The notebook is arriving a little early today! Our town was hit with a storm that has knocked down our phone/internet lines so I am publishing early this evening since I will be without internet tomorrow! I hope you enjoy the notebook this week and I am so thankful for your comments and support on the site. Email response time has slowed and I promise to get back to everyone as soon as I can!  Thanks for your patience!

Frugal Tips for Throwing a Fabulous Birthday Party On a Budget

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

It is hard to believe that my little guy turned nine this year!  When people told me that the years would go by quickly, I did not believe them. It has seemed though that I blinked my eyes and he has grown up. As we do each year, I look forward to celebrating him and wanted to share with you the results of another fun patriotic party that we threw to celebrate Ethan and his awesomeness.

This year’s Walmart Moms challenge was to embrace the 4th of July using supplies from their store and I hope you will love these inexpensive additions that I added to our party this year.

I am lucky to have one child who has a 4th of July party every year and one child who has a Christmas birthday.  I always pick anything that is red for these parties because I know that they will serve double duty for our birthday bashes.

I hate to waste any money on paper products and decided this year I would make an investment into napkins for outdoor party. These bandanas in navy and red were the perfect solution for outdoor entertaining and a steal for just $1. I grabbed these over in the Women’s department by the purses and accessories for women. Honestly, if you have any party theme, they had everything from zebra print, to camouflage, to hot pink designs. I picked up sixteen (a $16 investment)  of these and rolled silverware sets in each one and put them in the glasses for easy grabbing.

Last year, I got these silverware sets for very little money at the wholesale club.  They aren’t the best quality, but they work so wonderfully for occasions like this. Thrift stores also sell silverware and you can often find bags of it very inexpensively. Rolling these into sets made it easier for everyone to grab what they needed and kept the line for the food moving a little quicker. When you are serving a large group, taking an hour to get everything set up like this will really pay off!

Our burger baskets from last year are still going strong and are always a hit at parties. I found these at our local restaurant supply store ($14.99 for 12) and I purchased one package of delicatessen paper ($4.99 for 500 sheets) for my family celebrations. These are not only used for our parties, but for pretty much any cookout our family does.  I couple these with small plates for appetizers or sides that just won’t fit in the baskets and an additional plate for the dessert table. These really have paid for themselves over and over again and I love a nod to anything retro.

Tissue paper pom poms are my new favorite thing to make. I made these in shades of pink for Emily’s Barbie birthday party this year and thought it would be fun to have these on hand for our patriotic parties too.  These cost $1 in tissue paper to make (I grabbed the tissue paper over by the Hallmark displays at our Walmart store) and can all be done in about thirty minutes.

Visit this tutorial to get the scoop on how to make these.  I did the same thing as I did with that tutorial, but cut the corners to a point instead of the rounded, more feminine corners that I did for my daughter’s party. I have packed these away to be brought out for next year’s party or (minus the blue) these could be added for a Valentine’s Day celebration with the addition of one of my pink pom poms from my daughter’s party.

I love a good red, white, and blue theme, but you have to appeal to what your kids desire too. Each year I let my children pick their own cake out of my stack of cookbooks and then I ask them what character they would like to go with for the year. This year, Ethan said he wanted a Bakugan cake. I visited the  toy section of our store and found these little guys for $10 to put on top. Whatever tops the cake, doubles as part of their birthday gift so these little guys were rinsed after their cake debut, and are now performing Bakugan battles in my son’s room.

The cake itself was a melted ice cream cake created from a cake mix and a pint of the birthday boy’s favorite ice cream. Tune in on Monday for that recipe and for the homemade chocolate marshmallow ganache that frosted the top. The Wilton sprinkles were leftover from last year’s party and worked perfectly again to add a little nod to the 4th of July theme.

Last year’s star garland was hung (free), a red tablecloth that I have had for about eight years was placed on the table (free), three flags from our party two years ago were nestled in red tissue paper and a glass apothecary jar that I had in our family room (free), and a navy bandana was angled beneath the cake for to add a little bit of color to the display ($1), with the three tissue paper pom poms hung from white ribbon above ($3).

The trifle that I shared with you is a new family favorite and I couldn’t wait to make it. This glass trifle bowl was only $6.97  at the store and will be used over and over again in our house. Everyone must have had the same idea as me because they were all out of these at our store. Thankfully, my girlfriend happened to be at another Walmart when I called, and she snagged one at her store and saved the day for me!  I can’t wait to try other desserts in this and even use this bowl for decorating in our house. Be sure to check out the recipe for the red, white, & blueberry trifle!

Two summers ago we bought one of those atrociously large water slides to put up in our backyard to keep the kids entertained. Bought on clearance towards the end of the summer, it has paid for itself in party entertainment and for days when I just want the kids to entertain themselves.  The past couple of parties the weather has not cooperated with this form of entertainment for our guests, but this year proved to be just the right amount of humidity and sun that we could put this up for lots of slides and fun with our cousins.  I hate putting it up, I hate taking it down…but anything that can keep the kids happy and entertained for hours on end seems like a fantastic idea for a party.

There is nothing catered at this party and I try to mix in a few old favorites with new recipes each year to our party menu. I work hard to make the party planning process as painless as possible. Everything is done in stages during the week so the last day is just a matter of pulling everything together.  The cake is baked and frozen until the big day, all ingredients are chopped in bags and ready to go, the decorations are hung the day before, I try to incorporate one recipe that can be thrown into our slow cooker, and I do my best to make the last day as fun as possible for me too!

A few of the standby recipes we used this year were our Perfectly Pulled Pork Sandwiches, our Pesto Pasta Salad, and our Birthday Party Punch. More recipes will be coming in the next two weeks!

Of course, no party would be complete without the birthday announcement on the door. The kids have really come to love this tradition of hanging our birthday balloon wreath so everyone knows that their special day has arrived. It isn’t a party without a wreath.. at least that is my philosophy. There is nothing that makes me happier than these simple traditions of fun, food, and family.

happy 9th birthday, ethan alexander!

I hope this gives you a few ideas for your own parties and would love to hear how you keep your parties fabulous and frugal!

Red, White, & Blueberry Trifle

Monday, July 11th, 2011

It was a busy week for our family last week as we prepared to celebrate my son’s ninth birthday.  Each year we throw a fun Fourth of July family party to celebrate his special day and bring our family together. You can see our good old-fashioned barbecue from last year and our patriotic party bash that we did two years ago.  For this year, tomorrow I will share with you more about the decor and how we pulled the different elements of our party together, but today I wanted to start with my favorite recipe from the birthday party.

For our birthdays, I like to offer two desserts for the celebration.  The first dessert is lovingly selected by the birthday boy/girl. They get to spend the day in my cookbooks and bookmark any cake that they want for their big day. The second is a cake or dessert that I have been wanting to try for another option for our guests. Everyone should get to have more than one dessert though, and plates were piled high this year!

One thing I have wanted to try is a trifle and I thought this would be a fun and delicious dessert, that would also be perfect for an outdoor barbecue. With berries in season and a store-bought angel food cake, this dish isn’t only affordable, but easy too!

The white chocolate pudding set this trifle apart from any other I have ever eaten because it adds a richness and unexpected layer into this berry trifle. Not only does this dish taste rich, but it is perhaps one of the lightest desserts I have ever made where I felt full and satisfied, while feeling like I indulged.  Of course anything with pudding, cake, and berries is a winner in my book.

This dessert went over just as well as the cake and offered a light ending to a delicious cookout. I would highly recommend giving this recipe a try for your next get together!

Recipe:

Red, White, & Blueberry Trifle

Ingredients:

  • 10 oz angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 pints strawberries, sliced
  • 2 pints blueberries

For the cream filling:

  • 6 tbsp fat-free sweetened condensed milk (I used Walmart Great Value brand)
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 1 package sugar-free white chocolate instant pudding mix (I opted for the sugar-filled version)
  • 12 oz fat-free frozen whipped topping, thawed

Directions:

Whisk the condensed milk and water in a bowl. Whisk in the pudding mix for 2 minutes. Let stand for 2 minutes or until soft-set; fold in the whipped topping.

Arrange half of the cake in the bottom of a 14-cup trifle dish. Sprinkle evenly with a layer of blueberries. Spread half of the cream mixture over the blueberries and gently spread. Top with a layer of strawberries. Layer the remaining cake cubes on top of the strawberries, then add more blueberries and top with the remaining cream mixture. Finish with the remaining strawberries and blueberries, arranging them in a pretty pattern. Cover and refrigerate at least one 1 hour.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 15 minutes

Serving Size: 14 servings

Coloring Your Hair At Home for Less: Natural Instincts Hair Color

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

There are two known secrets that my longtime readers will know about me. The first secret is that I am passionate about setting 30 day goals for myself to improve my productivity and overall health. I have tried 30 day goals,  from organizing to exercising,  and they seem to fit so well with my lifestyle.  The second known secret is that I am passionate about saving money and one of the ways I do that is by embracing many of my beauty routines at home.

When Clairol contacted me to see if I would be interested in sharing about their 30 Day Daily Refreshment Calendar that would challenge their readers to make easy changes in their nutrition, fitness, lifestyle, and beauty, I was so excited to participate because it fit perfectly with the way I choose to challenge myself in my own life.

Each day in July they will be sharing a new tip and challenging the Clairol Facebook community to refresh one of their daily routines.  They selected a few of their favorite online influencers to provide the tips and I got the opportunity to provide two tips on health and nutrition that will be shared during the month of July. Not only are they featuring me, but they will be featuring consumers, and others that make a difference in women’s lives and their own Clairol Color Director Marie Robinson who will be sharing refreshment tips for spicing up your usual routines.

I have been coloring my hair for years and I have always done it at home. I will admit that some things are worth paying for at my salon.  For example, I love to get my hair trimmed and professionally cut regularly. In full disclosure, my eyebrows are a sore sight to behold without professional care since I was one of the few chosen ones born without a natural arch. Coloring my hair at home though is one of those no-brainer ways of achieving beauty while spending a fifth of the price of a beauty salon. Even more than that though, my life is a whirlwind of activities with two children and I truly do not have two hours to spend each month to maintain my color at the salon. Luckily, with all of the color options available, it is easier than ever to try coloring you hair at home.

I always have used Clairol color on my hair because I get a very rich natural shade and I love that the products achieve the results I am after in a mere ten minutes.

I got the chance to test run the new Natural Instincts Vibrant collection on my hair this week. This new permanent hair color option can lighten your hair two to three levels and give you a big transformation. I prefer to stick with my natural hair color so I gave the hair color a test run with a bottle of their Medium Brown hair color instead of opting for a lighter color. Unfortunately,  my color had gotten really washed out from spending so much time in the sun and I could use a rich tone back on my hair so I was anxious to give this new hair color a try.

I applied the color to my hair and then waited the designated ten minutes.

Ten minutes later, I gave my hair a rinse and applied the conditioner. My hair looked and felt amazing after the hair color and I was shocked how quickly the color sets in. If you are looking for a dramatic change or just a richer tone to your natural hair, this product really works well in a record amount of time.

The best part though, is that both the Natural Instincts in the demi-permanent and the Natural Instincts Vibrant Collection come with a week two color refresher. Two weeks after, just when your hair color is starting to feel a little faded, you can apply the color refresher to replenish the color and make it look just like the day you colored it. Hello affordable salon color, goodbye salon prices!

If you are looking to take on a thirty day refreshment challenge, I encourage you to visit the Clairol Facebook page and check out a daily tip that you can implement each day during the month of July.  July is usually when I begin to get in a beauty, nutrition, & fitness rut, but it doesn’t have to be that way and I am looking forward to checking out these tips myself.

In the meantime, give Clairol a Like on Facebook, follow me on Twitter for my own tips for the daily refreshment challenge,  and enjoy a little refreshment in your own daily routines with their quick and easy tips to improve your life!

This is a sponsored post, and Natural Instincts has provided me with compensation for this post and to share about their Daily Refreshment Calendar. My participation is voluntary and opinions are always my own.

100 days of summer: homemade fudgesicles & key lime ice cream

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

It was another fun week of summer fun at the Clark house, although we didn’t get to many of our planned activities this week. The kids finished up their last week of swim lessons and we did a fun pirate-themed VBS at our church. Our children are so blessed to have such a fun church and VBS was stellar this year with tons of crafts and activities for the kids to do. We collapsed every night after swim lessons and a jam-packed evening of VBS activities.

I managed to squeeze in a Father’s Day date with my hubby, two birthday parties, a trip to a bounce house, attended a musical, had a slurpee celebration for finishing our swim lessons, two days at the pool, and one ice cream excursion. No wonder we didn’t have time for crafting this week!

For a fun Friday night treat this week, I made homemade fudgesicles for a fun way to finish off our pizza night together. These fudgesicles, from Smitten Kitchen,  were so creamy, rich, and delicious made with such a seemingly small amount of cocoa and chocolate chips, that you really can’t believe how rich the flavor is.  I doubled the recipe, but quickly realized that I did not need to double this for the amount of popsicle holders that we had. This makes a ton of popsicles and we still have another tray in the freezer for another weeknight treat.  My husband said they were just as good as the store-bought variety and I loved them even more.

Proving that I will gain a million pounds over the summer, I made this key lime ice cream from goodLife{eats}, guest posted by Jamie from My Baking Addiction and let me tell you,… it is perhaps one of the best bowls of homemade ice cream I have ever eaten. I decided to play with the recipe a little and used fat-free sweetened condensed milk, the zest from a lime, and regular lime juice since key lime juice proves to not be plentiful in my Midwestern store.  I find my father-in-law is the kind of guy that I want to work really hard to impress and I think our dinner, this dessert, and my present this year offered a triple wow factor that I will never be able to replicate again!

An Apron Full of Giveaways: $50 Container Store Gift Card Ends Today

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

This evening will end our $50 Container Store Gift Card giveaway and I have been hard at work at tackling my organizational challenges around our house. Last week I shared my pantry before and this week I wanted to share with you what a couple of hours of hard work equaled in our house.

In case you forgot what my pantry looked like before, here is the shot of of my pantry.

After spending an evening picking out exactly what I wanted in our pantry and two hours of tossing out food and organizing the chaos in our pantry, this is what it looks like after.

Everything is now much more organized and this is my pantry AFTER our grocery day so the cupboard is fully stocked. I moved my baking ingredients all together and bought an inexpensive spice rack shelf for items like baking powder, baking soda, cooking spray, salt, and a few commonly used spices. All other items were grouped together and expired items were tossed out.

The majority of my budget was spent on jars and containers to house some of the ingredients in our pantry. I like clean lines on my jars and the items that I might get mixed up have labels on the bottoms of the jar so I can make sure I am grabbing the right ingredient. The glass jars were on sale at our local Meijer for $4.99 so I used these for items like oatmeal, whole wheat flour, brown rice, and crackers.  For items that need a little more crunch and freshness, I got the lock-top containers for $14.99. I only got two of these though because I didn’t want to waste my entire budget on them.

The shelves were all lined with nonstick gripping contact paper. My shelves had taken a royal beating from the cans and my pizza stones so I got some contact paper in a neutral tone to line the bottoms of the shelves.

On the floor of my pantry, I purchased two baskets for $14.99 each. One basket is dedicated to juice boxes and the other is dedicated to all of the small random snacks that we might take to the pool with us that had been taking up an entire shelf of boxes in my pantry before. I buy “fun” snacks for the kids to take with them when we go on summer excursions and they can select one big snack or two small snacks from the basket to take to the pool each day. This has helped us a lot with concession stand requests and is a convenient way to grab a snack on the go.

We are still working on our garage entry, but I am proud of my newly renovated pantry and hope the changes inspire you

Today ends our giveaway with Apartment Guide to help you tidy up a cluttered space in your home. Through this partnership, I am giving away a $50 gift card to the Container Store that you can use for online shopping or at your local Container Store. Head on over to the giveaway to get your entry in!

Bubbly Raspberry Lemonade

Monday, June 27th, 2011

I love sweet and refreshing summertime drinks and this raspberry lemonade fit both of those bills perfectly.  As we celebrated Father’s Day last weekend with our family, I decided to make my Presto Pesto Pasta Con Pollo, a tossed salad, french bread, and I wanted a fun drink to round out the dinner.  This concoction was something I dreamed up out of a few items I found at our grocery store. A little pink lemonade, a little raspberry white grape juice, a lot of Sprite, and a little vodka (should you so choose). Each cup was filled with a few fresh raspberries and a colored straw, which my kids loved doing in preparation for the big dinner.

Tart, sweet, bubbly, fancy, and fun. Our dinner guests all agreed that these were magical. A second round was ordered all around and complimented our light summer dinner perfectly.

Recipe:

Bubbly Raspberry Lemonade

Ingredients:

1 (12 ounce) can frozen pink lemonade

1 (12 ounce) can frozen white grape raspberry juice

5 cans Sprite

1 can vodka (or you can substitute with an extra can of Sprite for a mocktail)

Juice of two limes

1 pint fresh raspberries

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together in a large pitcher.  Serve over ice and garnish with extra raspberries.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

Serving Size: 12 servings

What is your favorite summertime drink? Please feel free to share a link to those recipes!
