My daughter has an unbelievable collection of leggings that we have relied upon all year, since she loves wearing a dress almost every day. Now that summer season is finally here, our legging collection has gotten a little short and a little worn out. I hated to give these a toss though and just knew there had to be a good purpose to these.
With a set of scissors, I cut these off just below the knee. Now we have a perfect pair of shorts that can be worn underneath our sun dresses! Leggings that were too short and leggings with worn out knees, have a fresh new purpose in our wardrobe.
Cute, chic, ladylike, and frugal.

Love it! My son has a pair of ripped jeans to which I think I’ll apply this idea; very useful indeed.
Thanks!

We have a few pairs of those laying around our house too, Barbara! Great idea!

Stretchy knit fabric doesn’t ravel so it won’t need any hemming. Easy peasy!

I agree- this is the first time I have done that! So easy and a great way to repurpose those worn out leggings. Have a wonderful day, Sally!

I was talking to a mom at a yard sale last week. She cut off leggings for under dresses because they’re more form fitting than shorts for under skirts.
Smart.

That is exactly what we are doing! It keeps my daughter lady-like in the summer without adding a lot of bulk underneath! We love them just for that purpose!

My “little girl” is 22 and a mommy herself now, but I remember her love of wearing dresses all the time. I often made dresses for her and I always got extra fabric to make some little shorts, but I like this even better-much less bulk!
It’s not a tip I need any longer, but I am definitely going to pass it on to those with little girls!

I have to add-I’m itching to run to the fabric store and get some cute stretch lace to zigzag onto the bottoms of those cut off leggings! Maybe a wee button with a teensy ribbon bow, or a rosette…

Oh, that would be cute! I am very lazy when it comes to sewing. I know the possibilities are endless with this little hack. Those are wonderful ideas, Colleen! Thanks so much for your comment!

Great tip! I think I’m actually going to use this tip for myself because my legging collection is embarrassingly extensive and I pretty much stick to dresses in the summer. But now that I’m a mommy, I’m rolling in the grass and crawling through the sandbox.. maybe cutting off a few of pairs of my winter-worn leggings would spare the neighbors an accidental panty flashing… (LoL)

Ha! I hear you on that, Keri! It is hard to be modest when you are crawling around in the sand box. So good to see you on here!! Hope those cut off leggings work for you!

Great idea, Amy! I love the simplicity of it, too.
I think I need to do this with a couple of my daughter’s leggings that have worn out knees. Thanks for the idea!

I’ve done this for my son’s jeans before, I think we’re getting close to needing to do it again. Thanks for the reminder!
