We really put our blender to work in the summer and I wanted to share with you one of my kid’s favorite treats for our homemade pizza night.
This is another fantastic recipe that I found on Hillbilly Housewife called, “Magic Milkshakes.” To me, this recipe tastes just like a Wendy’s Frosty with a fantastic balance of chocolate, creaminess, and the spoonable or sippable goodness that makes them one of my favorite summertime treats.
The magical component about them is that there is no ice cream in this yummy milkshake and that all the ingredients can be found in your cupboards. I adore recipes that can be whipped up as a fun surprise without the need to run to the store.
If you haven’t tried this recipe before, do not let another summer pass you by without putting this into your rotation! These are inexpensive, delicious, and will score coolest mom every points!
Homemade Wendy’s Frosty (The Magic Milkshake courtesy of Hillbilly Housewife)
1-1/2 to 2 cups ice water
1-1/2 cups nonfat dry milk powder
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 to 1-1/2 trays of ice cubes, as much as you can spare
2 tablespoons corn oil plus a 5-second squirt of non-stick spray for emulsification purpose (I substitute the corn oil with canola oil & you can read her notes on why you need that non-stick spray)
Place all of the ingredients into the blender, including the oil and the non-stick spray. Use less water for thicker milk shakes and more water for shakes that are easy on your blender motor. The blender should be about 3/4’s full. Place the lid on. Process for a full 2 minutes. Pour into cups and serve. Makes 4 – 12oz servings.

Isn't it awesome. My oldest son is "in charge" of this recipe and we have all the ingredients in a spot just for him.
Haven't done it in awhile….must remind him. (we now add just a dash of cappuccino mix to give it an added punch.

This leads me to a question.. is dry milk powder really cheaper than regular milk these days? It seems like last I priced it, it's kinda expensive. We also buy organic milk and I haven't seen organic milk powder anywhere local. What are your thoughts? Do you keep on hand for certain recipes or is it a staple in your home?

Mama K- I am thinking that it depends a lot on where you live. Being in Indiana, milk is extremely cheap right now. We can get milk for less than $2 a gallon. I just keep the dry milk on hand for this recipe, dried mixes that I make for hot drinks (hot cocoa, vanilla chai tea), and to add in my bread machine. I wouldn't use it normally, but I will say it is a fantastic ingredient to keep on hand when you haven't been to the store in awhile and you need milk for a recipe.
I think what makes the dried milk a cheaper alternative in this recipe is that it is cheaper than ice cream
Making four shakes of that size would require quite a bit of ice cream so I think it is a frugal alternative in this case.

We only have powdered milk available to us here. All of the recipes that I know of that call for powdered milk specify "non-fat" but the only kind available here is 'full cream' which is quite the opposite of non-fat. Anyone know if this is going to make any difference in recipes?

Ali- I don't think that will alter your recipe at all, just the fat content. You will probably have a richer milkshake than someone using the nonfat. I am sure your shakes will taste better

As others have said, regular milk, is cheaper in my area than dried. Is there any way to use regular milk here? I'm not against buying the powder, as it would be cheaper (and less caloric) than going to Wendy's! LOL But hmm, I only have some butter flavored nonstick spray on hand. We don't buy that stuff, but use a pump sprayer without the chemicals. hehe

Helen- I haven't tried using regular milk before, but I think that with the ratio of powdered milk to water that this is what makes them creamy and milkshake like. It would be difficult to achieve and still get that ice cream feel without it. If you have any success, please let me know!
I have tried it without the spray and it does work, it just isn't as frothy tasting.

One thing that we have as a treat in the summer is root beer floats. It is simple and easy and it doesn't require getting anything dirty except for an ice cream scoop! My toddler doesn't get to drink pop on a regular basis (only for special occasions) so this drink is a real treat for her

I was happy to run across this recipe. We also usually have an ice cream treat with our Friday Pizza nights. My daughter and I recently tried Wendy's Twisted Coffee Toffee Frosty and it was great. I may have to do some experimenting!

Who knows what I did wrong, but when I tried this last summer it was a complete disaster! My family won't even let me try again, so instead we buy the big tubs of lowfat vanilla frozen yogurt from Kroger for $3.33 and make our milkshakes that way.

Steph- Oh no!! I wonder what happened? I have never had them not turn out. They are runnier sometimes if I don't add as much ice, but that is the only thing I have had happen. Maybe you will have to try it some afternoon when your hubby doesn't know

Well, how much powder to water when you make a glass of milk, per the box? I'm betting I could use (or boil down) evaporated milk instead of running out for powdered!

Helen- The box says 1/3 cup powdered milk to 1 cup water to make 8 ounces of milk. Hope that helps!

I've had it on the brain to break out the blender and use it some more this summer. I was thinking some good smoothie drinks for breakfast, but a frosty for dessert would def. earn me "coolest mom ever" points.

Great news in Pumpkin Shake-land! The Magic Milkshake recipe works to make a pumpkin shake!! I just decreased the oil a little and put a couple of heaping tablespoons of canned pumpkin and a generous dash of pumpkin pie spice and blended it up (followed the rest of the recipe as written).
