around the corner and today I wanted to showcase even more DIY Halloween Costume Ideas that you can create using commonly found items at your local second-hand store.

Last year I compiled a really great list of Easy DIY Halloween Costumes that were truly a hit with our readers.

Luckily, I was able to find seven more DIY Halloween costumes that I think would be easy to pull off and oh-so-affordable!

DIY Minion Costumes

One of the biggest movies this summer was Despicable Me 2.

Often costumes from our favorite movie characters are expensive, but I found this easy DIY Minion Costume on make and takes that would be perfect for your own little minion.

The best part is that you only need to find a yellow hat and the other supplies are commonly found in your home or inexpensive to purchase (pipe cleaners, toilet paper roll, scissors, stapler, elastic, and a little paint).

This costume wins for both ease of creation and for being wallet-friendly too!

Rosie the Riveter

What could be more recognizable than the, “We Can Do It!” campaign?
I love this costume because you can create the headpiece with an old red t-shirt that you decorate with a little paint.
The rest of the outfit can most likely be pieced together with items you already have in your closet and with a simple flex of your muscle, you are ready to go!
Check out Crafted in Carhartt for several great DIY ideas including the Rosie the Riveter costume.

Holly Golightly Costume

One of my favorite movies of all-time is, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
I love this Holly Golightly costume that you could piece together with items you found at your store along with items you probably have tucked away in your closet.
With a simple little black dress, some costume jewelry, a pair of sunglasses, and some black gloves you have the makings for a perfectly classy Halloween costume.
This is a great costume for yourself or for an adorable little girly-girl in your life!

Sun-Maid Raisin Girl

I am sure it comes as no surprise that I am a huge fan of good old-fashioned costumes and this Sun-Maid Raisin Girl costume is about as cute as they come!
Add a little ric rac to a white Goodwill t-shirt and pick up a basket from the Housewares department.
Fill it with real (or fake) raisins and grapes for the big night and hit your local Halloween party supply store for a bonnet.
Head on over to wip to get the scoop on this great costume idea full!

 Mona Lisa

You don’t have to have spend a lot to pull off a great costume and that is why I absolutely love this Mona Lisa costume for its simplicity and ease in creation.

Head to Goodwill to get a frame and then use the printable that is provided in the MAKE instructions to create the background.
Dress your child up in a a dress and they will be ready to wow everyone with this costume that is truly a work of art!

Lumberjack

Boy costumes can be tough around here and this DIY Lumberjack costume is one of my new favorite boy costumes.
Grab a knitted hat and flannel shirt and whip up one of these cute little felt beards to go with the costume.
Bonus points should be given if you have time to make an ax out of cardboard!
Visit The Gold Jellybean for this awesome costume tutorial!

LEGO Indiana Jones Costume

My son is LEGO obsessed and that is why I love this fun LEGO Indiana Jones costume for Halloween.
Although creating the LEGO head is a bit of work, what little boy wouldn’t love creating this with you or their Dad?
Pair this costume with a pair of brown pants and shirt!

I hope these ideas inspire you this year! Here is a flashback costume that I created for myself two years ago! Yes, even I love to dress up for the season!

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Halloween is just around the corner and today I want to showcase eight easy DIY Halloween Costumes you can create using items found at your local thrift store. This list of easy DIY Halloween Costumes will hopefully help you gather some great ideas for throwing together a great costume and save you money in the process, thanks to being able to find many of these items at your local thrift store.

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Baby Aerobics Instructor Costume

Holy cuteness! This easy baby aerobics instructor outfit looks like an easy DIY to put together and I promise, it will be a memorable costume. Create a baby headband from a thrift store t-shirt, cut the bottoms off of a pair of socks to create baby leggings, and use your baby’s onsie and leggings to complete the look. This mom created an adorable boombox out of felt to complete the look.  (via Homemade By Jill)

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Book Fairy Costume

A couple of hardback books from your local thrift shop can be transformed into a unique and adorable book fairy costume. Using a hot glue gun, book pages, and the covers of the books to create your fairy wings you can create an entire costume from simply rolling paper for an adorable skirt! You will love this one (via Lilliedale)

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Paper Doll Costume

Short on funds for Halloween costumes this year? This paper doll costume can be created using the free template provided, poster board, and a little foam core. Add your daughter’s laciest socks and a pair of Mary Jane and you have a real-life paper doll to trick-or-treat with. What little girl wouldn’t love that?  (via Family Fun)

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Mary Poppins & Bert Couple Costume

Couple costumes can be challenging, but with few things from your closet and a little help from the local thrift shop, it can be easy to create your look for less. My husband & I created this costume for less than $20 and had an absolute blast putting it together.

I think my favorite accessory that I am wearing is my husband’s bow tie from a prom we attended together. I found it in a box of mementos from our high school days and it was a fun memory to wear at the annual Halloween costume party. (via MomAdvice)

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Homemade Redbox Costume

I had to laugh at this adorable Redbox costume that this family created! The Redbox costume was created using spray paint, a box, and snagging some of the Redbox images from Google. I absolutely love this idea and it cost the family less than $5 to create. The best part is that the whole family can jump in on the creating.  (Coolest Homemade Costumes)

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Baby Cabbage Patch Doll

Looking for a costume that can work around pushing your baby in a stroller? This Cabbage Patch Doll costume is simply genius and wouldn’t cost a lot to create. Head to your local thrift shop to grab a green fitted sheet to cover your stroller, create the Cabbage Patch box, and then cover your baby in yarn pigtails. (Via Costume Works)

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Will Work 4 Candy Costume

The best part about the, “Will Work 4 Candy Costume,” is that you need not buy any supplies at all to create this look. Paint a beard on your child’s face, dress them in their most tired looking play clothes, mismatch their shoes,  and add a cardboard sign from your recycle bin. (via Coolest Homemade Costumes)

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Child’s Superman Costume

Leading a double life can be tough, but it doesn’t need to be expensive. Head to your local thrift store to pick up a tie, shirt, and heavy glasses for Clark Kent, and dress him in a Superman shirt underneath. This costume is adorable and affordable! (Via Think Geek)

Chocolate Snickerdoodle Cake

Tuesday, July 9th, 2013

Chocolate Snickerdoodle CakeIf there is one flavor we love around here it is snickerdoodle. Today I wanted to share an easy recipe for a chocolate snickerdoodle cake that you will flip for. This chocolate snickerdoodle cake is coated in a delicious chocolate cream cheese frosting and adorned in a dusting of dark chocolate candy that adds that perfect finishing touch.

Chocolate Snickerdoodle CakeThis week we celebrated my son’s 11th birthday. In lieu of an elaborate themed dinner and event, he had a sleepover with his best friend and we invited our family over for this cake and for a red, white, & blue trifle to celebrate.

I am the worst cake decorator known to man and produce some of the ugliest, most lopsided, and crumbiest looking cakes ever. I finally found the trick for me was to buy two 8″ Wilton pans (affiliate)  (instead of those 9″ pans that produced flat layers for me) and a good spatula (affiliate). This cake was put together in an hour and the prettiest cake I’ve ever made (if I do say so myself!). It is amazing what a little investment in tools can produce.

Chocolate Snickerdoodle CakeAs is tradition, the birthday kid gets to pick their cake from my cookbooks every year. When Ethan selected this cake, I just knew it would be a hit. This cake is moist, rich, and laced in cinnamon. What makes the cake really taste delightful though is the light cream cheese frosting that it is coated in.

  • 3/4 cup skim milk
  • 3/4 cup canola oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For frosting: 1 package low-fat cream cheese (8 ounces), at room temperature

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups confectioners’s sugar
  • Dark chocolate candy bar for grating on top (optional)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease two 8″ pans and set aside.
  2. Place the cake mix, oil, eggs, cinnamon, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl and blend for three minutes, or until well-blended.
  3. Pour evenly into two pans, smoothing with spatula.
  4. Bake for 28-32 minutes or until the cake springs back when lightly pressed with your finger. Remove and allow to cool for ten minutes. Remove from pans & then cool for another 30 minutes.
  5. Place the cream cheese & butter in a mix bowl. Blend until combined. Add sifted cocoa powder, cinnamon, and confectioners sugar, and finally vanilla. Blend until combined and icing looks fluffy. Add an additional 1/4-1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar if needed.
  6. Ice cake and dust with dark chocolate candy bar shavings to finish.

Summer Party Fun: How to Host a S’more Toppings Bar Party

How to Host a S'more Toppings Bar Party from MomAdvice.com.

If there is one thing we love about summer, it is our s’mores. Today I wanted to showcase a s’more toppings bar that you can create for a summer party and share some unexpected s’more flavor combinations you can try on your s’more toppings bar.

Walmart challenged me to create a summer party that anyone could replicate with just $25 in supplies. I wanted to host an evening for my girlfriends with a s’more toppings bar.

I love that this idea is easy, requires no cooking, and you can even encourage each of your friends to bring their own favorite topping or a drink to share. I displayed my toppings in inexpensive ice cream bowls that you can find over in the seasonal section of the store for a buck each!

It was such a fun night and everyone walked away with a new favorite s’more combination.  If you have a load of toppings, you can write titles next to them or give your guests a helpful cheat sheet of suggestions to put together after roasting their marshmallows. Kraft paper can be found over in the shipping & home office supplies section of the store along with Sharpie pens for writing your own cheat sheet of notes.

My dear friend graciously stepped up to the plate to host the evening and allowed me to setup my s’more topping bar at her house.

How awesome is this setup? I know, SO awesome!

I am so thankful for great friends, great times, and great food! I hope this inspires you for a get together with your own friends this summer or even a fun birthday party idea in the summer months!

This s’mores party was such a hit and I can’t wait to do it again and to do something this fantastic for less than $25? Absolutely priceless!

4th of July Flag Cupcake Pick Wreath & Easy Flag Bunting

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

4th of July Cupcake Pick Wreath from MomAdvice.com.

4th of July happens to be one of my favorite decorating seasons and today I want to show you how to make an easy 4th of July wreath from flag cupcake picks.

This 4th of July wreath idea and easy flag bunting were inspired by a picture from a magazine that I found.

Good Housekeeping Magazine

This picture from Good Housekeeping magazine caught my eye and I knew I wanted to decorate my front door just like it.

Unfortunately, there were no directions on how to create this wreath, what supplies to buy, or how to execute this project.

When Walmart challenged me to come up with a 4th of July project for their customers, I just knew that I had to recreate this door.

My husband said I couldn’t do it.

His doubt fueled this wreath into its amazing flag glory…even when a little voice in my head wasn’t too sure it would look like the picture. If I can make a wreath out of yarn, out of coffee filters, out of Peeps for goodness sake, how could I fail at  a simple cupcake pick wreath?

If you are not crafty this is the project for you.

It requires no sewing, gluing, cutting, or any other crafty-type behavior.

I think that is why I am most excited about it because it is just so easy to do!

Let’s get started with what you need to tackle this fun patriotic project!

Easy 4th of July Wreath - MomAdvice

4th of July Cupcake Pick Wreath from MomAdvice.com. 4th of July Cupcake Pick Wreath from MomAdvice.com. 4th of July Cupcake Pick Wreath from MomAdvice.com. 4th of July Cupcake Pick Wreath from MomAdvice.com.

Supplies List

Above are some pictures of the supplies you will need (for visual learners, like myself!) Prices listed are what they are listed at currently at the store!

  • 1- 16″ foam wreath form (that is flat on the back)- $6.99
  • 6 packages of 120 count flag cupcake picks (Note: These are NOT available at Walmart stores. You can find these, however, at your local party supply store)- $2.99 per box (approximately)
  • Jute Rope- $3.24
  • 12- 4×6 US Flags (found on the ends of the aisles in the office supplies)- $.68 each
  • 2- 20 count packages of mini clothespins (over in the office supplies)- $2.48 each

4th of July Cupcake Pick Wreath from MomAdvice.com.

  1. Take your flag cupcakes and insert them on a slight angle into your foam wreath form. These will not slide in and out easily so you will have to put a little oomph behind it.
  2. Continue filling them in, around and around until you can no longer see your wreath form peeking through. About a box of the flag cupcake picks (120 of them) filled one quarter of my wreath.
  3. Once the front is filled, build up the behind it, but with a thinner layer, just to camouflage the back of the wreath a bit. Make sure not to stack these too deep so that the wreath can still lay flush against your door.
  4. You can fill in the center of the wreath as well with flags, again adding a thinner layer just to hide any of your wreath form, until all you can see is a sea of little flags. It took 720 flags to fill this wreath form. Yes, your fingers will hurt, but you will be so happy about your wreath, you will forget all about the pain!

Easy Flag Bunting from MomAdvice.com.

Now that you have your wreath done, we can create our adorable flag bunting to go around the outside of your door, to frame your wreath!

Easy Flag Bunting from MomAdvice.com.

  1. Disassemble your flags from their mini poles. These are stapled on so I just pulled them off, or you can use a staple remover to remove the staples from the flags.
  2. Take two mini clothespins and clip the flags to the jute twine, spacing them evenly, until all twelve have been attached.
  3. Leaving a little bit of length, clip the end of the twine to finish your bunting.

Easy Flag Bunting from MomAdvice.com. This easy bunting could be added to a doorway, dress up a mantle, to frame out your patio doors, or to decorate a ledge for the holiday. I love that it is so sweet and so simple to create.

4th of July Cupcake Pick Wreath from MomAdvice.com.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of my door and the door I spotted in the magazine.

I am so proud how this turned out and I love that these decorations can be used year after year for the holiday!

I look forward to sharing more fun patriotic projects in the next few weeks with you!

I hope you enjoyed today’s easy 4th of July craft projects!

Cool DIY Father’s Day Gifts

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

Cool-DIY-Father's-Day-Gifts

Father’s Day is only a couple weeks away and whether celebrating my awesome Dad or my husband who is an incredible dad to our kids, I think it’s so meaningful to give handmade gifts, especially if they can be made by kids – or at least with their help. Those seem to be the gifts that are saved and cherished through the years (though hopefully any edible parts of the gift won’t be saved for years!).

Like I did for Mother’s Day (turnabout is fair play!), I’ve combed the Mom Advice archives to bring you some fun and easy gifts for dad that don’t take a lot of money or time and I’m also including two new projects from this year because, well, I love them!

To round out our list of gift ideas, I found a few more sweet and memorable projects from other creative bloggers that you might want to make – just please be sure to pin from the original source I’ve provided if you’d like to add one to a Pinterest board. Thanks!
