World’s Greatest Homemade Slushies

One of my kid’s favorite treats in the world are mom’s homemade slushies. I have been making these for years now and they never fail to be a hit with everyone in the family. My husband loves slushies even more than ice cream and he lights up just as much as the kids do when I break out the blender.

Slushies at our local ice cream joint really add up and we could easily spend about ten dollars getting everyone one of these. This recipe costs me about fifty cents for four and is just as good. Aldi offers Mixade variety packs that are even cheaper than the Kool-Aid brand and still make vibrant and delicious slushies.

I tried this with the no sugar varieties and they flopped and tasted more like a shaved ice than a slushie.

Go ahead, live a little! Bring on the sugar for a special family night treat!

2 cups ice water
1 packet fruit-flavored drink mix (use your favorite flavor)
2/3 cup sugar
4 cups or 1 full tray of ice cubes

You need a blender to prepare this recipe. Put all of the ingredients into your blender. It will be about 2/3 to 3/4′s full. Put the lid on. Process the mixture on high for a full minute. Stop the blender, use a spoon to stir it a bit. Look for unchopped ice chunks. If all the chunks are grated up, then go ahead and serve it. You may need to process it for another full minute though. Serve immediately. I usually have to spoon this out of the blender with a measuring cup because the mixture is so thick. Makes 4 – 8oz servings.

We make these too and LOVE them!!!!
They are a HUGE hit!! And I love the price!!! I will also make these with gateraid powder for the kids to take when we go to the MANY baseball and softball games. They melt as the game goes on and by the end of the game they are GONE. Thanks for sharing this…. We have had these a few times already this spring, but once summer gets here they will be a regular.

More than Survival- I love the idea of making these with Gatorade for games- that is brilliant! When we get to that stage with our kids, I am going to steal that idea! :)

fblife- These were made with my blender, but here is what I will admit…we did have to upgrade our blender. Each year I was burning out the motor on our $20 blender so we spent just a little more money last year and got the Hamilton Beach 12 Speed Wave Action Blender (I think my hubby found it at Target for around $59.99) and it has not burnt out on me. We don’t have an ice maker that makes crushed ice so we just do the trays of cubes in there and it does well. If your blender is overworked, it might be a good investment to upgrade your blender to handle this job regularly :) I will share a few more blender treats that will make it worth the investment, I promise :)

Oh my word, I am so making these. My family will crown me queen! Maybe I’ll even pick up a few “big glup” cups from the 7-11 to make it even more realistic!

Nester- I seriously ran out to the $1 store and they had those old-fashioned glass ice cream glasses and I bought four for our slushie nights…because a queen MUST make slushies in style :) Love it!

Christi- They really are that easy. I have the recipe memorized now because we do these as part of our Friday night pizza nights in the summer or as a treat with popcorn and our movie :)

Taylor- I can admit, my hubby is the biggest slushie fan of the whole family. He gets more excited than the kids about these. :) I hope your hubby loves them!!

Thanks for posting this. I just made some for me and my boys and they are loving it. It was so easy too. My fridge has a crushed ice dispenser so it blended really easily.

    Yum! What a fun recipe.

We use a 1950s chrome osterizer from the thrift store. It’s held up great through almost 10 years of hard usage, and was under $5. I get the sense that newer blenders are made out of cheaper stuff, making them just not grind like the old ones (unless you upgrade, like Amy!).

Ran across this in a google search because we don’t have any slushie syrup like I usually make and it turned out GREAT! the way I used to make it with syrup never turned out well but with this recipe it was wonderful and our blender has a dispenser so it was just like the real thing! thanks! I am going to see about finding those other blender recipes you mentioned above!

Thanks for this recipe, it rocks! What a great thrifty idea. We can now have slushies in a variety of flavors at a fraction of the cost.
Just like the real thing only cheaper and I save a trip to the store as well!

Hurray! To date, our favorites are tropical punch, cherry, and the kids love the grape flavored ones (I’m not much of a fan!). So glad you enjoyed these!

I’m looking forward to trying these at our daughter’s 5th birthday party this weekend. We’re havubg a pool party so this fits right into the theme. One question though, is the kool-aid unsweetened or do I need the presweetened kind?

    Thanks for sharing!

Yes, just an unsweetened drink mix packet, Stacy. Just don’t buy the sugar-free variety because the ice doesn’t crystallize well. Have a great party and let us know how they turn out!

Just made them tonight. For about 50 cents, I was able to make slushies for all five of my kids (and my husband). Thanks for a great recipe!

Can we use Gatorade instead of the fruit-flavored packet?

I’m not sure how that would perform since you add sugar to the slushies. When I tried the sugar-free mix, it didn’t have the same consistency. Let us know if you give it a try and how it turns out!
