Progress Report: Day Five in the Kitchen

Friday, March 14th, 2008

I got rid of one bin of stuff and one trash bag full of items to donate. My tote was full of baby feeding supplies, a surplus of sippy cups, extra cookware, and a few duplicate items in my kitchen.

I was able to clear out enough stuff in one of my cabinets that I am now able to tuck my cookbooks in one of them. Before my cookbooks were shoved in a corner gathering dust and creating clutter in a corner in my kitchen. It is so nice to have them accessible and easy to get to.

I also was able to clear out an entire junk drawer (which produced several great finds that will save me some money this month, like batteries for my garage door opener!) and now I can open the drawer without it getting stuck on papers and junk!

Thank You Writers Strike Part III

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

We are down to basic channels, thanks to the writers strike! I am finding my life to be much fuller since we cut down our television watching. Direct TV had raised our rates again (just another $5 after the numerous $5-8 rate increases) and I just thought to myself, “Now what sensible person would continue taking it from the man?”

Ryan isn’t really as on board with this decision, but I suggested all of the great things we could do with our thirty dollar a month savings. We could maybe get a couple of new Wii games, we could have a great date night (and TALK!), we could read the same book and talk about it, we could play board games, we can enjoy taking walks… the possiblities are endless!

I went on the website, I picked the option to change my plan, and then I thought of all the shows we couldn’t see and that I would miss.

We will see how it goes, but I am committed to trying!

Sound Off: Do you have cable or satellite television? What type of plan are you on?

Another week and another month behind us! I just want to thank everyone who continues to support my efforts here. Your comments and emails totally make my day.

This is what I have been up to for this week:

Featured Article:

Spring Cleaning for Todays Mom- With spring comes all of the beauty of the changing season. We finally began to see our grass; we enjoy seeing the new buds on our trees, and the sweet smell of a good April shower. What also comes along is the dreaded ritual of spring cleaning. Maybe you went through this awful experience as a child. Your mother would be pulling all the linens, washing the drapes, deep cleaning every nook and cranny of your home and then collapse after a full day of cleaning. I don’t remember this as being a fun ritual for our family and have decided to try a different method of cleaning in our own home…..Continue Reading

Forum Discussions:

Have any of you taught your babies sign language? If so, was your experience positive? Are there specific web sites or books you would recommend? I am working with my daughter on a few signs, and sometimes she makes the signs for “eat” and “more”. I think it would be helpful if I had some good resources…I love the idea of teaching her to sign words before she can say them, so she can tell me what she wants. She has just gotten to the stage where she points to everything and is starting to get impatient when I don’t understand what she wants… Join the Discussion

I was wondering if anyone has had any success at earning a little extra income with Online Surveys? I’ve been checking out a few sites, but I really have no idea where to even start.. Join the Discussion

Have a Blog? Need Some Fuel?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Mashable shares that Joffery’s Coffee & Tea company is offering bloggers a chance to sample their new coffee flavor… for free. 10,000 spots are available to “beta test” their new flavor. Not only that, but you can add a link to your blog on their site. I was number 399 when I signed up so there are definitely spots still available. Read their post to get the full scoop.

Thanks to my hubby for sending this freebie my way! He knows how happy coffee makes me!

MomAdvice Weekly Recap: 02.22.08

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Keeping up with everything can get overwhelming for me, so I imagine that as a new visitor, the site can put a person on overload.

I am going to start a weekly recap of activity on here, that might get missed in the shuffle, and highlight everything we have been up to.

Of course, no recap would be complete without a few highlights from our archives so I will include a couple of those too.

Please let me know if you find this helpful and if you would like me to continue this each week- I would really appreciate it!

New Article:

A Frugal Mom’s Guide to Coffee- I have a hard time resisting a cup of coffee at a coffee shop. It isn’t just the coffee itself, but it is the act of going to get a cup of coffee, the soft music, and the break away from it all. If I am having a hard day with the kids or I just long for a small treat for myself, the first place I think of is the coffee shop. In some ways I have replaced my desire to shop with a desire to just have some quiet time alone with a delicious cup of hot coffee and a book….Continue Reading

Blogging Mentions

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Today we got a mention on the MSN Money Blog, run by Donna Freedman, for my contribution towards Frugal Hacks last week. Her post entitled, “Frugality is Not a Competition” also questioned the need to beat each other up on forums and within chat communities for not being frugal enough. We thank Donna for including us and all of the other amazing bloggers who mentioned our piece. We saw a nice ripple in our community and we are thankful to have been part of that!

Lucky for us, we were also added to a new feed aggregate created by the infamous Guy Kawasaki. Guy has included us before in his Ultimate Mommy Blog list. Now he has created a place where you can view all the top sites in all different genres. His site makes it easier to see and view the latest entries for all of the top sites for every kind of category from gaming to celebrities to cars all on one page. The site is called Alltop and you can find us in the Mom category.

Thanks to everyone who has been so instrumental in making our site a success- we couldn’t do it without you!

Don’t Forget!

Are you heading over to IHOP today to get your free pancake fix? IHOP’s National Pancake Day is today! From 7AM-10PM you can get your free short stack of pancakes. Donations are requested for the Children’s Miracle Network that day.

This is one of my favorite freebies and I look forward to it ever year. I hope you can enjoy a fun and free lunch!

Welcome, CBS Early Show Viewers

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

It FINALLY aired! I am so relieved and happy with how the piece turned out. I hope you will get a chance to check it out. This is our first national coverage for our site.

I apologize that I didn’t get a chance to share it with all of you, but with the holiday craziness I didn’t have time to let everyone know. I also was afraid it might get pushed back again so I figured I would wait and share the clip when it was posted.

Here is the segment! Let me know what you think and a warm welcome to our new visitors who have found our website.

Thanks, CBS!!

Too Sick

I am so sorry that there was no Freebie Friday this week. Emily & I have the worst case of stomach flu ever and I don’t have the energy to post. I will try and put some freebies up next week when we are feeling better.

Have a wonderful weekend!
