Gifts You Can Make: Kimba-Inspired Holiday Wreaths

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

A Soft Place to Land has been a longtime source for me to find fantastically frugal decorating ideas. It started with two white pumpkins that sit on my step each year, it graduated into a ping pong wreath extravaganza, and now it has moved into the world of holiday wreaths.

When Kimba shared her e-book with me, it came with no expectations other than a chance to read it and enjoy it. I couldn’t help but read it and become immediately inspired to make the projects that were highlighted. The tutorials were easy to understand, the projects were budget-friendly, and I found a few new holiday traditions I would like to try.

Pictured above is the first holiday wreath that I decided to make out of her book. Putting things in perspective, this wreath is a gigantic 30″ wreath that looks expensively store-bought. It looks so expensively store-bought that I was genuinely offended that my husband never remarked a word about it. After stewing all day on irritation, I asked if he realized that this required a bit of work and effort with my glue gun. He was stunned…he thought I bought it. “If you only knew how much I am worth,” I muttered beneath my breath.

Pricing wreaths out at Hobby Lobby, I found I could get a scrawny 20″ wreath with three pine cones on it for about $100. This 30″ overloaded wreath cost about $30 in materials and is a genuine show-stopper! The tutorial guided you through ideas on how to achieve a full wreath, how to add texture into your wreath, and guidance even on hanging your wreath. The ideas were simply genius!

Unfortunately, my glass door would not shut on all of the genius work that was done. It required the entire brunt force of my body to shut the glass door and it smashed all of its elegance out of it. No wreath that pretty should look like that.

Our house addition on a budget was the perfect new location to display our gloriously gorgeous new wreath. I was able to mount the wreath with a trusty 3M plastic hook that can be removed without any damage to my new door. The best part about this new location is that you can even see it from our front window of our house. It makes our kitchen area so festive and I know it will be used yearly.

Unlucky for me, I was back to square one on my front door. Fortunately, I bought enough materials to make a smaller version too!

The red cranberries and red ornaments make my door really pop and make our house look more welcoming. Luckily, this modestly sized wreath (20″ wide) fits comfortably behind my glass door.

Of course, after seeing my wreaths, I have gotten a few gift requests that I make a few more! This truly would make a fantastic gift for someone you love or as a gift to yourself!

Our Deliciously Pink Princess Birthday Party

Monday, December 7th, 2009

This past weekend we celebrated Emily’s 4th birthday. Being a December baby sure is hard because your birthday is always crammed into the festivities. This year we decided to do a separate friend party and family party. Her family party was celebrated this weekend with a holiday brunch at our house following her holiday concert. This took a lot of party planning to make it come together, but it was so wonderful to be sitting down fifteen minutes after everyone arrived to a delicious meal together.

I wanted her table to look very festive and Emily’s favorite color this year is pink. I pulled out a cake stand that I had bought from Goodwill and topped it with vintage-colored ornaments that we had in our holiday supplies already. The cardboard princess hat and pink vinyl tablecloth came from the newly opened Christmas Tree Shoppe ($1 for the hat and $2.99 for the tablecloth). I loved tying in the holiday and birthday elements together.

One thing I did purchase were the cupcakes for the party. Emily wanted pink princess cupcakes with sprinkles and cherries on top. My girlfriend Holly, of Sweet Cakes by Holly, was just launching her cake business in town. There is nothing I love more than work-at-home moms supporting work-at-home moms. Hiring her to do the job gave me the time I needed to pull the other food together AND support another mom doing her business. They were fantastically wonderful and pulled in our theme perfectly! The cupcake stand was found at Walmart for $5 and will be used for her friend birthday party this year too!

Emily got so many princess-y gifts including three princess nightgowns, a princess robe, a Fancy Nancy tutu with feather boa, oodles of girlie books (the favorite being Pinkalicious that was featured in our Top 10 Books to Give), a Madeline doll, a Barbie princess movie, and her very first Barbie.

Here are two of my favorite recipes from our princess birthday brunch…

Perfectly Pink Princess Party Punch

2 liter bottle strawberry-flavored soda (I found this at Walmart)
2 liter (half a bottle) Cherry 7-Up
1 (12 ounce) can frozen pink lemonade concentrate
1 can pineapple juice

Mix all the ingredients together for the punch. This will fill one large punch bowl or two smaller ones.

Overnight Breakfast Casserole for a Crowd

1 pound sliced ham (lunch meat)
2 teaspoons mustard
½ teaspoon salt
6 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
8 slices white bread, toasted & cut into cubes
8 ounces mild cheddar cheese

In a medium bowl, mix together mustard, salt, eggs, and milk. Add the ham (cut into cubes), bread cubes, and cheese, and stir to cat evenly. Pour into a greased 9×13″ baking dish. Cover & chill in the refrigerator for eight hours, or overnight. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cover and bake 60 minutes. Uncover and reduce temperature to 325 and bake for an additional 15-25 minutes or until set.

****************

Things We Did To Keep the Party… On Track

1. Cooking Prep Was Done the Day Before– I opted for overnight breakfast casseroles that could be made and refrigerated until we needed them instead of something that would need to be prepared the morning of the event.

2. I Used the Preset Functions on My Appliances- Take a peek at your stove and see if your stove offers a “Cook/Bake and Hold” option. I set my temperature to bake the casseroles at
350 degrees and then the length of time that they would need to cook. Once the casseroles were cooked, the hold option switches to keep the food warm (ours went down to 170 degrees). I also preset my coffeemaker and timed it to the time I anticipated we would be eating.

Thanks to taking advantage of these preset functions on my appliances, I was able to attend my daughter’s holiday recital and have the food cooking and coffee brewing while we enjoyed her show. If it wasn’t so fresh in my mind all of the prep work from the day before, you would have thought that the food made itself!

3. All of the Prep Was Done in Stages– Hosting a party can be really overwhelming so I always try and break down the prep work over the course of the week. One day is spent party-planning/list-making, the next day is spent shopping for what is needed, another day is spent cleaning & decorating, the last day is the food preparation and wrapping gifts. If you look at the grand picture, it is quite overwhelming. If you look at it in smaller chunks though, it makes it a little easier to manage.

Things We Did To Keep the Party… On Budget

1. We Threw a Reusable & Repurposed Kind of Party– My set of white dishes were put to good use again and I had leftover pink napkins from another party that I used for the big day. We opted for a vinyl tablecloth that will now be used for all of our girl parties ($2.99) and a cheap princess hat that made my daughter so happy.

The centerpiece was made from found items from around the house and gathered together for her table and we used the ultimate centerpiece to finish out the birthday table…the food!

If you are looking for accessories or centerpieces to keep your parties frugal, hit the thrift shops for some amazing items to take your parties to the next level. Our punch bowl was a $2 find (complete with dainty cups), the cake stand was only $1. Mix in those yard sale finds with your fancy dishes and no one will ever know the difference!

2. We Threw a Birthday Brunch– Brunch is the ultimate in frugal eating and one way that I keep my party budgets on track. With almost twenty people in our immediate family, it can be difficult to stay on budget and still throw a great party. Casseroles, coffee, and punch all are frugal food & drink alternatives. We did splurge this year with a baker’s dozen of Panera bagels and by purchasing the cupcakes this year, but by keeping the rest of the food frugal, we stayed within our budget.

3. Party Gifts Were Compliments of Swagbucks– I horde and deposit my Swagbuck points and credit them towards gift cards for Amazon. I got a nice stack of books for our little princess using these points with all of her favorite books that we have to keep checking out from the library. I don’t know anything more frugal than free gifts!

Ideas for Budget-Friendly Gifts For Guys

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

I don’t know what it is about men, but it seems that people are always looking for gift ideas for them. I have never really had a problem with buying for guys, in particular, but struggle more for those people in my life who seem to have everything. Buying gifts for the guys in your life doesn’t have to be difficult and I want to arm you with some of my favorite gifts for guys that are always a hit.

Give the Gift of Music– I am a big music-lover and the men in my life are music lovers too. Music is always a great gift to give because it is something that can be enjoyed for a very long time. I love to make a “mixed tape” of great music and then follow these instructions for making a very personalized CD cover with pictures that I know the recipient would like. Print the covers on heavy card stock and add a personal message to the recipient.

If the man in your life is more into the digital music, why not give him an iTunes gift card that can be redeemed for picking his own favorite music? These gift cards start at just $15, which would make a great gift for any music lover.

Give the Gift of Movies- One of the best gifts I have ever given has to be the gift of movies. Netflix offers a wide range of plans that you can choose from and you can purchase a month or two for your recipient for very little money. Their plans start at $8.99 and you can present the subscription in a fun way or even tuck the gift in with a popcorn tub and and some movie theater snacks.

Give the Gift of Reading- Guys love magazine subscriptions and I have found that magazine subscriptions can be bought very inexpensively off of eBay. Make your own card and tell your guy that the gift is redeemable for any magazine of his choice (except those filthy magazines which will never be purchased for your guy thankyouverymuch) and that you will get him a gift subscription. I have found subscriptions to magazines for $3 or $4 for an entire year versus the newsstand prices. If it is in your budget, you could subscribe to two or three without breaking the bank and let him think you spent a mint on him.

Give the Gift of Food & Drink- They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and I have found this is absolutely true. Whip up a special batch of his favorite snack and pair it with some of his favorite coffee. You could make him a batch of these sugar and spice nuts and pair it with a little bucket of his favorite beer. By pairing your homemade specialty with a store-bought favorite drink, you have a great combination for a perfectly budget-friendly gift.

If you want to extend the gift further, wrap up his favorite snack and give him coupons to redeem the snacks for later. This is especially effective with college-aged guys and we have made more than a few college students happy with our boxes of goodies. You can download and print our free college coupon template and mount these to card stock for holiday gift-giving.

Give the Gift of Accessories- Just like women love a good handbag, a pretty scarf, or a hot pair of shoes, men have a desire for accessories too… just not the same kind as us. If your man is into gadgets and already has them, why not supply him with some accessories for the items he already has? For example, if he has a Nintendo Wii, you could give him some Wii points to put towards one of his favorite old Mario Brothers games. Likewise, if he uses any other game system, you could buy an extra controller or a different style of controller so he could play with more of his friends. If he has a Kindle you could give him a gift certificate to Amazon to buy some book downloads. Is he into computers? Why not try and find some computer software that he could put to good use by taking advantage of those rebate offers from the office supplies stores. We often forget to reload the tech gadgets we already have so this is a cost-effective way of building upon investments that have already been made.

There are the other accessories in life too so take a peek at his belt, his wallet, his hat, his scarf, his planner. While not maybe as much fun as some of the other gifts on the list, upgrading your man’s accessories can be very thoughtful and will be used for years to come. I love to go to stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s to find these accessories because they are so deeply discounted and you can get some really great brand-names for an affordable price.

Give the Gift of Believing In Your Man- I know how much I appreciate it when someone believes in me and what I do so why not try and make that into a gift for someone you love? Are they self-employed or trying to start their own side business? Why not place an order for business cards for them? VistaPrint offers very affordable prices on business cards and think how much that would mean to someone who is trying to start their own business. You could pair that with a business card case that has been engraved with his initials which would make the gift even more personal.

Does the man in your life have a hobby that he is passionate about? Why not get him a book, a tool, or some items off of his wish list to support that hobby. Make these gifts more personal with a note that tells them that you are proud of them and give him a free pass to watch the children so he can go and pursue his hobby for the day… with no flack from you. Men value their alone time just as much as women so give him permission to go hit a few of those golf balls that are wrapped under the tree and enjoy some of your own quality time alone with the kids.

Give the Gift of Memories- Do you know something about the man in your life that you could use as a creative gift? Think of their favorite book as a child or think of a gift that he said he always wanted, but never got when he was young. Try and find those items on eBay and write a personal message to them about how you always remembered that this was special to them. You don’t have to pay to get a first-edition of the item, remember that the thought is there and he will
appreciate that you remembered that about him.

Another way to capture those memories is by finding an old picture that would have significant memories for him and have it printed up through a photo place and frame it for his desk at work. Maybe it is a picture of you with your father? Maybe it is a picture of you and your spouse on your honeymoon? Maybe it is a picture of your grandfather with his grandkids? Frame it and give it to them as a way of remembering all of those wonderful memories.

Whatever you do, just remember to make the gift as personal as you can. Wrap your gift creatively and tuck in a letter of what that person means to you. Everyone wants to feel loved and appreciated and nothing says appreciation like a little time invested into a personal gift. Don’t just give him the supplies to wash the car, give him a coupon that says it is good for one car wash done by you. Don’t just give him a magazine subscription. Buy one magazine to wrap that says that it is good for the subscription and then tag the magazine with sticky notes with funny notes from yourself. Don’t give him a generic coffee mug, have the children create one with you and fill it with his favorite snack. Make it as personal as possible and your gift will say a lot more than any expensive gift that is wrapped under the tree.

I hope these ideas have helped since this was a topic our readers really wanted to see!

Please share-what do you like to give to the men in your life? Have you done any of these ideas from this list?

Use What You Have: Handmade Advent Calendar

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

In the years past, we have always had a Christmas Jar of activities. Each day we would randomly draw from a set number of activities and enjoy a holiday activity together as a family. This year, our life with our two children has become increasingly busy and scheduled. We have two school schedules, extracurricular activities, homework, holiday programs, holiday family events, and so much more going on. Our life of leisure seems to have taken a detour and I have had to be more thoughtful in our approach towards carving time out for what we would hope to accomplish this year.

I wanted to create our own countdown to Christmas in a creative way, but I didn’t want to spend any money on it. I decided to use what I had to create our homemade Advent filled with fun activities and wanted to share with you what we created!

Homemade Advent Calendar

Supplies needed:

A large circle punch (in scrapbook supplies at craft store) or a jar or glass for tracing
Tape
Scrapbook or festive holiday gift wrap
Ribbon
Marker
2 Muffin Tins
A picture frame stand or a place to prop your finished tins

I began this project by punching out 48 circles. On half of these write the numbers 1-24 and on the other half you can write fun activities to do with your children in anticipation of the big day.

Stick your holiday activity folded up inside of each muffin tin and then attach the numbered circles to each individual muffin tin. Secure with tape on both sides to hold your activities in securely.

Break out your trusty calendar and jot down the activities for each day to remind yourself what you need to plan for and what supplies will need to be purchased to accomplish the activities.

Add a little festive ribbon to the top of your muffin tin. Display the muffin tin by using a picture frame stand or finding a sturdy wall to prop it up with. Have your child draw an activity each morning to complete as a family.

Our Activity List

1. Decorate the Christmas tree.
2. Big bubble baths with holiday music playing.
3. Going to the library to pick out holiday books.
4. Special popcorn and hot cocoa snack (possible visit for the tree lighting ceremony in town).
5. Going to a Christmas Concert.
6. Decorating gingerbread houses.
7. Make Christmas cards for our special friends.
8. Watch a holiday movie.
9. Color a holiday coloring page.
10. Bake Christmas cookies.
11. Go see holiday lights.
12. Go see Santa and a trolley ride through downtown.
13. Write a letter to Santa.
14. Pop popcorn & play a board game together.
15. Host an ornament decorating party.
16. Color a holiday picture.
17. Holiday party to attend.
18. Go to the dollar theater and see a movie.
19. Go see the Christmas lights.
20. Deliver holiday treats to our friends & the firefighters in town.
21. Big bubble bath with holiday music.
22. Open one gift early.
23. Watch a holiday movie.
24. Celebrate our family Christmas.

Total cost for this project was zero and very little money will be spent to do these activities together. The memories I hope to create with my children though, I hope those will be priceless!

Do you do an Advent calendar or have a special way your family celebrates the countdown to Christmas? I would love to hear your ideas!
