How to Dye Canvas Shoes from MomAdvice.com

*This post is sponsored by Walmart. Thank you for supporting the companies that support this site!

Many years ago I shared a post for how to dye a faded pair of jeans back to their original color with Rit dye and it remains one of our top ten articles STILL. I am such a fan of fabric dying and in honor of the back-to-school season, we wanted to show you a way that you can customize your style (or match your uniforms!) for your first day of school. This can also be a fun way to customize your gym shoes.

Not only can your child show off their own personal style, but it can also be a fantastic craft activity to do together before your kids head back to school.

This craft takes about an hour and requires parental supervision!

Supplies Needed

Rit Liquid Dye (we used Royal Blue)

Faded Glory Canvas Shoes (only $5.87- what a steal!)

Band-Aid Waterproof Tape (over by the first aid supplies in the pharmacy section)

Rubber Gloves

Salt

Stainless Steel Pot & Tongs

Directions

1. Begin by removing the laces from your shoes. You can dye these in the dye bath with the shoes if you prefer to have them the same color, or you can set them aside like we did until your shoes are dyed and dry. We loved the contrast of those white laces!

2. Cover the plastic edge on your shoe in your waterproof tape. Make sure that it is tight and secure to the edge of your shoe or it will come loose in your dye bath. This tape barrier will keep the edges of your shoe nice and bright just like those laces we set aside.

3.  Fill pot with enough hot water for fabric to move freely. We used a 1/2 bottle of Rit liquid dye and 3 gallons of hot water for our shoes. Stir to mix.

4. Wet your shoes in hot water well in your sink before placing them in the water bath with your tongs.

5. Bring dye bath to simmer. Stir constantly (back and forth, up and down). The length of time depends on how dark you want them. We were able to achieve this vibrant hue in just a short ten minutes. We didn’t want them a consistent color, but that pretty weathered look we love. If you want them to be an even color or are trying to achieve a dark color (like black), you can leave them in for 30 minutes up until an hour.

6. Rinse in warm water, then gradually cooler water until water runs clear.  Remove tape from the shoes to expose the edge. Wash item in warm water with mild detergent and rinse by hand or in the washing machine. I did an express wash and threw in an old towel with these. Clean washing machine using highest water level with hot water, detergent and 1 cup chlorine bleach using a complete wash cycle (I rewashed the old towel).  You can read more about dying in your washer (both HE and top-loading machines) here with detailed instructions from start to finish.

7. Dry shoes in the sunshine and then lace your laces back in to finish. Struggling with tying? Try this super awesome tutorial for a new way to tie your shoes!  Wouldn’t these be a sweet treat to give your kiddo after they master it? My kids learned in about five minutes!

The Domestic Diva Shares: What’s in Your Makeup Bag?

Five Must-Haves for Your Makeup Bag

I’m so excited to have Heather joining us from The Domestic Diva today! We have worked together for many years on the Walmart Moms program and she is one of my go-to girls when it comes to beauty and make-up! I hope you enjoy these fantastic recommendations from her today! xo

Hi, my name is Heather and I blog at the beauty & lifestyle blog, The Domestic Diva. I love checking out the latest affordable products at the drugstore and believe that you don’t have to spend a fortune to achieve flawless makeup results at home.

Whether I’m rocking the “no makeup” makeup look or full on glam there are a five must-have products and tools that I use in my makeup bag every time I apply my makeup:

1. Eyeshadow Palette

There are many different formulas of eye shadows from mattes to shimmers. I tend to stick to mostly matte shadows because they are the most forgiving. But when it comes to shopping for eyeshadows, the problem I have is not only do purchasing individual eye shadow colors add up quickly but it can also be a little difficult to find pigmented matte shadows at the drugstore. However, we are beginning to see more and more eyeshadow palettes at the drugstore so when looking for an eyeshadow palette try to find one that has a mix of both mattes and shimmers. An example of this would be the Maybelline The Nudes palette or the Maybelline Blushed Nudes palette at the drugstore.

I think, however, the best part of having an eyeshadow palette in your makeup bag, instead of individual eye shadows, is that it is easy to create a variety of different eyeshadow looks based on which shadows you use from the palette. If you are one that likes to experiment with your look, I would recommend a larger palette. Coastal Scents and BH Cosmetics, while only available online, both have large eye shadow palettes full of highly-pigmented shadows yet still remains budget-friendly. When choosing an eyeshadow palette choose one that is either completely matte or has a good mix of mattes and shimmering shades in colors that compliment your skin tone.

Eye shadow using primer and without

2. Eyeshadow Primer

I can not and will not apply eyeshadow to my eyes without first applying a primer. My personal favorite is the L’oreal De-crease Eye Shadow Base that can easily be found at just about any drugstore. An eyeshadow primer, also known as a base, gives your shadows something to stick and hold on to. You’ll notice when using an eyeshadow primer or base versus not using one that your eye shadows will look more vibrant and that they will last longer throughout the day.

Setting spray

3. Setting Spray

Living in a climate with very high humidity, one step outside and my makeup wants to just melt or sweat off of my face especially in the summer months. I’ve found that setting my finished makeup look with a setting spray helps my makeup last longer through my day. The great news is that a product that was once only sold in higher-end stores is now easily available at the drugstore. After applying your makeup, lightly mist your entire face with a setting spray, like the L’oreal Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray, allow it to dry completely before you blink your eyes or move about to set your makeup in place.

Powder foundation

4. Powder Foundation

Every one has flaws. Whether it’s an unexpected blemish or a dark spot you want to conceal, trying to hide those imperfections can be a bit challenging. Using a cream based product to conceal can often end up looking cakey. I’ve found that I get better results when I use a powder foundation, like L’oreal True Match Mineral Foundation, to conceal. I apply my liquid foundation as normal and any imperfections that needs additional coverage, like a blemish, I will use a fluffy eyeshadow brush dipped in a powder foundation to buff over those areas before setting it with a translucent powder. The reason why this works is because powder foundations are typically formulated for medium-full coverage. The key, however, is to make sure that the powder foundation matches your skin tone so when you buff the powder foundation on the area you want to conceal, it will blend in seamlessly.

Makeup brushes

5. Makeup Brushes

Having a great set of makeup brushes can make a world of difference in the way that your makeup looks when applied to the skin. Let’s face it, the applicators that come with makeup products when purchased don’t really work all that great. I recommend two sets of brushes, one for your face and a separate set for those that like to play up their eyes. One can purchase brushes individually or as a set, which I prefer. Brushes can also be found in the drugstore, like Real Techniques or Ecotools, or online, at Coastal Scents or BH Cosmetics.

For the face you want to have at least a large powder brush, a blush brush, and perhaps a contour brush if you like to contour. For the eyes the brushes you want to look for is a large fluffy eyeshadow brush for applying shadow all over the entire lid, a blending brush for your crease, a smaller eyeshadow brush for packing shimmery shades just on the lid or for applying bolder more intense colors in a concentrated area, and a small smudge brush for smudging eyeliner or applying eyeshadow to your lower lash line.

For applying liquid foundation and liquid concealer, I recommend a dampened beauty blending sponge versus just using your fingers. The budget-friendly Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is said to be a great alternative to the other high-end makeup blending sponge currently on the market.

These are just a few of my favorite products or tools that I keep in my makeup bag. If you would like more makeup tips or would just like to hear my thoughts on the latest, budget-friendly makeup products then please take a minute to visit my blog at thedomesticdiva.org. Also, I would like to give Amy, a wonderful blogging friend whom I’ve admired for years, a big thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about one of my favorite topics with all of you!

DIY At-Home Hair Coloring Savings & Tips

DIY Hair Coloring Savings and Tips

I have been coloring my hair at home for years now, but only in the last few years has it started to become more necessary. I will peek at my hair in the mirror or my hair will catch the light in the sun and I see those wiry gray hairs coming through. Ah, the signs of old age are upon me.

Hair color in the box has come a long way, though, and I have been able to experiment with different brands and products that have come out when I have a coupon to go with them. I have found that I rarely have to pay for the regular price on my hair color.

How to Save on DIY Hair Color

1. Hair color is always on sale. If you look in CVS or the Walgreens flier, you will find that on almost any given week, they are running a special on hair color. Walgreens & CVS often will either give you a rebate on these products or some type of register reward. Wait for the sales on your favorite brands and try to stock up in conjunction with these.

2. Hair color coupons abound. Make sure to check your Sunday coupon inserts for coupons and cut these out to apply towards your purchase. If you can combine those coupons with a rebate/Extra Care Buck reward, you can often get your hair color for less than $5 a box.

3. Sign up for mailing lists. Sign up for the mailing lists for coupons and tips on coloring your hair. Clairol, for example, offers the Color Source Club where they send an email newsletter out with coupon savings towards your purchases and updates on their new products. By visiting the Garnier website, you will find they offer a newsletter with updates on free samples and special offers. Likewise, Revlon offers a website where you can sign up for a similar type of program and be notified of savings and samples.

4. Look inside & outside the box for savings. Often on the directions page, there is a coupon to take off money on your next purchase. Make sure to scan all over the outside and inside of the box for coupons and use these on your next color purchase.

5. Don’t forget savings in unlikely places. One week my hair color was not on sale and I was not stocked on any extra boxes. Our local Bed Bath & Beyond though recently added a beauty section that is fully stocked on all of my drugstore needs. I walked in with a manufacturer coupon and combined that with the 20% off a purchase coupon and was still able to score my favorite hair color for about $5.00. I don’t know if all of the stores offer this, but this is another option for coupon savings.

6. Check eBay for coupons. Coupons abound for the products that you use and it is a great resource for savings on the things you use most. When my children were babies, I often used eBay to get coupons for savings off our baby food. Now that they are getting older, I am now looking for hair color coupons. My, how the circle of life continues!

Hair Coloring Tips

Perfect-10 hair color

I recently happened upon a product though that has had me shouting it’s praises from the mountain tops and I doubt I will use anything else since I have become so spoiled. It is the Clairol Perfect 10 Hair Color.

I had a coupon for this product and since I have used it, I can never picture using anything else ever again. There are two reasons why I love it.

  1. The applicator makes it a lot less messy. I am one of those people that is a constant disaster and I can’t tell you how many things I have ruined while trying to get hair color on my head. It almost became a joke because every time I would color my hair, we would have to buy a new shower curtain because I had slopped color on it.
  2. It is done in ten minutes. That is it. By the time I get it on, it is time to rinse it off. It colors my hair that quickly.

It is not the most frugal choice always, but regularly priced at $12.99, it is still a huge cost-savings over the $50-100 charge that is being charged at most salons. And if you can apply the cost-savings above, you can still get this hair color for the $5-8 price.

Too scared to color your hair at home?

Don’t be! It is really hard to fail at at-home hair coloring unless you are trying to color your hair drastically. If the look is drastic, go to the salon and have them do it, but for just covering a few grays, it can be easy to do at home.

color oops hair colo

But what if you fail or you get a bad color job at the salon?

I have found the best product for you for that too! I once had a botched color job at the salon and I was desperate to tone down my bright hair. I found this great product that you can buy at Walgreens called Color Oops. Within five to ten minutes of putting this on your hair, it will tone down your color. If you leave it on too long though, it will strip your hair down to your baby hair. I would be very careful using a product like this, but desperate times sometimes call for desperate measures and this will work in a pinch.

Your best bet if you get a botched job at the salon? Going back to the salon and asking them to put a little toner on it. They should do this for free for you and guarantee their color services so make sure you ask this before getting your hair done somewhere how long their color-guarantee is.

After Coloring Tips

Don’t forget that no matter where you choose to color you hair, that the most important thing to do to maintain it is to use color-safe shampoos afterward.

The same tips for savings on hair color apply to those hair color shampoos too. It has been a long time since I have paid full price for any hair care items by taking advantage of coupons and savings at the drugstore.

If you are looking for an affordable brand option, Suave corners the market on inexpensive hair products. They have an arsenal of hair products that won’t put a dent in your wallet. For example, Nexxus shampoo costs more than $8 for 14.5 ounces. Suave makes a knock off of this same shampoo for $1.92-2.49 for 14.5 ounces. Combine that with a coupon, and you have practically free shampoo that will keep your hair looking great!

I hope these at-home hair color tips will help keep your lovely locks looking great for a lot less!

Do you color your hair at home? What products do you love? How do you maximize your color savings?

Summer 2015 Fashion Capsule Wardrobe Project

Summer 2015 Fashion Capsule Wardrobe Project from MomAdvice.com

Is it okay to admit that I fell off the fashion capsule wagon for a bit? After our trip to Italy this summer, I lacked the motivation and time to get my wardrobe planning back on track. I can honestly say that I have felt a little out of sorts without the structure. If I thought that this was just a silly routine to get myself to stop shopping, it was evident after an explosion from my closet every morning and the urge to spend again (when I had plenty) that helped me realize how much I benefit from it. Today I am revealing my summer fashion capsule and putting myself back on the wagon.

Since this month is all about beauty in our m challenge, I thought this was the perfect time to reveal my summer wardrobe.  I really do consider my capsule wardrobe a big part of my beauty routine. I have found that simplifying my wardrobe helps me feel beautiful and put together for my week. I can’t recommend this enough and in just a couple of short months, I will have implemented this in my life for an entire year! Who would have thunk it?

Let’s dig into this month’s capsule!

Summer 2015 Fashion Capsule Wardrobe Project from MomAdvice.com

This project was inspired by Project 333 & the Unfancy fashion capsule challenge, but I am making a few of my own rules for my own personal challenge.

33 Piece Wardrobe- The wardrobe can have 33 pieces  in it. This wardrobe does not include pajamas, workout gear, undergarments, or camisoles (something that is a necessity for me).  The capsule is made from items I already own, some purchased to be workhorses in my wardrobe (since I fail in this department greatly), and purchased second hand at thredUP or Twice. All of the items I am not wearing and still love are being tucked in storage for the next fashion capsule.  I have created a Fashion Capsule Pinterest Board to help inspire me with the pieces I am using.

Choose 3 More for Rotating- You may choose three additional items and put them aside in your closet. You may rotate these items in during the next three months, but three other items have to be rotated out. Consider donating those items.

No Shoe Shopping- I am not including my shoes for this challenge, but I am challenging myself to not buy any more shoes and use what I already have.

One Steal Per Month- Things and events come up and I am allowing myself one steal per month from items that I already own. I may find I don’t need this, but I think it might help with the shopping bug.

No Shopping For Clothing- I will wear the clothes I have selected and not shop for three months and only shop two weeks prior to the next capsule for items for the next season if needed. This is going to require a lot of discipline for me and I am planning to unsubscribe to shopping newsletters and avoid the shops as much as possible.

Below is my wardrobe for the month. I am at 32 pieces this month! Since the weather has been wonky in Indiana, I will save one piece for  another jacket (what the hay, Indiana?!). The items with an asterisk are new to this capsule (purchased for our Italy trip!)

Summer Beauty Tips with Hollywood Housewife

Summer Beauty Tips from Hollywood Housewife

I would like to extend a warm welcome to one of my dear blogging friends, Laura from Hollywood Housewife.  If you are looking for great advice for books and beauty, she is my go-to girl! Today Laura is sharing a few of her favorite summer beauty tips for our m challenge and I’m so incredibly honored to share her tips with you today! xo

I am so honored to be posting at Mom Advice today! I’ve long been a fan of what Amy makes of this space, it’s such a good combination of practical and interesting.

Today I want to share with you a little bit about summer beauty routines. On my blog Hollywood Housewife, we talk a lot about lazy beauty. I confess to a certain amount of vanity – I care about the way I look, who doesn’t? – but I don’t want to invest too much time or energy into it. So I focus on finding products that give you a lot of bang for your buck, or are multi-use. The goal is to look (and feel) your best, with the minimum amount of steps required.

In the summer especially, “lazy beauty” is paramount. I don’t want to spend one extra minute in front of a mirror, but it’s also the most social time of the year.

Here are my favorite beauty tips and products for easily looking your best during the warmer months:

Sunscreen & Moisturizer

We should all be wearing sunscreen year ‘round, but of course this is the time of year when your risk of sun damage increases exponentially. I look for SPF in my face products, but beware not to get it too close to your eyes. For daily, no-makeup days, I use Aveeno Positively Radiant daily moisturizer. It evens out my skin tone more than pricier versions, and it really protects your skin. The Positively Radiant moisturizer is available in both SPF 15 and SPF 30. I trekked through Sri Lanka and Haiti wearing only this lotion and was shocked at how well it held up through the hot days.

Summer beauty tips sunscreen moisturizer

For the face

If I’m going to wear a little makeup, I prefer tinted moisturizer in the summer instead of traditional foundation. It doesn’t do the heavy lifting that either a true moisturizer or foundation does, but it’s a great compromise between being bare-faced and being made up. It will give you a subtle glow, and hides imperfections. If I was going to splurge on one single product for my summer routine, it would be a good tinted moisturizer.

Summer beauty tips tinted moisturizers

My favorites are Laura Mercier oil-free tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 and NARS Pure Radiant tinted moisturizer with SPF 30. The Laura Mercier has a bit of a sheen to it, while the NARS finishes on the matte side. The key is not to apply too much. You should use a much lighter hand than you would with regular moisturizer or foundation. I dot just a bit on both cheeks and the forehead, then use a brush to even it out. It’s fine to use your fingers if you’re on the go, or if you want just a little more coverage.

Eyes, Cheeks, & Lips

I don’t have the patience for an involved eye shadow routine in any season, but especially not in the summer. For the most natural look, I don’t use shadow at all, but just swipe a bit of concealer on the eyelids, because mine look slightly blue without it. If I want just a shimmer of something, I use my finger to apply a transparent shadow like Cover Girl Eye Enhancer in champagne or a cream like MAC’s longwear paint pot in chilled ice.

Summer beauty tips eye makeup

Typically when it’s hot, I forego blush altogether. It tends to melt in an unflattering way, and most of us have a pretty natural flush in the summer anyway. If you want to look more sun-kissed, apply a bronzer underneath the cheekbones, and just a touch down the middle of the face, lightly grazing the forehead, nose, and chin. Never apply bronzer all over like you would with regular face powder. Look for the places the sun naturally hits your face, and dust those areas.

Summer beauty tips lip gloss

I’m a big fan of lipstick (and contend that ANYONE can wear red lipstick, no matter their coloring or their personality), but it mostly bleeds when it’s too hot outside. Shiny lip gloss is more forgiving than colors with a lot of pigment, and can look surprisingly festive. For the added benefit of a protecting balm, I like the feel and gloss of Kiehl’s #1, and for a pop of color I like the Lancome Juicy Tubes.

Summer beauty tips mascara

Even if I apply nothing else, I never skip mascara. I look disturbingly like I’m about to fall asleep if I don’t highlight my lashes. I’ve experimented with expensive mascaras and drugstore brands, and I just keep coming back to L’Oreal Voluminous Original mascara. The waterproof version is too bulletproof for me (it’s really hard to get off!), but if that’s what you need near the water, then it does the job. Otherwise, mascara is the best and cheapest way to look instantly awake and polished.

Hair

Chasing my kids around the pool, the last thing I want to worry about is my hair. (Sensing a theme here?) I recently grew my bangs out (again), so I see a lot of messy ponytails in my future this summer. To keep from being really boring with your hair, try an embellished headband (like this one) or a colorful scarf (like this gauzy one). You can also add a sweet detail like a small braid near your hairline.

Summer beauty tips hair accessories

Or just embrace the beachy, messy look! My hair is fine and stringy, so when I’m not in the mood to fuss with a straightening iron, I spritz Bumble & Bumble Surf spray all over, and give my hair a little shake. Voila! Low maintenance is always the best policy.

I hope these few ideas help you find a no-fuss summer beauty routine. You can find all of my lazy beauty posts here. I’m always tweaking the products I use, so if you have any of your own suggestions about looking your best, I’d love to hear them in the comments.

Thanks for letting me share here today!

Easy Summer Beauty Routines from MomAdvice.com

*This post is sponsored by Walmart. Thank you for supporting the companies that support this site!

This upcoming month we will be focusing on Beauty for our m challenge! I am giving you a sneak peek on my beauty routines today as I partner up with Walmart to share about some of their great beauty essentials. In the past I have worked as a craft contributor for their team, but I get to switch gears now and share about beauty & fashion with them this year. I am sure you have seen my obsession for these two things grow as we have talked about fashion capsules (my summer capsule reveal happens next month- stay tuned!) and as we talk about our favorite beauty products in It’s the 3 Little Things each week! This switch feels like a great fit and will give me a chance to try out some new beauty routines to share with you!

Easy Summer Beauty Routines from MomAdvice.com

As you can see, I try to keep things pretty neutral when it comes to beauty since this is my typical make-up job. I don’t know if that will appeal to you or not, but many of the routines I have had in place have worked for me for many years. I use many of the same facial washes and make-up brands that I have used since high school.  For summer beauty, my objectives are really simple- PROTECTION from the sun, WATERPROOF since I tend to be a sweaty mess all the time, and MULTI-USE products since our bathroom doesn’t have a ton of storage space.

Oh, and I’m lazy.

Easy Summer Beauty Routines from MomAdvice.com

Based on these factors, here are my FAVORITE summer beauty products that I truly love!

Easy Summer Beauty Routines from MomAdvice.com

Neutrogena Cooldry Sport Sunscreen SPF 30 all the way up to 70!

We hang out at the pool all summer and my kids are little fishes in the water. We look for sunscreens with staying power and fast application. This Neutrogena Cooldry Sport Sunscreen is fantastic because it is water resistant for up to 80 minutes. The best part is that it dries quickly upon application and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. I am prone to breakouts from sunscreen and this one doesn’t make me break out.  We still stick to cream application and sticks to our faces, but this is a quick one for getting everyone protected and in the pool in no time flat. I priced it out at a lot of places and Walmart really does have the best price (it was $3 cheaper than another superstore in our area). Since we live at the pool, we spend a ton on sunscreen so that savings adds up quick.

Easy Summer Beauty Routines from MomAdvice.com

Aveeno BB Cream

I’ve been experimenting with lots of different BB Creams and I have to say that I love the Aveeno BB Cream the most because it isn’t drying to my skin, the sunscreen has performed really well on my fair complexion, and it seems to offer really great coverage at hiding imperfections in my skin. I had to laugh when I was at an assembly for my daughter and my friend said, “Your skin is so beautiful. I just want to touch it.” After uncontrollable laughing, I told her that THIS is my secret. It’s almost like an airbrush to your face and it keeps my skin feeling soft and smooth. I always had a hard time finding it, but it is usually over in the facial washes/moisturizer aisle and not in the makeup area. It’s my priciest investment ($11.72), but if you compare ounce for ounce on other brands, it really is a bargain. I also save a ton by using an all-in-one product instead of purchasing several bottles.

Burt’s Bees Lip Shine (in Pucker)

In the Fall & Winter months, I love a bold lip with heavy coverage. In the summer though, I just want a little tint to my lips and a lot of shine. I have always been a fan of the Burt’s Bees lip balms, but only recently discovered these lip shines for my summer routines. These smell so good, have good shine, and they do a great job moisturizing the lip. PS- If you haven’t watched the Burt’s Bees documentary on Netflix, you really must. He is such an interesting man and there is much to admire about someone that famous who chooses to live so simply.  You will love it!

Easy Summer Beauty Routines from MomAdvice.com

Revlon Colorstay Eyeliner (in Black Brown)

You will rarely catch me without eyeliner on. I could care less about mascara, but I won’t leave the house without a swipe of eyeliner on my lids. I have tried so many brands and none of them stick except for this one. It says it holds up to sixteen hours…I am going to say it stays longer than most, but sixteen hours is pushing it.  It really stays on the longest of any I have tried though and goes on smoothly. For summer, this is the one I would recommend adding to your make-up routines! Pair this with infallible eye shadow in iced latte and your eyes are set for summer!

TRESemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is EXPENSIVE especially when it comes to the salon brands. As a brunette, it is hard to find a dry shampoo that does not leave me looking like I have a white film on my hair. When this product came out originally, I looked like a mess because the residue was so bad. They switched their formula though and I purchased a trial size to try it out for a trip and it works BEAUTIFULLY now.  In the summer, I often look like I need to wash my hair. I don’t know if you saw THIS or not, but I really hate washing my hair especially now that it has gotten so long. This stuff is a year-round essential, but really perfect after a day at the pool with the kids when I could use a little freshening up and it costs less than $5!

Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs

Ladies, I am the fairest of them all and I am telling you right now to RUN to Walmart and get this stuff. It used to come only in an aerosol can and I have ruined a few shower curtains and sprayed up some walls trying to get my legs tan, but now it comes in a cream so no more mess. It’s water resistant so you can tan up your legs even when heading to the pool or beach and the only way to get this stuff off is with a lot of soap and water. If you haven’t tried it, it’s like a concealer for your legs. Bumps, bug bites, skin imperfections… all that stuff disappears. If you think you are the fairest of them all, they came out with a new color called Fairest. They even have travel size, perfect for packing for your summer trips. After you try it, send me an email to thank me for changing your life!

L’Oreal Visible Lift CC Eye Concealer

I have terrible circles under my eyes and never could find a concealer that could camouflage these enough for me. I also have very dry skin so these products often created more dryness and creases around my eyes contributing to my tired look. I wish I could kiss L’Oreal for making this product. It actually hides my circles and it doesn’t dry out my skin. If you have had a bad night with the kids, this stuff makes you look well-rested. I also really love the roller ball applicator on this one.

Mane ‘n Tail Hoofmaker Hand & Nail Therapy

Have some hooves for feet?  Me too.  This stuff costs less than $3 and works better than any fancy foot creams I have ever bought. I keep it in my nightstand and use it at night on my hands and feet. It also helps repair your nails especially if you have indulged in one too many shellacs (*ahem*)!

Secret Clinical Strength

Between my sweaty gym routines and and the days spent outside working on the yard or taking my kids to the pool, I can be one sweaty mess. This deodorant is amazing at keeping sweat at bay and has helped boost my confidence a lot this summer. If you are looking for a deodorant with staying power, give this one a spin! I promise it won’t disappoint!

I hope I haven’t given all my secrets away in my very first post, but I love sharing my favorites with you. Do you have any beauty products you think I should give a spin this summer? Let me know in the comments so I can try them out! I’m always looking for new products to add to my beauty routines! xo

A Real Review of Golden Tote

A Real Review of Golden Tote from MomAdvice.com

I received a tote of clothing from Golden Tote in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions on this service.

Last month I reached out to Golden Tote for a potential partnership highlighting their services for those who have been on the capsule wardrobe adventure with me this year.  I have been trying out different subscription services this year, but they all have been disappointing and too pricey for me to recommend as a great service on our site. The wardrobe options that I had seen of items available through Golden Tote seemed like smarter basics and better quality for a lot less than some of the other services I tried. Golden Tote agreed to send me a tote in exchange for an honest post today on my blog.

What the Heck is Golden Tote?

Golden Tote offers you the chance to create a style profile (describing your likes, dislikes, size, and styles you relate most to) and then they use this profile to create a tote bag of items for you based upon your style profile and selections. They offer two totes priced at $49 (that contains 2-3 pieces in it) or a tote priced at $149 (that contains five to six pieces). You can pick one or two items (again, this is based upon the tote size you selected) and then their team of stylists selects the additional items that are included in the tote. The price averages approximately $26 each piece, making it a more affordable option compared to a service like Stitch Fix. They also offer you a boutique option where you can purchase additional items to be shipped with your tote that can be purchased individually rather than their tote bag concept.

What is the Catch With Golden Tote?

If you don’t like something, you do not have the option to return a portion of your tote for a refund. You can return the entire tote (including the items you picked) or you can try to trade/sell the items that you don’t love by joining their Golden Tote Facebook group. The Golden Tote Facebook Group, I have found, is a warm and enthusiastic crowd where you can virtually share your tote and get supportive & honest opinions on what the company sent you. This is where you can also buy, sell, or trade your items with one another.

Sizing is always an issue for me because I am petite and it is a very rare occurrence that I can wear something off of the hanger even in an XS size.  Three of the items that I received will require alterations so I always have to factor that cost in for myself. If you are a girl who struggles with sizing too, factor the cost of alterations into your tote wardrobe.

Why Did I Want to Pursue This For My Capsule Wardrobe?

Each capsule I add a few pieces into my wardrobe that I think will be good investments and keep things fun to help me break up the habit of wanting to shop during my three-month hiatus. I love the challenge of creating many outfits from one piece and I wanted to see if there would be the same versatility and fun with my capsule wardrobe creating if I utilized a stylist service to help outfit me. I have styled all of the items with things that will be going into the next capsule to show you a few ways I plan to wear them. I think this is a great option for people who want to take the guess work out of purchases and want to stay on trend with their wardrobe.

Let’s take a peek at what was in my first Golden Tote bag!

These are the two items that I selected for myself and, as expected, these are the two items that I really loved the most.  As you can see, the Covered in Diamonds Dress (from Collective Concepts, in emerald green) can easily be dressed up or dressed down. It is fully lined and an appropriate length for a busy mom like me and it has a little clasp on the chest to keep everything ladylike without the need for a camisole underneath. It will require alterations due to the volume on top, but it is so versatile that I will be adding this to my capsule wardrobe this year.

The May Flowers top is a beautiful floral from Skies Are Blue that I will be wearing a lot in my capsule this summer and fall. Again, I will need to have this altered since the top is really boxy on me, but a belt makes it picture-perfect for right now!  This will pair perfectly with my emerald green cardigan for Fall and early Spring. Thanks to its colors, it will go perfectly with just about everything in my capsule.

Clearly, I know how to pick them- ha! Let’s see what Golden Tote put in my bag this month!

A Real Review of Golden Tote from MomAdvice.com

An embroidered peasant top has been on my wish list for summer so I was really excited to get this from Le Sample. I can wear this with my jeans or shorts this summer. I was worried this would be too boxy for me, but I love how the material drapes when I put it on. This one was a winner for me and is definitely going to get a lot of love this summer!

Pardon the sunburn on the neck from my project this weekend, but I had to show you the front and back of this adorable top that they sent. This top from Potter’s Pot has a print that I think will work fabulously for summer or fall. I wasn’t sold on this until I put it on and I think it is the detail on the neckline that really sold me on this one. I ended up really loving this one and am also putting this in my capsule!
A Real Review of Golden Tote from MomAdvice.com

This item is going to be altered because it is a DRESS not a shirt from Promesa. The material feels like the softest pajamas in the world and I like the way that the lines are cut on this. For a dress, for a Sir-Mix-A-Lot girl (if you know what I’m saying) it was an epic fail. I am too wide on bottom for this one and the stripes hit me in the wrong direction.

NO!  #sirmixalot

I’m taking this one in to be altered into a shirt- a little less volume on top and shortening the bottom so I can wear it with my leggings, jeans, or black slacks.  This seems like the perfect solution for something that feels like pajamas and that can easily transition into fall. Sometimes you do need to think outside the box… or the tote…you know what I mean?

This last dress will also require some alterations and it was a complete surprise how much I loved it. It’s also from Skies Are Blue and it feels like pajamas, but I could style it up or down depending on my mood.  It was another lovely surprise and home run from Golden Tote.

That is everything that was in my tote this month and I am trading/selling ZERO items! Yup, I love them all and they all are going in my capsule for this summer (reveal coming soon!!).  The care tags on most of these items require hanging dry and gentle cycle. I want my clothes to last and look great in my capsule so I do this already. It is something to keep in mind though if you are hard on your clothing.

I would love to hear if you have tried Golden Tote and what your experience has been since this is my first tote? Leave your comments below!

*This post is sponsored by Shoe Carnival.  Thank you for supporting the companies that support this site!

Ladies, it is almost OUR DAY and in honor of all the hard working mamas out there, I am so excited to be partnering up with Shoe Carnival for this Mother’s Day to show off some delightfully fashionable & comfortable shoes you can find for yourself at their fantastic store. Not only am I sharing about my own finds, but I am also giving FOUR lucky moms a $50 gift card to treat themselves this Mother’s Day to some new shoes too!

Mother's Day Shoe Shopping With Shoe Carnival

It is (WITH PLEASURE) that I get to act as your tour guide into some of my favorite options I found at my store!

To say that I am obsessed with shoes would be an understatement. Although I have learned to whittle my wardrobe down to a manageable amount, my shoe collection continues to grow and, I humbly admit, that will never change. To put it simply, a good pair of shoes make the outfit. With a small wardrobe, a good pair of shoes adds a plethora of new possibilities with my wardrobe.

What has changed for me though is that my feet are no longer happy in shoes that don’t offer loads of comfort and support. As a busy mom, I’m on my feet all day and I embrace that I need more supportive shoes than I did in my twenties  Thankfully, shoes with loads of support can still be highly fashionable and here are a few of the beautiful pairs I found while browsing their store.

Mother's Day Shoe Shopping With Shoe Carnival

The New Balance Classic 574’s have been on my wish list this year especially after seeing the world’s most fashionable city girls sporting them around town on Pinterest.  These shoes are definitely both stylish and comfortable. The best part about styling these New Balance Classics is that they can be dressed up with leggings and a great shirt or you can dress them down in rolled skinnies and a t-shirt.  For ladies with a wider foot, I highly recommend these for the ultimate girl-about-town sneaker.

If you are looking for a modern take on the New Balance, I fell in love with these New Balance WX711 fitness-trainers and I have a feeling they are going to be my new favorite workout shoe thanks to their ultra soft and responsive cushioning that is made for all day comfort. The shoes are so lightweight that I can’t wait to give these a test run at my local gym especially when doing kicks and lunges in my total body conditioning class.

Birkenstocks have always felt unfeminine to me so they have never been a go-to shoe even when they have been trendy.  I do love the trend for comfort though so I was very excited to find these affordable Unr8ed Lydia Sandals, both for their floral femininity and their trendy footbed style.  How cute are those?

Mother's Day Shoe Shopping With Shoe Carnival

As we prepare to head to Italy for our anniversary in just a couple of short weeks, I have been on the hunt for the perfect shoes that would look great with jeans or with dresses. I stumbled upon these Clarks Wendy Estate shoes and fell in love.  I wore them on a trip last week and it felt as though I was wearing the world’s comfiest slipper even when I had been running through the airport and navigating those long hallways to my hotel room. Not only is the shoe cushioned, but it also has supportive cushioning around the heel and Velcro adjustable straps that help ensure you have the perfect fit and no sore feet at the end of the day.  A tiny heel helps these feel more dressy while still embracing the comfort that our family has always loved from the Clarks brand.

Mother's Day Shoe Shopping With Shoe Carnival

Who wants to go shopping now? Mother’s Day is all about treating yourself and I am so excited to be sharing a giveaway with you to treat yourself to a comfy AND stylish pair of shoes.

Not only did I love the good deals I found at the store, but I am a big fan of great rewards programs and Shoe Carnival offers both. When visiting your store, don’t forget to sign up for the Shoe Perks Rewards Program. You earn a point for every dollar you spend, receive a $10 Shoe Perks reward certificate for every 200 points earned, and get 50 points just for joining! Spring Fashion Trends with Audrey McClelland

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

I’m so happy that Audrey McClelland of Mom Generations is sharing her unique take on some of the fashion trends for spring. She is focusing on finding items that anyone of us can use to update our wardrobes, no matter our shape, age, or size. Audrey is one of my oldest & dearest friends in the blogging world and her success has been such an honor to watch unfold. Be sure to check out her new series special on TLC and enjoy these tips from one of my favorite people today! xo

2015 Spring Trends for Every Woman Spring is here!

The flowers are blooming.

The sun is out and actually warm.

Kids are riding bikes around our neighborhood and thoroughly enjoying the fact that it’s a new season. After the winter we’ve had in New England, we deserve this spring more than anything!

Spring is my favorite season for many reasons. I love seeing the beautiful, bold colors of nature around me. I love trading in my boots, scarves, hats and coats for tees, tanks and capris. I love having it stay light out till 7PM and soaking up every second of daylight possible.

My brightened mood is always reflected through my fashion attire in the spring. I really start to have some fashion fun and create styles/looks that make me feel happy from head-to-toe. This season there are some fabulous fashion trends that are perfection for every woman – regardless of shape, size and age. One of my favorite things to do on the fashion side of things is find trends that work for every woman. All trends aren’t created equal for every woman, I love finding the ones that are equal for all.

Here are 5 Spring Fashion Trends to get on your radar this season:

Spring Trends 2015-Pop of Color

1. Pop of Color in your Accessories – I love any trend that works with your accessories because it’s such an easy way to invest and reuse an item over and over and over again. My advice this spring? Invest in a handbag that truly gives that gorgeous POP of color! Great way to have come fashion fun and really add some va-va-voom to an outfit!

Spring Trends 2015-Printed Pants

2. Printed Pants – Any kind of print, find it and wear it! I love printed pants because there are so many different patterns/prints to choose from with them. Find a print that speaks to you and just wear it PROUD!

Spring Trends 2015-Denim Blues

3. Denim Blues – Denim lovers? Unite. Denim is hot to trot this spring! From jeans to jackets to dresses to handbags… you’re going to love it. I love denim, so for me – this is a dream come fashion true. The best part is a majority of us have a ton of denim already! Find it, wear it!

Spring Trends 2015-Florals

4. Florals – Flowers are blooming right now, so it’s only appropriate that florals find their way into fashion, too. I love the delicate look of a floral print on a handbag or spring/summer dress. The elegance of a gorgeous floral print is truly timeless and can easily be worn season-to-season.

Spring Trends 2015-Fringe

5. Fringe – Oh, yes! A fabulous trend that is fun and flirty and adorable! I love fringe on handbags! It doesn’t matter how you’re bringing the fringe in, it’s such a fun trend! You’ll see it a ton on tops and handbags right now.

Happy Spring FASHION!
