Spring Cleaning All Year Round With Windex Touch-Up Cleaner (& a Giveaway!)

April 9th, 2013

Sorry! This giveaway is now closed! We would like to congratulate entry #2 (Stephanie) and entry #10 (Heather) on winning these prize packs!

With spring comes all of the beauty of the changing season. We finally began to see our grass; we enjoy seeing the new buds on our trees, and the sweet smell of a good April shower. What also comes  is the time for spring renewal and spring cleaning inside our homes to bring the freshness and sunshine into our space.

This year, I have vowed to “spring clean” all year long rather than trying to set aside a specific time to do this. With a very busy family schedule, it can often feel daunting to just keep up the daily maintenance of my home.  If you are anything like me, try and incorporate these tips into your daily routine so that you can relax while everyone else is tired and haggard from their day of spring cleaning. Here are a few ideas for getting these tasks done:

  • Begin by making a checklist of everything that you would normally do during your spring cleaning. Things like washing all the linens and drapes, wiping down baseboards, washing windows inside and out, cleaning out your pantry, washing your shower curtains, organizing your linen cabinets, wiping down walls, and cleaning doorknobs and light fixtures.
  • Take inventory of your cleaners and the tools that you will need in order to accomplish all of the necessary cleaning. Nothing is worse than getting ready to do it and then finding out that you are missing that one component needed to complete your task. Put the items that you will need on your shopping list and get them on the day that you perform all of your errands. Some items I like to always have on hand are microfiber cloths (for dusting and wiping down electronic surfaces), newspaper for a lint-free swipe on my mirrors, dusting spray, and a good all-purpose cleaner. I love the Windex® Touch-Up Cleaner for easily and effortlessly cleaning your home’s surfaces. Use this cleaner for wiping down sinks, counter tops, toilets, the outside of your appliances, stove tops, sealed granite, sealed marble, glass, chrome, glazed ceramic tile, finished wood and more.
  • Continue doing your normal daily routine, but add an extra hour each week towards accomplishing just one of these tasks on your list. Check off the items that you accomplish and press on to the next one. By just devoting one hour a week towards your spring cleaning goals you will have a more manageable deep cleaning routine.
  • Clear out as much clutter as you can. Make a box for trash and a box for charitable donations and fill these with all of the unnecessary clutter in your home. By donating these items to those less fortunate you will gain so much. Not only will someone who needs these items more benefit from your donation, but you can receive a tax break and reclaim space in your own home. My theory is, if you don’t like to dust it and aren’t in love with items in your home- donate it!
  • Try keeping a cleaning schedule that fits with your life and your family’s life. Some people work better during morning hours while others of us would rather be snoozing and do better in the evening. Take advantage of the times that you work best.
  • Put your spring cleaning task on your calendar each week. It sounds silly, but don’t you remember your appointments and engagements better when it is written on your calendar?

  • Enlist your helpers to help you on these tasks. Your children and your husband can be active participants in getting your home organized just like they help to contribute to the clutter. Schedule dad for clearing out the garage, taking inventory of the tools you will need to do your gardening, cleaning out the basement, or other tasks inside and outside of the home. Children can aid in cleaning their own rooms by helping to remove some of the clutter in the house. Involving your family can be beneficial in showing them all that you do to keep your house running smoothly.

If your children need an extra incentive, be sure to print out our free handy chore punch cards to motivate your kids to be involved in the cleaning process!

Pecan-Crusted Chicken Tenders With Yogurt Dill Dip

April 8th, 2013

pecan chicken tenders

I love crunchy breaded chicken and these Pecan-Crusted Chicken Tenders fit the bill perfectly with a healthy and wholesome breading that you will love. These pecan-crusted chicken tenders have a pecan coating made from pecans, a little whole wheat flour, and panko.

pecan-chicken-tenders-1
I made a triple batch of these for our family. If you have the food processor out, you might as well make a large batch of coating so that you can enjoy these all week long. These can be wrapped in tortillas with a smear of the yogurt dill sauce or they can be placed on top of a delicious salad with homemade dressing.

Lining the pan with parchment paper makes for easy clean-up and still browns the bottom of the tenders beautifully!

pecan-chicken-tenders-2
There are two things that really make these tenders a standout. One is the incorporation of spices in the coating. Dry mustard, the smokiness of the paprika, the rich flavor of garlic and onion powder all add to the flavorful coating and make the coating as delicious as the tender chicken inside. The second thing that really makes these is the yogurt-dill sauce for dipping your tenders in. I used Chobani Greek Yogurt which, thanks to the thickness and flavor, it makes this sauce feel as indulgent as Ranch dressing.

My kids were happy little dippers and this was a great way for them to get a little dairy in their diet without them knowing.

Easy Bloody Mary Mix

April 2nd, 2013

Bloody Mary drinks trump a Mimosa any day in my book thanks to their rich tomato flavor and addition of everything in your pantry and spice cabinet. Today’s recipe is for an easy Bloody Mary Mix that you can create with items you probably already have in your home. This Bloody Mary Mix can be enjoyed with vodka or without and garnished with delicious green olives and celery stalks for stirrers.

Thanks to the kiddos being in school during the day, my husband and I have been enjoying day dates instead where we can save on the babysitter and I have more time to really enjoy being leisurely in the kitchen.

I decided one week to test a variety of breakfast recipes from our French Breakfast Donuts to these Quinioa Berry Breakfast Bowls to the Bloody Mary, and my husband took the day off so we could sit around and brunch all day long while watching a movie on the television at home.

It was an inexpensive date that yielded breakfast treats and snacks all week long and tasted far better than anything we would enjoy when dining out. The bonus was that I never left my pajamas.  Doesn’t everything taste better when you are in your pajamas?

I am a little picky about my Bloody Mary so it can be a gamble when dining out if the Bloody Mary will be to my liking. I like it spicy, but not too spicy. I also like a little bit of seasoning, but I don’t like it to be gritty. This Bloody Mary mix is my favorite because it has just the right balance of spices, heat, and has a good balance of flavors, especially when left overnight in the fridge so that the flavors can all blend well together.

I hope you can give this Bloody Mary Mix a try! It is a great recipe to have tucked away for your next brunch especially since a big batch can be made the day before along with an overnight strata or quiche. This is effortless entertaining, truly at it’s finest!

Easy Knitted Ruffled Scarf With Sashay Yarn

April 1st, 2013

I love to find fast & easy knitted projects and today I have the perfect beginner knitting project for you using a new yarn from Red Heart called Sashay Yarn. Red Heart Boutique Sashay Yarn is a unique yarn that creates a beautiful ruffled scarf with a simple six stitch cast-on. Red Heart sent me this yarn and some knitting supplies to show off just how easy it is to create a project with this inexpensive and fun yarn.

The first thing you will notice is that this yarn is very different than a traditional yarn. I will admit that I usually avoid novelty yarns except for trimming knitted projects so it is the type of yarn that I have probably walked by countless times at our local Walmart. Instead of a traditional single strand, this yarn is actually a woven yarn that features a touch of metallic for an extra edge to your ruffled projects. The yarn is made of 97 percent acrylic and 3 percent metallic polyester. One skein yields 30 yards of yarn, which can create a five foot ruffled scarf with just one ball.

Longtime readers may have remembered these amazing ruffled scarves I knitted for gifts one Christmas. As the last picture shows you, it was an insane amount of stitches that required an infinite amount of patience to cast on and to cast off. The last two rows on this scarf had over a thousand stitches each. The beauty of that ruffle made it all worthwhile, but for a beginning knitter, this process is both daunting and time-consuming. For an experienced knitter, it just takes a long time to  yield impressive results.

Knitting with Sashay Yarn creates a fast ruffle in no time and with only six stitches cast on!  As you can see from this picture, the yarn is already woven so it creates the ruffle without you needing to knit it and when knitting this scarf, you just gather this woven yarn into ruffles with simple garter stitches.

Rather than casting on with your traditional cast-on, you will simply pick up stitches off of the edge of the yarn. When knitting, you knit as you would normally, just picking up along the edge, but you skip the first loop of yarn and then slip into the second loop for the stitches. Casting off is done in the same way, with the skipping of one loop between each stitch, and then with the final loop of thread on your needle, you just weave the tail end through to finish your project. I then trimmed the edges of my scarf to make them even.

Some of my own personal recommendations when knitting this pattern (linked below)  are to choose needles that are shorter in length and to use bamboo ones (these are the ones that I use)  that will help to grip the threads better and keep your stitches in place.

The scarf is simply stunning and costs a mere $4.67 (at Walmart) to create and took about two nights of knitting to create. With simply six stitches and no pattern to follow, this is the perfect project to do while watching your favorite shows on television or to take with you while the kids are doing their extracurricular activities.

I imagine that this will make a perfect Mother’s Day gift this year and I can’t wait to show you what else I am up to with the next ball of yarn I have! What can I say? I am addicted to fast and easy projects these days!
