The Great Believers is one of the most powerful books I’ve ever read about the AIDS crisis and its ripple effects on those left behind.

Makkai’s layered, dual-timeline story moves between 1980s Chicago and 2015 Paris, tracing the lives of a tight-knit group of friends caught in the throes of the AIDS crisis and its legacy.

In the past, Yale Tishman navigates friendship and loss amid a community under siege, while in the present, he searches for Nico, a friend lost to both time and tragedy.  

Makkai’s masterful dual-timeline storytelling illuminates the resilience of the human heart and the bonds of chosen family during this time in history.

This young adult book achingly explores the complexity of first loves. Told in alternating chapters by a twin sister and brother—one narrating the events as they unfold and the other reflecting three years later- this offers readers a unique dual-timeline perspective.

Nelson's writing evokes vivid imagery that feels like watching a painting come to life, especially through the eyes of the artistic Noah, whose descriptions are incredibly visual.

I laughed and cried through the pages of this book, which surprised me in so many ways. I've never encountered a writer quite like Nelson before, and I became a forever fan after reading this story.
