Roasted Garlic Hummus

Roasted Garlic Hummus from MomAdvice.com

*This post is sponsored by Wild Oats.  Thank you for supporting the companies that support this site!

I am so excited to be joining in as a contributor with Wild Oats this year and to get the opportunity to share with you about this company as an affordable organic offering at Walmart stores. I will be sharing ideas each month over on their blog as well as sharing a monthly offering here showcasing a fresh dish that you can create in your own kitchen that is delicious and gluten-free! Be sure to check out my first post on their blog sharing my delicious Baked Pecan Chicken Tenders recipe that is my new favorite salad topper.

I am sure everyone has a bucket list of things they would love to learn to create in their kitchen. Hummus has been one of those things that I usually buy pre-packaged that I have always thought to myself, “I bet you could make that…and cheaper too!” Inspired by the Wild Oats Chickpeas on my store shelves, I knew that this was a sign that I should attempt this dish in my kitchen.

Roasted Garlic Hummus from MomAdvice.com

Making homemade hummus is so ridiculously easy that I am embarrassed it took me years to finally attempt this in my kitchen. Hummus can be made in a variety of flavors, but one of the flavors I love the most is the garlic hummus. To take this pantry staple to another level though, I roasted it in my oven with a little olive oil to create a deeper, richer flavor. Once the garlic is roasted, it is just a matter of whirling these chickpeas in your food processor along with spices, tahini, lemon juice, and a little water until you get the consistency you are after.

Where the heck is tahini in the grocery aisle? Good question (says the girl who visited many aisles where tahini was not). It is typically in the international foods aisles of stores or can be found at international markets, but can also be found in weird and random places like next to the olives in you standard grocery store.  Really, ask your grocer if you aren’t sure and don’t let a little thing like I don’t know how to say tahini or I don’t know what tahini looks like stop you from making this amazing dish. The best part is how long tahini lasts in your fridge so you can buy this and enjoy hummus all summer long. And you will. Because once you try this recipe, you will realize that homemade hummus really IS the best hummus to eat and you will be stockpiling those cans of chickpeas so you can enjoy this easy appetizer anytime you get the craving for it. Amen.

Serves: 4
Once you try homemade hummus, you will never go back. Make this easy dish with canned chickpeas from Wild Oats.
Ingredients
  • 1 large head garlic
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp olive oil, divided
  • 1 (15 oz) can Wild Oats chickpeas, drained
  • 3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 3 Tbsp tahini
  • 1/2 tsp salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 – 3 Tbsp water
  • Chopped fresh parsley and red pepper flakes, for garnish
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut about 1/4-inch from top of garlic to expose tops of cloves for roasting.
  2. Place garlic head on a sheet of foil and drizzle 1 1/2 tsp olive oil evenly over top of garlic. Wrap foil up around garlic and roast 35 – 45 minutes until golden brown on a cookie sheet. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
  3. To your food processor add chick peas, lemon juice, tahini, salt and cumin then pulse mixture 2 minutes. Scrape down sides and bottom of food processor, add remaining 2 Tbsp olive oil, set aside 3 – 4 cloves of the garlic and add remaining (about 10 – 11) to food processor. Pulse 1 minute, then add water and pulse 1-2 minutes longer.
  4. Plate hummus, make indentation in center and add 1 – 2 Tbsp more olive oil to taste (optional), then chop remaining roasted garlic cloves and sprinkle over top, sprinkle with parsley and red pepper flakes.
  5. Serve with fresh veggies or gluten-free crackers. Store in refrigerator in an airtight container.

What is one dish that has been on your cooking bucket list? Anything you have tried with success that you were surprised about! Feel free to share here!

It’s The 3 Little Things (With Ashley): Mad Money Skills, Pearly Whites, & Gluten-Free Pancakes

It's the 3 Little Things

Happy Friday, friends! It’s a happy Friday, indeed, for this girl as I am preparing for an overnight with my two best friends from my church camp days in Chicago. I get to travel a lot for work, but a trip just for me is a rarity and I’m so excited. I’m also happy that our bathroom renovations are finally done!  This week has been a mad scramble to get back on track with my work since my kiddos were on Spring Break. I am sure, just like every other mom, you understand the juggle struggle that happens as the school year comes to a close. Every day my mantra is, “I think I can, I think I can.”

Today we have Ashley from A Little Something Wonderful sharing a few things that are making her happy this week! Ashley is a frequent commenter on here and also a 3 things enthusiast. How lucky am I to get to share her list today? VERY lucky!

If you are interested in being a guest poster on the 3 little things, send over a list of your 3 favorites and why to amy@momadvice.com and I will share them in the upcoming weeks!

Let’s peek at Ashley’s favorites today!

Cash Envelope System

Cash Envelope System Wallet

My husband and I recently took Dave Ramsey’s course, Financial Peace University.  In addition to doing a monthly budget, we now also follow his recommendation for paying cash for many purchases.  While paying for cash has really transformed our budget and allowed us to save money and pay off debt every month, I was not a fan of the envelopes.  There was no place to keep change and they were flimsy.  Enter my favorite new wallet from Melissa’s etsy shop, A Time for Everything.  This wallet has amazing tabs to help divide and organize your cash into categories of spending (groceries, gas, etc.).  There is a separate zipper pocket for change, and pockets for cards, a driver’s license, and receipts.

Essential Oxygen Brushing Rinse
I have a serious phobia of the dentist that causes me to take fanatical care of my oral health.  I recently found this amazing mouthwash that I have been loving lately.  Essential Oxygen Brushing Rinse is described as part mouthwash, part toothpaste.  It works to repair and prevent a whole host of oral issues including gum pockets and receding gums, tooth sensitivity, bad breath, tartar, canker sores and toxic morning mouth.  It does all of this while also naturally whitening your teeth.  Free of harmful chemicals this brushing rinse also contains essential oils (which I love!).  This mouthwash is not overpowering and does not leave a weird aftertaste in your mouth.  After using it, your mouth just feels clean.
Birch Benders Pancake & Waffle Mix

Birch Bender Gluten Free Pancake and Waffle Mix

My husband loves pancakes on the weekends.  I was always so grouchy about making them because it meant mixing up a gluten free flour mix and creating pancakes from scratch.  I wouldn’t mind this except the pancakes often weren’t very good–either a weird flavor or a strange consistency–the joys of gluten free baking!  Last weekend while shopping at Whole Foods we saw this new to us product on the shelves and decided to give it a try–all you do is add water and cook up your flap jacks.  These were so delicious that I actually went back to double check the bag to confirm that they were in fact gluten free.  I can not recommend this mix enough!!!

How fun was that list this week? I am so excited to share more great ideas from you all in the weeks to come! Thank you, Ashley, for generously sharing the happy today!

In my world… Capsule Wardrobe Ideas (current capsule HERE).  The April switch is one sweater out and silky floral pants in for the month. I think all sweaters are officially out of the wardrobe now. Did you get the memo, Indiana?  Are you following me on Instagram? I post 4 outfits each week!

The DIY Laundry: Detergent & Fabric Softener Sheets

The DIY Laundry-Detergent and Softener Sheets

Have you ever thought about making your own laundry detergent and dryer sheets? While it’s not specifically around our M Challenge of Loving Your Home, thinking about our home made me think about the DIY projects that have helped to create a better environment for my family – one of which is our DIY Laundry! I love the control and confidence I have in making our own laundry essentials – it’s better for the environment and results in major savings with minimal time invested.

Ready to make your own? Here’s a little more on each project with a link to the original full article where you’ll find complete tutorials with photos and recipes:

DIY Fabric Softener Sheets

DIY Fabric Softener Sheets

I have been making my own DIY fabric softener sheets for years – it’s an easy process that will stretch your softener further with nothing to throw away! Plus, they actually perform better than putting fabric softener in your washer compartment and you don’t have to worry about any staining on your fabrics.

They are also reusable – you can use each sheet about 20 times before they lose their effectiveness. But then it’s an easy step to repeat the process!

Go here for the steps to make your own fabric softener sheets – plus tips on other options if you don’t want to use commercial fabric softener:

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Making homemade detergent is easier than you might think and the cost comparison makes it worth the small amount of effort required. It’s naturally low-sudsing, making it perfect for using with HE washing machines and because it contains zero phosphates or fillers, it’s septic-friendly as well.

This homemade detergent is made up of three ingredients: Fels-Naptha (or Ivory Soap), Washing Soda, and Borax, which can be bought for around $8.00 total. Dividing the total materials required to make one batch of soap (the soap bar and 1 c. each of the remaining ingredients) equals a cost of $1.80-$1.90 for a batch. At one to two tablespoons per load, it comes in at around $.05, compared to $0.17-.0.21 per load of name brand detergents.

It also takes less time than you may think: I was able to make a triple batch of this soap in about fifteen minutes (and that is along with taking pictures for this tutorial). The real time-consuming process of it is grating the soap, but if you have a food processor, that can be accomplished in no time at all!

Go here for a picture tutorial of how to make your own laundry detergent, including photos of all the ingredients (and where to find them):

Do you make any laundry items for your home? Have you made either of these after the original postings?

DIY Lampshade Ideas

Tuesday, April 14th, 2015

DIY Lampshade Ideas from MomAdvice.com

One of the quickest ways to update a room is to spruce up a lamp in your home and today I wanted to show you some easy and affordable ways to transform a lampshade from Goodwill.

I love these ideas so much, in fact, that I have plans to add a new lamp or two to our space now for Spring!

I hope you will be as inspired as I am by these bloggers and their incredible lampshade makeovers.

Add a Fun Print With Leggings

You can find a pair of leggings in just about any pattern or color combination right now at just about any store.
Consider snagging a pair of inexpensive leggings and using this material to stretch over a lampshade in your house to add a trendy color or pattern to your home without a big financial commitment.

Add an Adorable Ping Pong Detail

I am a big fan of ping pong craft ideas and love this detail on a lampshade.

You can use fabric paints to match a room in your home and then glue on this three dimensional detail for a fun look for any game room.

Get the scoop on this DIY Ping Pong Lampshade from I Love to Create here.

Go Industrial

Your local thrift store is the perfect place to hunt for lampshades that have beautiful bones underneath their fabric exterior.
A simple removal of the fabric can create a beautiful industrial lampshade and the edition of an Edison bulb really completes the look on this easy DIY project.
Check out this industrial lampshade makeover on Bless’er House.

Add a Fabric Detail

If you aren’t a fan of the industrial look, but have a great lampshade base to work with, consider adding your own unique touches with scraps of fabric.
If you are a sewer, you may have a mystery bag of materials to work with to create this adorable scrappy fabric lampshade for a corner in your craft room like Pen’s Nook!

Add a Feminine Touch

Nothing says Spring like floral and that is why I love this fabric flower lampshade.
With simple fabric circles, glue, and a little shaping, this is the perfect craft to work on while binge-watching all of your favorite shows on television.
Since you are covering the entire lampshade in flowers, it can really breathe life into a lampshade that may have seen better days thanks to a camouflaging of rosettes.

Add a Unique Embroidered Touch

I love, love, love the look of embroidery and this DIY Constellation Lampshade from Martha Stewart is jaw-droppingly awesome.

I have been seeing constellation projects popping up on table runners and wall murals, but have fallen in love with this lampshade for my small home.

If you can’t find a navy lampshade for your project, consider covering it in navy leggings (as I showed you in our first project listed here) or hunt through the t-shirt section of a thrift shop for the perfect navy shirt to use!

What are some ways you have transformed a lampshade?

Baked Pecan Chicken Tenders

Monday, April 13th, 2015

Pecan-Chicken-Tenders.Header

Looking for a fresh new idea for topping those summer salads? Today I am sharing an easy recipe for Baked Pecan Chicken Tenders that you can even make-ahead and freeze for your busy week over at the Wild Oats blog!

I’m so excited to be joining as a contributor at the Wild Oats blog this year to share fresh & fun dishes for busy families. I’m not sure if you have heard of the product line before, but it is the new organic line available at your local Walmart store. I agreed to the partnership because I know that organic food is important to many of you, but I also understand how difficult it can be to eat organic on a budget. It is the two things that our family struggles with too. When Wild Oats presented at a meeting that I attended for Walmart, their enthusiasm for their products and the pride they took in them was, frankly, contagious. When they reached out to me, I knew it would be a great partnership to encourage healthy eating.  I also think you will be pleased with the price point on these products when you browse the grocery aisles and I want to show you ways to use these affordable pantry staples in a new way you might not have thought of before!

I will be sharing an idea on their blog once a month and one idea on my blog! I hope you will love these recipe creations as much as I do. The bonus is that each of these dishes will also be gluten-free! Yay!

Now that you have heard why I am so excited about this, be sure to head over this delicious Baked Pecan Chicken Tenders recipe!

It's the 3 Little Things

I am overwhelmed with the response from opening up our 3 Little Things to you all and can’t wait to start sharing all of these fun lists from some of my favorite people! If you are interested in being a guest poster on the 3 little things, send over a list of your 3 favorites and why to amy@momadvice.com and I will share them in the upcoming weeks!

Today I have a guest happy list from one of my favorite commenters and supporters of MomAdvice, Lisa Whitney! She doesn’t  have a blog but reads several  with her morning cup of coffee and she says that this is one of her favorite parts of the day. She is a wife, mom of the sweetest 7-year old little boy and a Registered Dietitian in Reno, NV. She also happens to leave the BEST lists each week in our comments section so I am thrilled she offered to share another one today!

Let’s peek at a few of Lisa’s favorites today!

Lush Brightside Bubble Bar

Brightside Bubble Bar (from Lush)

I don’t have a Lush nearby so when we travel and see a store I can never resist picking up a bath bomb or my favorite facial (chocolate cupcake!). This time we decided to try something new, the brightside bubble bar. The salesperson suggested I use half the bar on one bath. I cut mine in thirds and one section made a massive amount of bubbles. I cut back even more to make the bar last longer when I realized that breaking off just the smallest bit is still just as luxurious. The smell is like an orange creamsicle and it leaves the bath a beautiful bright orange (without leaving an awful film on the tub).

Mary-Lou Manizer

Mary-Lou Manizer

I am more into makeup now than I was as a teenager and love discovering new things. This highlighter is so beautiful, it gives my face a shimmery sun-kissed glow. Bonus, I ordered mine from Amazon and it came with the softest brush for just a couple dollars more.

Trader Joe's Pound Plus Dark Chocolate Bar

Trader Joe’s Pound Plus Dark Chocolate Bars

Trader Joe’s sells these huge bars for only $4.99. The bar is broken into several thick little blocks, one is the perfect after-meal treat. They come in several flavors, my favorite being the 72% dark chocolate. Since a high-quality single dark chocolate bar sells for $3-5 this is a bargain which amazingly lasts for a very long time. You can bake with it also although I have not done so. I don’t live near an Aldi anymore but I used to and remember they had something similar.

How fun was that list this week? I am so excited to share more great ideas from you all in the weeks to come! Thank you, Lisa, for generously sharing the happy today!

In my world… Capsule Wardrobe Ideas (current capsule HERE).  The April steal is my white blazer in the lower right corner from thredUP. Are you following me on Instagram? I post 4 outfits each week!

Happy Easter 2015 from the Clark Family

We hope your family had a Happy Easter! I’m pretty proud of my little crew this year. I don’t know about you, but I was scrambling until the last minute gathering Easter finery for the kids and stuff for their baskets. After some last minute shopping and a heck of a lot of ironing (oh, and a lot of leg make-up…ahem), I was so proud how we shined up this year.

As a side note, the doctor confirmed that my son is now beating me by an inch, confirming that he is now officially taller than me. As many of you have seen him grow up from the age of 1 on this site and now (almost) 13 (STOP IT), this is pretty darn shocking to me. I am now rocking the heels and bossing him around the house like usual!

Finally, here is a little LOL that I was busting up over (hat tip to Whoorl for finding this one).  What?  People don’t care when you leave FB? No way! Ha!  Happy Friday, friends! xoxo

Love Your Home Tour (With A.R. Drew)

Love Your Home Tour (With A.R. Drew)

One of my favorite features on Design Mom is her Living With Kids series. I am constantly bookmarking ideas for my own space after seeing the spaces that these homeowners create.  As a DIY-er, I appreciate all the hard work and hours that go into truly making a space your own and since we are tackling the Love the Home You Have series this month, I thought it would be fun to take you on a tour of someone’s home who has truly personalized her space.

You see, my friends are incredible designers of their spaces and I am sure there is something you have done in your own home that is incredibly YOU. If you are interested in sharing a space with me, I’d love to feature it! Just take some pictures and explain what you did and email them to amy@momadvice.com.  I would love to show off a corner in your home too that has helped you fall in love with the home you have.

Love Your Home Tour (With A.R. Drew)

Today we are touring Anna’s home. I actually bombarded her at the gym when she posted pictures of her incredible step makeover. I begged to look at it and photograph it. One thing lead to another and somehow not only am I touring her space, but we are karaoking until the wee hours of the morning. She’s that kind of person. I’m that kind of person. Things just move rather quickly in our worlds.

Anna Drew (A.R. Drew) is an incredibly gifted painter who not only paints beautiful artwork, but shares her love of painting with others by teaching art classes to children in her own home and gives to her community through a new idea she has had called #projectblankspace. She’s been working with youth at the Center for the Homeless because, with her background as a therapist, she knows the therapeutic abilities that art can bring to our lives. She makes beautiful pieces for people’s homes and has a personality as big as her paintings.

I brought my camera so let’s take a virtual tour of Anna’s beautiful space today!

Love Your Home Tour (With A.R. Drew)

Love Your Home Tour (With A.R. Drew)

The first thing you see when you walk into this space are these incredible steps.  With the beautiful white canvas around them, your eye gravitates towards these gorgeous navy steps. This is one of their proudest DIY’s that she and Brian did.
Love Your Home Tour (With A.R. Drew)

To create this staircase they ripped out their carpet and then ripped out one million staples (direct quote). They then used wood-filler to fill in the grain and sanded, then repeated this process three times. Next they primed with an oil-based bonding primer, added rope molding on the thread edge front and side using a miter saw and nail gun, and finished using Bondo to fill in any perfections.

Next they painted three times with the oil paint (they did have it deglossed at the paint store to have them look slightly matte and be less slippery) and added  then wallpaper as their finishing touch to this makeover. The couple said that it  took 5 or 6 weeks with the walls and painting wainscoting and about 80 hours of time, in total.

They admit that it was a ton of work, but both agree that the work paid off.

For those trying to replicate this project the step riser paint color is Naval (from Sherwin Williams) and the wainscotting is Westhighland White (also from Sherwin Williams). The wallpaper used for this project was also from Sherwin Williams and they say it cost approximately $160 for 3 double rolls, but said it only took 3 single rolls. The install cost approximately $100.

Love Your Home Tour (With A.R. Drew)

I love how Anna has her beautiful art displayed up the stairs to personalize this space. What could be more personal than your own artwork? The eye is naturally drawn to these paintings with the fresh crisp paint they have chosen.

The cabinets were painted a fresh white and the kitchen was painted the most lovely shade in Stratton Blue (from Benjamin Moore). I’m such a fan of these vintage theater seats that line the wall and this cool satellite photo of San Francisco, both affordable finds from thrifting and antiquing.

Anna’s studio is so light-filled that I had a hard time taking photos in here, which is just the kind of bright and lovely space you would want as an artist to create your work. Not only is this her space, but it is a communal space that she shares art with kids and teaches them to release their own inner artists. In every corner there is something beautiful to look at and it is one of my favorite spaces in their home.

The home is spacious and they had a room that they decided to transform into Anna’s own dreamy closet, complete with a seating area so she can have friends (or her awesome photographer sister) over to gab while they try on clothes. The wall was wallpapered with wallpaper from Target (who knew?) and the ladder and the vanity were created using thrift store items and painted to create this cohesive set. They had someone install this thrifted ladder to really complete the space.

I told her about my capsule wardrobe project and she was like, “No.”

Now I know who to borrow clothes from when I have an event. I kind of want to drag my 33-pieces and set up shop right in here.

Love Your Home Tour (With A.R. Drew)

I hope you enjoyed this home tour and please, please give A.R. Drew a LIKE on Facebook. She’s an incredible artist (who also teaches locally)  and that is one way we can thank her for this beautiful home tour and inspiration! What is your favorite spot in this space?
