Delicious Drink Mixes: Creamy Hot Cocoa or Vanilla Chai Tea Mix

I am trying to give as many precious homemade gifts that I can this year. Anything that I am unable to whip up myself, I plan to supplement with shopping on Etsy to fulfill my crafting skill downfalls.

First, I just want to say that I don’t think you necessarily have to be crafty to offer up beautiful handmade gifts for your friends and family…you just need to be a little resourceful. Resourcefulness might be looking to craftier bloggers for inspiration, checking out magazines or books at the library, or just stealing awesome ideas off of a good friend.

I am going to showcase my homemade gifts over these next few weeks, in hopes to breathe some life into your gift-giving. My crafting skills are limited, but my resourcefulness…I would say that is one of my strongest attributes.

Today we are going to discuss making hot drink mixes for yourself and to share with your friends. This is one of my favorite gifts to give in jars or tins for the holidays. I love to tuck jars of these in with a few holiday treats for the gift-giving season. The best part is that making a drink mix only requires the necessary ingredients and a blender or food processor. It also requires zero crafty skills. Hurray!

Let’s begin with my favorite cocoa recipe in the whole world. For this recipe, you only need a mixing bowl, a wooden spoon, and the necessary ingredients. If you don’t want the cocoa powder to look coarse, pop it in your blender or food processor and blend until it is the powdered consistency of the store-bought packets. I usually skip this step though because, frankly, this lasts about half a second in our house and I am on to making the next batch. For gift-giving though, processing is a nice touch!

****************
Hot Cocoa Mix

4 cups nonfat dry milk powder
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup non-dairy coffee creamer
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 (4 ounce) package instant chocolate fudge pudding

Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. If a finer consistency is desired, you can pour the mix into a blender or food processor and run it through that. Store in an airtight container. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup (depending on your cocoa preference) of the mix to an 8 ounce mug of boiling water.

****************
The next drink mix has been made every year for the past five years in my house. It is my favorite drink in the colder weather and is always an impressive gift to give or to receive.

After you are done making your cocoa mix, use that same exact bowl to mix up the Vanilla Chai Tea. I have experimented with what needs a whirl in the food processor and what doesn’t this year. I discovered that if you give just the tea and spices together a whirl, that you don’t need to add the rest of the ingredients in the food processor. Since I have a small food processor, this cuts down on the time to make this and the clean-up after I dump it all over the countertops.

****************

Homemade Vanilla Chai Tea Mix

1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
1 cup French vanilla powdered non-dairy creamer
2 ½ cups white sugar
1 ½ cups unsweetened instant tea
2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground cardamom
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp allspice
¼ tsp white pepper

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until it is a fine powder (If you have a small food processor, you can combine just the instant tea and spices in the food processor & then combine everything together in a bowl). Add two-three tablespoons of mix to 8 ounces of hot water or milk.

****************

Packaging of your drink mixes can be done in jars tied with raffia or holiday ribbon or you can package them up in a green and lovely way… in those old Crystal Light containers. Use some holiday gift wrap to cover them and tie a gift tag with some raffia around the drink mix containers. These are ideal, particularly for teacher gifts, because I don’t have to worry that my son will break the jar in route to school. Waterproof and airtight, it keeps the drink mix nice and safe. With a handmade or store-bought scarf, it makes a perfectly cozy gift to give.

I’m making your vanilla chai tea mix again this year. I prefer the option of using only regular coffee creamer, mixing 2 tsp. vanilla extract with the sugar, letting it dry, blending it to a powder, and then mixing it with the other ingredients.

white sugar is soooooooo bad. oxidizes and kills the body. so is non dairy creamer, oh the chemicals! love your resourcefulness though! i came here looking for a vanilla powder drink. live long and find truth and speak up!cheers!

This sounds great! I agree homemade gifts are so much more thoughtful. I’ll “borrow” your recipe for my own gift-giving. Thanks for sharing.

I was wondering how much the hot cocoa yields? I would love to make it for some gifts and I just wanna know about how many it makes so that I can figure how much I need to make! :) I can’t believe it uses chocolate pudding, so cool! Thanks for posting!

I’m curious about the sugar. Have you (or any of your followers) ever tried a sugar free substitute? I love the spiced tea, but can’t help but wonder if I can make it sugar free! Interest in knowing if someone else has before I give it a whirl… maybe save myself some grief and money if it won’t work!

Yes, I used Splenda and could not tell a difference at all. The recipe is delicious!

splenda is not a healthy sugar substitute. you would be better off using domino light sugar that is a mixture of reg. sugar and stevia. Though stevia tastes nasty, you can’t taste it in this mixture. Another healthy alternative sugar is xylitol. it is found in strawberries and will remineralize your teeth and they make a spray with it to cure sinus and ear infections.

I would love to use both of these recipes but have friends that can’t have sugar. If you happen to find a way to use one of the natural sugar substitutes (like estevia) then I would love to have it. I’ll make the recipe “as is” for those that don’t have these dietary restrictions.

Can you kindly tell me what kind of instant tea you use. Are you talking about the instant ice tea mix type of tea? I want so badly to make this but unsure of what to buy exactly. Thanks for any help

I buy the Lipton Instant Unsweetened Tea. It comes in a jar and is next to the tea bags in the grocery aisle! They make a caffeinated and a decaffeinated version! I hope that helps!

About how many mason jars did you fill up with the hot cocoa mix recipe?

    [Reply]

    Amy Reply:

I would say for small mason jars, it would probably do six-eight pretty easily! Let me know how it goes, Kelsey!

How many quart jars do you think the hot chocolate recipe would fill? I am wanting to make quart jars with homemade hot chocolate mix for my family for Christmas. Going to need about 8-10 jars (one for each family). Would I need to make the mix 8-10 times though?? Just curious.

I have, honestly, no idea at all. I just do one large jar, but I would imagine it would fill four!

When I made this, it was about 6 cups of dry powder. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the recipe. I’m trying to make as many gifts as I can this year but I want them to be meaningful and useful. This fits the criteria.

PS, I noticed the little girl in the red/pink boots has her shoes on the wrong feet. It’s so cute :)

I make a hot cocoa mix that is similar to this, but a MUCH larger batch for gift giving…

1 large box of milk powder
    1 bag of powdered sugar
    2 regular sized nesquik
    2 regular sized creamers

    Very Good Stuff….

Can you tell me if the cocoa uses unsweetened cocoa or the dutch cocoa. I have seem recipes that call for unsweetened cocoa, but I have read reviews for these and some say to use the dutch cocoa. Wasn’t sure if it was the same for this recipe. Thanks!

I just use unsweetened cocoa, Janet!

I’ve made both of these sugar free using Truvia and sugar free Vanilla Creamer and Sugar Free Pudding mix. It’s ALL GOOD!

I was wondering where you find 4 oz pudding? I decided to use sugar free pudding but I can’t find 4 oz pudding anywhere. That’s a lot of pudding! The ones I find at my local stores are 1.4 oz packages. Is that what you mean? I have also found 3.4 oz that are not sugar free.

I made both of these and they are the best! By far, the best Vanilla Chai Tea; I’m done buying Chai mixes, this one is THE BEST!! Thank you for sharing!!!

Thank you so much for sharing your hot chocolate and chai tea recipes! My best friend introduced my to chai tea a few years ago but the local shop where we get it doesn’t carry it year-round. Now we can have our favorite tea whenever we want! I use Splenda and sugar free French vanilla creamer and it still tastes just as decadent as the expensive drinks we would get at the local shop, but for a fraction of the price. I also make the hot chocolate mix for my kids all the time. I swap out the sugar in that too and use sugar free pudding mix and my kids just love it! We even made 2 batches for Christmas that we divided up into packages with homemade cookies and gave them away as gifts. It was nice way to get the boys involved and they loved handing out the presents they made :)

Hey Amy! I see another Amy answered a question above about the yield of this recipe (about 6 cups). About how much do you use in one serving? I would like to make single servings of this packaged with your homemade marshmallows (perhaps with almond extract) for my son’s valentines this year and would like to know how much to put in each package. I could sample them, I suppose…but I would hate to ruin my diet this early in the year!

Heather- I scoop about 1/4 cup per serving! I hope that helps!!! xo
