Everywhere I turn, I am seeing green smoothie recipes. Green smoothies have filled my blog reader and my Pinterest wall. My girlfriend first jumped on the green smoothie bandwagon and I shortly followed behind her. We would chat in the mornings, trying different fruits, different ratios, and then deciding the order that everything should go into the blender for the perfectly blended drink. Yes, our conversations tend to be quite fascinating only to us. That being said, I became hooked on green smoothies and I feel so much better about my day if I have had one of these in the morning.
That being said, I did not want to spend our entire grocery budget on green smoothie ingredients or run from store to store to get ingredients that I couldn’t find at my usual store. Sure, I want to be healthy, but I also like to stay under my grocery budget. I decided to create my own version of this smoothie using ingredients I could find at ALDI Supermarket.
I always hate to list prices for items because they can become out-of-date by tomorrow, but I do want to share with you the rough cost of the items I found at the store.
Flat Leaf Spinach (9 ounces)- $1.69
Vanilla Soy Milk (half gallon)- $2.39
Mandarin Oranges (3 pounds)- $2.49
Fage Greek Yogurt (17.6 ounces)- $1.99
Bananas- $.45 per pound
Frozen Strawberries (2 pounds)- $3.49
It is hard to estimate the price per smoothie because items like the yogurt go quickly while other ingredients (like the fruit) can last for a couple of weeks for me. Regardless, I love that I can make one of these green smoothie creations on my budget and not have to shop for more obscure or expensive ingredients.
Why would anyone ever want to drink a green smoothie? It is packed full of fruits and vegetables that can be the perfect workout treat or a fun way to start your day. I worried that the smoothies would taste like spinach, but the spinach blends right into the fruits and I can’t taste it all once it has been blended well. As a busy mom trying to get my kids on the bus every morning, I don’t make eating breakfast a priority. Doesn’t coffee count as a healthy breakfast? This smoothie is helping me do better about putting good things in my body while we are getting ready for the day.
A few years ago, I decided to make the investment into a blender that would really last after burning up my blender every summer making the kids slushies and other frozen treats. My Krups blender is going on its third year with me and has been one of the wisest investments for smoothie creations in my kitchen. If you use your blender often, I encourage you to get one that has some power behind it especially when blending ice and frozen fruits like this smoothie.
After trying different variations of layering, I find the spinach pulls in the best when it rests in the middle. On the bottom I pour my soy milk, my Greek yogurt, my frozen strawberries, and my ice. Next I put in my layer of spinach. I add a banana and a segmented orange or clementine to the top. This seems to be the best technique for smooth spinach blending for me. You may want to experiment in your own blender and see what works best for you.
This smoothie makes a really giant smoothie for me and one small smoothie for my daughter for our breakfast in the morning. When my daughter brought home her, “sh” words from her kindergarten class, my husband handed it to me and proclaimed that I have officially brainwashed my children. She thinks her green smoothie is a “sh…ake.”
I love this child.
You will love this smoothie. I hope it transforms your morning as much as it has transformed mine!
- 1 cup vanilla soy milk
- ½ cup plain or vanilla Greek yogurt
- 4 ice cubes
- 5 frozen strawberries
- 2 cups fresh spinach
- ½ a banana
- 1 orange or clementine, peeled and segmented
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional, but can help add sweetness)
- Place ingredients in your blender as listed.
- Pulse or use the ice crush feature on your blender to break down the ice and frozen fruit.
- Blend well.
Have you jumped on the green smoothie bandwagon? What are your tricks and ingredients for making your signature green smoothie?

This morning I made my daughter (frozen) spinach, banana and milk w/a drop of honey. She drank it right up! Easy and all stuff I had in my freezer!

You can’t beat that! What a great idea to use the frozen spinach instead!

I just use my immersion blender. So I like frozen spinach better than fresh bc it’s mushier. I can easily sneak in a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar too!

That is a great idea! I will have to remember that if I ever make one just for myself!

I have been doing greek yogurt, coconut milk (daughter allergic to soy), frozen banana, Tbsp of sunflower seed butter (daughter allergic to peanuts) and spinach. It tastes like a pb banana shake.

I am lactose intolerant, but my tummy can handle the Greek yogurt. Using the soy milk has helped me so I love the idea of using the coconut milk for families that have allergies to the soy. Thank you so much for sharing!

We love green smoothies at our house. I have found that I need to blend the spinach and milk (I use regular or organic whole milk) together first to get the spinach really smooth. Then I add the rest of the ingredients (pretty similar to yours) on top and blend away, I love adding a banana because I think it adds sweetness without having to add any sweetener, and I also think it helps the smoothie be creamier – more like a shake. My kids call them shakes too! I love that they think that something so healthy for them is a treat!

Such great ideas, Emily. I agree, the spinach has to be in just the right spot to blend in well. Once you figure that out though, you have solved half the battle
Thanks so much for your comment today!

We love these too! Nobody can believe that all my kids love green smoothies. I use kale or spinach, frozen berries (some from the Ranch this summer!), and bananas with cold water.
We like trying new combinations and seeing what color our smoothie turns out. We’ve ending up with some brown ones, but they still taste good.

I agree, sometimes it isn’t as easy to achieve the full green color, but who cares, as long as it tastes yummy! I have not tried making them with water- I will have to give that a shot. Thanks so much for sharing, Rachel!

Just this past weekend I discovered a delicious new smoothie recipe on Pinterest and made a slight variation. It’s a Green Julius, based off of my favorite drink of all time – The Orange Julius. It calls for fresh spinach, milk, clementines & vanilla. I was chomping at the bit to make it but didn’t have fresh oranges of any kind. I used a couple of TBSP of frozen OJ concentrate… It is now my family’s newest favorite smoothie recipe (I have a tween & teen.)
Thanks for the great tip about putting the spinach in the middle. I find that sometimes my blender has a hard time breaking down all the spinach sometimes.
LOVE your daughter’s school work! How cute! My kids tend to differentiate smoothie and shake by whether it contains milk or not. If it’s all fruit and water then it’s a smoothie. To me, a shake is made up of mostly milk with a serving of one fruit thrown in.
Thanks for sharing your great recipe! I can’t get enough green smoothies!

We make green (and other smoothies) daily. I keep the blender on the counter because we use it so often!!! My favorite green smoothie is posted here: http://behealthybehappywellness.com/blog/2012/01/frugal-fridays-smoothie-bar
It has kale in it, which is a nice alternative to spinach.

Thank you so much for this fabulous idea too, Pam! We are just starting to really add more kale into our diet so I appreciate you sharing this link!

I apparently have brainwashed my children too, because my 3 yo was actually disappointed that the last time I made them smoothies I didn’t have any spinach – they were JUST fruit, sadly; upon seeing a bagged salad mix of baby field greens, the same 3 yo said hopefully, “are we having smoothies for dinner?!”
I make my own greek-ish yogurt and blend it with spinach, milk, banana, frozen strawberries, and a spoonful of frozen apple juice concentrate, plus water to thin it if necessary. My 17 month old would probably down the entire quart if I let him (but oh, the diapers later… =]). I have also tossed in mango chunks when I have them, which adds a nice tropical touch.

Ha! Oh, I simply cannot imagine the diapers after all of this green loveliness, but that is totally cracking me up that my kids are not the only ones being brainwashed
Thanks for the smile today, Susan!!

Food for thought: It’s so awesome that you and your family are choosing such healthy foods, but I really have to challenge you to consider organic strawberries – they may cost more where you shop (unless you luckily live near a Trader Joes!) but by paying more you are choosing not to feed yourself and your kids such chemicals as Methyl Iodide, Pyraclostrobin and Tetrahydrophthalimide. And strawberries are a fruit that absorb the chemicals they are treated with; you can’t wash them off. Not that you would with frozen strawberries anyway. Doesn’t that make you mad?! Anyway, LOVE your site! Thanks

I just had my first green smoothie last week and I was seriously amazed at how much spinach I was able to pack in there without it tasting at all like any sort of salad!
I can tolerate bananas, but I don’t love them, so I’m happy to see that Julius smoothie that someone else shared above. Now, I just need to replenish my spinach supply and start blending!

You can definitely omit that banana, Marybeth. I think it just adds a bit of creaminess, but you could even get a little creaminess with avocado or a peanut butter addition. Have a great time making your smoothies!!

Green smoothies are the only way I can get my 2 yo to eat any green vegetable. We use the following recipe. I’ve been making it so long I no longer measure.
Handfull of frozen mango (If I have it, can be left out)
handfull of frozen pineapple (extra if you are not using the mango, I buy Aldi’s)
1 banana (frozen or not, doesn’t matter)
6-8 oz of orange juice
spinach or kale (I alternate depending on what I have, pack it in)
Makes 2-3 cups
My 2 yo LOVES it!
