Great Reads for Moms: May ’12 Edition

June 5th, 2012

I can’t believe that is already the time for summer reading. Next week I am going to try and round-up a few of my favorite beach reads for your summer enjoyment. I am running a bit behind on my May reviews, but only because I really wanted four really great books to share with you.

If you are looking for a little inspiration this new year, be sure to check our MomAdvice fan page for a weekly check-in on what everyone is reading each week on our Facebook Fan Page. I hope you will swing by on Fridays and share about the books you are working on or request recommendations with one another. So far it is a huge success and I have gotten a few new ideas for my own stack!

Just as a reminder, I read many more books than are just featured here, but try to feature the ones that are my absolute best picks of the month here. If you want to read more, please feel free to friend me on GoodReads! You can find me right here and I am always happy to connect with people there too! There is nothing more motivating than seeing what other people are raving about and my to-be-read pile continues to grow with all of my new friends on there! In fact, many of the books featured are ones that I have found through my friends on GoodReads.

The Healing by Jonathan Odell

A Mississippi plantation mistress, Amanda Satterfield, loses her daughter to cholera after her husband refuses to treat her for what he refers to as a, “slave disease.” In turn of these events, Amanda begins to lose her mind and decides to take a newborn slave in as her own, taking her from her family that loves her. She renames the little girl Granada, and begins to parade her around in her daughter’s clothing and allowing her to be part of family dinners, despite her husband and their friends discomfort.

Troubled not only by his wife’s mental illness, but by the plague that seems to be sweeping through his slave population, Master Satterfield purchases Polly Shine, a slave who is known to be a healer. When Polly sets eyes upon Granada, she knows that she has the gift and requests that Granada be removed from the home so she can shadow Polly.

Seventy-five years later, Granada is now known as Gran Gran and takes in an abandoned girl in her care. To help the girl to come out of her shell, she shares with her the powerful story of learning to let go of the girl that she thought she was to be to the mistress, to the amazing road of being a healer herself.

I guarantee that you will love this book if you are fans of The Kitchen House, Dry Grass of August, or The Help. The story is achingly beautiful and written in such a way that you will long remember it in your heart. I can’t recommend this one enough, friends!

The Song Remains the Same by Allison Winn Scotch

If there is one author that I rely upon for really good chick lit, it is Allison Winn Scotch. I really loved her latest book a lot, but have to say that, “Time of My Life,” still resides as my all-time favorite piece of literature that she has written. She delivers another strong book though that would be perfect beach reading material.

In this book the author explores who we are without our memories and how much of our future seems grounded in our past. While many of her books have a magical spin to them, this one offers a more real-life slant while still exploring the, “what if’s,” that I think you will really enjoy.

Nell Slattery awakens in a hospital without a single memory of who she is or was after being only one of two survivors in a tragic plane crash. She now must piece together her life with the help of her family and friends. What she doesn’t realize is that each of the people in her life have their own agenda and have found themselves having a fresh start with Nell.

Nell is constantly questioning everyone in her life whether it is her mother about where her father is, her sister and the business that they have created together, or her husband who seems overly thrilled at her attention.

Nell begins to piece together her past through the bits and pieces she discovers in her home and office. What she discovers is that maybe she doesn’t want to be who she was anymore, but if she isn’t who she was….who is she?

Sister by Rosamund Lupton

I have never read a book by Rosamund Lupton before, but after reading this one, I immediately picked up her next book. Sister is a combination of a murder mystery, a medical thriller, and the beauty of love between two sisters.

Beatrice grew up in London and has made a new life for herself in New York. She has everything that she could ever want- a fiance, her own place, and a promising career. Her life is forever changed when she receives a call and is told that her sister, Tess, has gone missing. She abruptly leaves her New York life behind to assist the police in their missing persons case.

Tess has never been the responsible sister and lives her life in a small apartment as an art student. She was pregnant when she went missing and had been having an affair with an art teacher. With her history and the people she has in her life, everyone is a suspect in her murder.

With a list of suspects a mile long, the writer takes you on a case that is woven with many layers and possible suspects. The reader learns all the aspects of the case through Beatrice’s eyes as she assists in the murderer’s trial by sharing how she figured out who he/she is.

This book has a very slow build which could turn off some readers. The final twist at the end of this book though makes the building of plot worth pursuing. This would be a great book to add to your beach bag this summer!

The Good Father by Diane Chamberlain

Diane Chamberlain is one of those authors that rarely disappoints and her books are always my go-to books when I am in a reading slump. The Good Father is an amazing emotional novel about what a young father will do in order to provide for his daughter.

Travis Brown is a single father in his early twenties on the verge of being homeless and is the sole provider for his beautiful daughter Bella, who is only four years old. He desperately moves to Raleigh in hopes of finding a great job as a contractor, but once he arrives, things turn out very differently. The job that he is to take as a contractor is actually a job that could put him in prison. Sadly, he has no money for food or shelter for his little girl and he decides to take the job to make some quick cash until they can get back on their feet again.

Bella has never met her mother, but Robin is leading a life that is in sharp contrast to her own. She is engaged to a wealthy politician and leading a life of luxury, assisting the family with their bed & breakfast. She hasn’t really thought about the daughter she gave up until recently. When the family faces their own controversial teen pregnancy, it is when she begins to reflect on her own and wonder what has happened to her daughter and to Travis.

Erin and her husband have recently lost their own four year old daughter in a terrible accident on a pier. Erin spends her life on forums for parents that have suffered the loss of a child and finds herself detached from the real life. As she is chatting on her forum in a coffee shop, she meets Travis & Bella, and immediately becomes drawn to them. She has no idea what an important part she will play in Bella’s future, but their lives will soon collide in an unexpected way.

Told in alternating points of view, as is characteristic of Diane’s novels, you get to see the story from many different angles. It is a gripping novel that I read in a mere 24 hours and promptly handed on to my girlfriend so I had someone to discuss it with. I know you will love it too!

The World’s Greatest Homemade Bubbles Recipe

June 4th, 2012

Three years ago I decided to make our family a batch of homemade bubbles after discovering how easy it was to make these at home. Our homemade bubbles, literally, attracted the neighbors due to their sheer volume and and staying power that they had. Ever since that day, making the first batch of bubbles just screams, “IT’S SUMMER!” to me.

The trick to creating the world’s greatest bubbles is the addition of a little glycerin to every batch. You can find the glycerin over by the first aid supplies or you can ask the pharmacist if they have a bottle of it behind the counter. It is a small bottle of liquid that helps give your bubbles real staying power. After reading up on the science of it, I discovered that glycerin added to the soap solution slows evaporation so the soap film stays intact longer. I can’t argue with the science behind it and neither will you after you make these.

This year we put our bubbles in an iced tea container that I found over in the summer housewares, to help make pouring and filling our bubbles easier. The very first day, my daughter refilled it forty-five times then tipped the entire thing over and dumped all the bubbles out. You have been warned. Pouring bubbles out of a dispenser like this allows for unlimited refills and that spout happens to be irresistible.

We made pipe cleaner bubble wands together and spelled out our name and phrases with wooden beads I found in the craft department. Such a simple idea, but endless possibilities for shapes and designs.

Our school ends on Thursday and we can’t wait to start sharing our summer with you! We are looking forward to our carefree summer days and sharing those with you through the blog.

Have you joined in on our 100 days of summer fun? I am still adding daily to our 2012 board ideas, inspiration, and even ways to craft out that summer list as a family.

If you are on Instagram, you can join in on the fun by taking pictures and sharing all of your summer adventures through there. Let’s use the hashtag #100summerdays. Unfortunately, the hashtag that sounds like the event has been taken by Yelp so this is the best I could do!  My username is momadvice and I am happy to have you follow our adventures and follow along with yours!

By tagging your photos, it will make it easy to find each other in the group and share the projects we are tackling together. You can add the tags to your caption or you can add them as a comment later. In either scenario, the tag will pull it into our summer group.

Looking forward to spending the summer with you, friends!

Review: Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy Shampoo & Conditioner (Video)

May 29th, 2012

(on set at Lunchbox Studios)

It is rare that I do very many reviews on this blog, but I had the unique opportunity to try Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner for a week and head to LA to share my experience with the product before it went out on the store shelves.

In full disclosure, I have perhaps the driest hair in the world with lots of frizz. I am one of those girls that jumps from product to product hoping to find a magical cure that will give me sleek and shiny hair. I had doubts that I would ever find a shampoo that would help, but after 7 days with this shampoo and conditioner, I am a believer that a good shampoo and conditioner can make all the difference.

The unique thing about this is the idea of nourishing your scalp first. Traditionally, we have always been taught to ignore our scalp and focus on the ends of our hair. I have a very dry and flaky scalp, but worried that if I did apply conditioner to my scalp that it would weigh down my hair and cause me to have an root. With this product, you are instructed to nourish your scalp and concentrate your efforts on restoring the nourishment to the scalp instead of ignoring it. Surprisingly, I am no longer suffering from a flaky scalp and the product has not weighed down my hair at all.

How fun and glamorous to get to go and share your thoughts about the products you use on camera. It really was a blast! Here is a quick 30 second clip from the shoot.

You can see this clip plus some others now as in-store programming in Walmart Stores across the nation.  You can also see some different clips from myself as well as my other fellow Walmart Moms-  Colleen, Erika, Caryn, and Christine on the Clear Scalp and Hair Beauty Therapy landing page on Walmart.com. (Scroll all the way to the bottom then click that bottom picture of my beautiful friend, Erika, on the right)

I am still using the product and doubt that I will be switching. The difference is noticeable to me and has made me feel more confident. I think you would really love it too!

I also thought you might enjoy seeing this capture of me behind-the-scenes. I was happily plugging away at my knitting and working on another chemo cap for a friend while I waited my turn to get my hair & make-up done.

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post as a part of my role in the Walmart Moms program. I received product and was paid for my time in Los Angeles shooting the video. However, all opinions are, always have been, and always will be 100% my own.

Father’s Day Craft: DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie Jars

May 22nd, 2012

DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie Jars

I am so excited to share with you a fun craft today that you can do to spoil the dads in your life this year for Father’s Day. Today I am showcasing this EASY DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie Jar that you can create using some inexpensive supplies and fill with your dad’s favorite treat.

Before I get started, I want you to know that crafting is not easy for me. I really do think I was born lacking a natural crafting gene. I actually did this craft twice and failed at it the first time. I made a huge craftastrophe in my kitchen, dripped paint all over the place, and was about to give up. This craft took me THREE trips to the store and an entire day to execute. Once I figured out the best way to do it though, I felt like a craft rock star and tackled this project in less than an hour with amazing results. I just think it is nice to hear the behind-the-scenes stuff once in awhile. I have complete confidence that with this tutorial you are going to get to enjoy all of the rock star status without the drippy paint all over your kitchen.

DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie Jars DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie JarsLet’s get started with our picture of supplies and the (approximate) cost of the materials for you to recreate this craft.

For this craft you will need (all found at Walmart):

1 Gallon Cookie Jar (over by the jars in the kitchen section)- $7.44

Krylon Chalkboard Spray Paint (in the home improvement section)- $3.97

Avery Removable Wall & Window Signage Sheets (over by the office supplies)- $9.97 for 5 sheets

16 count chalk (in office supplies)- $.47

Scissors (in your craft supplies)

1 sheet of heavy cardstock (in your craft supplies)

DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie Jars

DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie Jars

First, pull out your Avery Sheets. These are probably among the most awesome find EVER for creating labels and signs. My brain is buzzing with the possibilities for these. Focus, Amy, focus…

For this craft, we are going to use the Wall Application Side for spraying with chalkboard spray paint. This is the side that has the sticky side that is removable and adjustable… perfect for people who can never get anything on their projects perfectly straight.

In a well-ventilated area covered with newspaper or cardboard, place your Avery sheet. Shake the can vigorously for two minutes. Hold can 10-14 inches away from your project and begin spraying. Spray a thin coat in a sweeping motion beginning off the surface and continuing off the other side. Follow this pattern horizontally and then vertically. Wait fifteen minutes or so and then apply another coat.  They should be dry and ready to cut in about an hour.

DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie JarsPrint out my FREE Chalkboard Conversation Bubble template on some heavy-duty cardstock. Use this template to cut out your chalkboard conversation bubbles. You should be able to get two labels from each sheet with this size label.

DIY Chalkboard Conversation Bubble Cookie JarsWrite your chalk message on the conversation bubble and then adhere the message to your cookie jar. These Avery sheets are sticky, but do not leave a residue or tear. They are heavy-duty so if Dad wants to peel it off and give the jar a good wash, he can and then place the label back on.

I filled my jars with Oatmeal Chocolate Chip & Sea Salt Cookies for each of my dads. I can’t wait to give these them and I especially love that this craft cost about $10 in supplies for each one. Not too shabby!

I am a part of the Walmart Moms program, and Walmart has provided me with compensation for these posts. My participation is voluntary and opinions are always my own.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Sea Salt Cookies

May 22nd, 2012

If you have been a reader to this blog for awhile, you know that there is nothing I love more than sweet and salty combined together. If you put the words chocolate and sea salt in a recipe together, you can guarantee that I will love and worship the recipe.

For Father’s Day, I wanted to make a fun new treat for the dad’s in my life and knew that these Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Sea Salt cookies would make an incredible treat. These offer the perfect balance in flavors. There is a lot of heartiness from the old-fashioned oatmeal in these, sweetness from tiny bits of mini chocolate chips sprinkled throughout and then a modest sprinkling of salt on the top of each of these cookies, brings all the flavors to a delicious sweet & salty finish.

I will admit that I am no pro when it comes to cookie making. I have found the two key things needed for me to succeed with cookies though is to always line my cookie sheets with parchment paper and to use a cookie scoop to get cookies that cook evenly and that are uniform.

I am always rushed when it comes to activities surrounding the holidays so I went ahead and baked these up this week for Father’s Day and placed them in my freezer for the big day. Simply follow the instructions and bake these cookies and allow them to cool completely on a cooling rack. Layer them in a freezer-safe container between sheets of waxed paper, and place them in the freezer until the night before.

If you are looking for other sweet & salty delights, be sure to give my Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt Brownies a whirl or sip on my Starbucks knock-off Salted Caramel Mocha for a midday treat.  They are just as delightful and a whole lot more sinful!
