Knitted Wine Bottle Hat and Scarf

Knitted Wine Bottle Hat and Scarf from MomAdvice.com

I love sharing ideas for cute hostess gifts and today’s gift idea is a free pattern for a wine hat and scarf that you can use to adorn bottles of wine or champagne for your favorite hostess over the holiday season.

Walmart challenged me to create a New Year’s Eve craft and I immediately thought of a fun way to decorate a bottle of bubbly or wine for the holidays. I love this project so much because these are so fun to create and can be decorated in any combination of yarn colors and you can even experiment with stitches and hat toppers.

You may recall that I made knitted sweater coffee cozies for our teacher & bus driver gifts this year? I used the Red Heart Super Savers yarn and I still had some left despite wrapping all my holiday gifts in the yarn, knitting hair bows for gifts (coming soon!) and even making my yarn ball ornaments. I can’t believe how many projects you can create with just $2.47 of yarn!

I wanted to create a festive gift I could share with others when I attend our holiday gatherings this year. What is more festive than tiny hats and scarves for your wine bottles?

Modifications Were Made to The Featured Pattern. Please Read Carefully!

I tried a few different needle sizes since the pattern said you could use a few different sizes, I recommend going with the largest size (US 8) recommended because it created the fullest scarf (the red one in the back was done on US 8 needles). There were also some interesting stitches in the pattern for the scarf and I tried it three different ways (recommended, my own way, and then a simple stockinette). I loved just simply doing a simple stockinette (knit one row, purl one row- repeating) with the US 8 needles. The scarf will curl in a bit, but I think it added more texture to the top of the bottle. You can, of course, experiment with what you think looks best though.

These tiny hats are knitted on double-pointed needles. If you haven’t tried using double-pointed needles before, this is a perfect project to try them on. You can find a few tips from me over here on needle recommendations and getting started! Don’t be scared, it is easier than you think!

I know I keep talking about my pom-pom makers, but they seriously have made me so happy this year. I bought them when we made pom-pom bouquets for our grandma (you can read my tutorial on how to use them there)  and then I completed a pom-pom marathon when I made my DIY Pom Pom Trees. I used the smallest Clover Pom-Pom maker for these tiny hats.

While you are buying it, you might as well as buy the larger size because you will be just as addicted to me as pom-pom making!

January MomAdvice Book Club Selection: The Paris Architect (GIVEAWAY!)

Friday, December 13th, 2013

I am so excited to be getting our first book club selection off the ground and have chosen, “The Paris Architect,” by Charles Belfoure as this month’s selection.

You know when you read a book and you can’t stop talking about it? That book was this book for me this month. The story is set in 1942 in Paris and tells the story of a gifted architect named Lucien Bernard. In a time of true economic strife and rations in the city, Lucien is commissioned to design secret hiding places in homes to hide wealthy Jews to prevent them from being taken by the Nazis. Although, Lucien is no way supportive of assisting the Jews, he is very hungry for money and if he can design these spaces, he is also given other jobs that can help him continue leading a rather comfortable life.

The problem is… by assisting the Jewish people he is risking his own life. The other problem is… what if he actually starts to care?

This book will be graphic in nature. There is violence, language, and sexuality. This will not be an easy topic. This is a book you will want to talk about. This will be a book you will remember.

Charles Belfoure

Charles Belfoure is a debut novelist and is an architect by profession, which is why this book is so beautiful in detail and thought. He runs his own blog called The Wicked Architect. I know you will want to become a fan after you read this one!

Charles has graciously offered two of our readers the chance to win his book. He has also offered to answer your questions, which I could not be more excited about!

To enter to win a copy of, “The Paris Architect,” please enter via the Rafflecopter widget below!

MomAdvice Book Club

Our book club discussion for this novel will take place on January 28th. I will try to collect your questions for the author before that though via our Facebook group! Sign up for our newsletter to stay informed and connect with me on GoodReads too!

Welcome to the MomAdvice Book Club

MomAdvice Book Club

I’m so excited to be launching the much-anticipated (for me, anyway!) MomAdvice Book Club for our readers. This has been something that we have been talking about through our Facebook community as an opportunity to bring my favorite readers together with great book selections that we can share about and discuss.

Here is what you need to know about this book club!

There Will Be Monthly Selections

Each month I will select a book that we can read together starting this January. I will do my best to give you one month’s advance notice of the next selection to give you plenty of time to purchase, borrow, or download the monthly selection. If I am at all able to get books for you or give them away, I promise to do that.

This Won’t Be Your Average Book Club

For the most part, I am going to try to stay off the path of those bestselling books that have already been heard of and have probably already been read by you. My hope is to highlight those hidden gems of books that you may not have heard of before and embrace debut novelists. The purpose in this is really twofold. By selecting a novel that a first-time novelist is trying to promote or finding books you may not have heard of before, I am hoping that many of these authors will more willing to collaborate with us by providing books and/or participating in a book club discussion with our readers. The second reason is, I truly love finding these types of books to share with you and as an author myself, appreciate promoting someone who is just beginning their career!

I will always read the selection before selecting it because I really want to be assured that I am not wasting your precious reading time. I will be honest with you about the topic-matter. There will be tough books and there will be light books. I will be honest if I feel a novel is graphic in nature, but I will not censor books from making the cut if there are scenes in it like that. I want to pick books that I believe will stick with you and sometimes those scenes will be in there (as they are in this month’s selection). If it isn’t your cup of tea, you can always avoid those types of books.

You Can Always Connect With Me on GoodReads

If your goal is to read more books this year, I highly recommend joining the GoodReads community. I use the app and site daily when deciding what books to read and finding new books to add to my to-be-read pile! You can find me over here and thanks to my author profile, you can also find my blog and stay up to date with what is happening with the site!

When & How Will We Discuss the Books?

The announcement for the books will be made by or before the first of the month. Once the selection has been made, you will have (at least) three weeks to read it. The book discussions will be on the last Tuesday of every month. One week before, should we have an author participating in a discussion, we will ask for reader questions to submit to them. The timeline is tentatively based on if that author can return the questions in that time frame. It is best to join our Facebook community and our newsletter list (new newsletter coming soon!!) to stay up to date on what is happening! Be sure if you sign up for our newsletter that you check your email box for the confirmation link to click through to make sure you are signed up!  Following the conclusion of the discussion, the next book will be announced so you can get your selection.

We will try different ways of meeting up (please leave a comment below if you have a preference). Some questions may be asked on our Facebook page, we might try a Google hangout, or perhaps some other avenues of virtual meet-ups. For this first one, we will keep it simple here on the blog!

Baked-Salmon-Cakes-with-Avocado-Dip

I love batch cooking, and this recipe for baking salmon cake appetizers for a party is just genius!

I think making a bird seed cake with our kids for our little feathered friends might just become a new post-holiday tradition.

As if Thai coconut chicken soup didn’t sound wonderful enough on a cold winter’s night, being able to cook it in the slow cooker is even better!

Here’s a fringed burlap Christmas tree tutorial that’s as easy as it is adorable.

Since you all know how I feel about reading, you’re probably not surprised that I’m crushing on a few of these amazing christmas trees made from books!

Finally, I’m absolutely inspired by these great tips for families on celebrating St. Nicholas – the real Santa Claus.

DIY Slippers With Interchangeable Fabric Flowers

Monday, December 9th, 2013

DIY Slippers With Interchangeable Fabric Flowers from MomAdvice.com.

Continuing with our theme of handmade gifts, I wanted to share this easy DIY for glamming up a pair of slippers for the holidays with some easy interchangeable fabric flowers that I created to dress-up a pair of slippers.

DIY Slippers With Interchangeable Fabric Flowers from MomAdvice.com.

Supplies List

Slippers

Large Circle Punch or Cup/Jar that you can trace to create your circles

Fabric Quarters or Scrap Fabric

1 Piece of Felt

Decorative Buttons

Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks

3/4″ Circle Heavy-Duty Magnets OR you can use Velcro circle dots (reinforced with hot glue)

DIY Slippers With Interchangeable Fabric Flowers from MomAdvice.com.

Directions:

1. Begin by cutting out nine circles of your fabric for each flower. For a pair of shoes, you will need eighteen of these circles in total.  I used a large circle punch and created my template out of scrap card stock, but you could also trace a cup to create your own template.

2. Next cut out two smaller circles of felt. I just freehanded these. You will be using these as the base of your fabric flowers.

3. For these fabric flowers, we are going to make the flower more flat than we did in my flower clips that I have a tutorial for, so they will lay nice and flat on your slippers. Begin by folding your circle in half and then half again. Add a dab of glue on the bottom and secure it to your flower. Repeat this process three more times and it will fill the base of the flower.

4. Add another layer on top of the flower, folding them as I shared above, and weaving them between the layers of the flower until it is full. If you like the look of it with just eight petals, that is okay too. You just want to make sure that the flower is filled out entirely.

5. Add a dab of glue to your button and secure it to the top of the flower. Repeat all of these steps again to make the second one for the second shoe.

DIY Slippers With Interchangeable Fabric Flowers from MomAdvice.com.

6. You can secure your fabric flowers directly on to your slippers (suggested if you are committed to your flowers), or you can add a magnet OR Velcro dots (in the sewing supplies of your craft shop) to the top of these and then secure a magnet/Velcro dot to the back of the flowers to make these interchangeable.

If making an interchangeable set with magnets, be sure to test your magnets to make sure they are attracting and select heavy-duty magnets that will really hold these flowers to your slippers.

I absolutely love these slippers and loved them so much I may have kept them for myself and now have to run out and get supplies to make more of them!

All Knitted Up: Snowflake Scarf from Purl Soho

Snowflake Scarf from Purl Soho

Looking for a fast and easy knit that you can mindlessly do while watching television? This easy Snowflake Scarf pattern is just the pattern for you for your holiday gift-giving this year! You won’t believe how quickly this pattern knits up!

I know that I have been getting lots of comments and emails lately about sharing my knitted gifts. I hope you spied my adorable coffee cup sweaters I knitted up for our teachers and the super cute yarn ball ornaments I made for some additional gifts this year.

Snowflake Scarf from Purl Soho Snowflake Scarf from Purl Soho Snowflake Scarf from Purl Soho

Snowflake Scarf Pattern

Pattern: Snowflake Scarf from Purl Soho (FREE!)

Needle Size: US 15″ straight needles (affiliate)

Yarn: Yarn Bee Andes Alpaca in Fog (found at Hobby Lobby). You only need three skeins (read below).

Notes: I am absolutely in love with this stitch pattern and this scarf that I knitted up for a holiday gift. There are only four rows and two of them are just knit rows, making this the easiest pattern to memorize and mindlessly knit while watching your favorite holiday shows.

I bought four skeins of the yarn, as was recommended in the pattern, but I think that adding another skein would have added a lot of unnecessary weight to this one and the three skeins created a perfect length on this scarf. It is warm, but not smothering you in layers of scarf!

I can’t recommend this pattern enough and can’t wait to make a few more for the holiday season for gifts.

I am having a VERY hard time passing this scarf on. It really is the perfect scarf. I am thankful this is an easy one to knit though so I can head right over to get more yarn and make another one for myself!

Happy knitting, friends!

Yarn Ball Ornaments

Easy Yarn Ball Ornaments from MomAdvice.com

Looking for a creative gift to craft up that requires zero crafting skills and can be made in under 15 minutes. These yarn ball ornaments are the perfect gift to give for the holidays and are unbelievably easy to create for the holiday season. The best part is that it is a gift perfect for knitters, but doesn’t require knitting! If you are a knitter, like me, it is a fantastic stash-buster of a project!

Target Yarn Ball Ornament

The inspiration for this craft came from this picture of an ornament at Target that my girlfriend sent to me. I loved the idea of this ornament, but wanted to create something a little more authentic for my knitting friends. After a few trips to the craft store and some test ornaments, I am sharing with you how you can make these cute ornaments for someone you love!

Easy Yarn Ball Ornaments from MomAdvice.com

Supplies List

1 package of 2 1/2″ Styrofoam balls

Wooden Skewers

1 package 3/8″ Round Wooden Beads

Craft Glue

Glue Sticks & Glue Gun

Wire Cutters

Ruler

Scissors

Scrap Yarn

Easy Yarn Ball Ornaments from MomAdvice.com

Directions

1. Grab two wooden skewers and measure them to 5 inches. Using your wire cutters, clamp down and break off the top end of the skewer to create the knitting needles.

2. Dab a little craft glue on the end of the skewer and top it with the wooden bead. Make sure the top of the bead lines up with the top hole so that you no longer see it. Repeat with the other skewer and set these aside to dry.

3. Add a dab of hot glue to your Styrofoam ball and start wrapping it with yarn. Keep wrapping around and around until the yarn ball is completely covered. Add one more dab of hot glue and secure the end of the yarn to the ball. Trim to keep it flush with the ball and set aside to dry.

4. Grab your wooden knitting needles and cross them through the front of the yarn ball.

5. Trim another strand of yarn and, using an embroidery needle, loop the yarn through the top of the yarn ball. Knot it, and then slide the knot into the opposite side of the ball, tucking your knot in so it is no longer visible.
