MomAdvice Simplified: Simply Picking the Best Jeans & T-Shirt

On MomAdvice Simplified, my weekly podcast for moms, I am very excited to share that I will be gabbing it up with my real-life friend & wardrobe coach, Kathy Friend. This podcast airs weekly at 2PM EST each Thursday.

I asked Kathy to join our show again, but to help guide moms into choosing the right jeans and t-shirts. Since becoming an at-home mom, my wardrobe mainly consists of these two key pieces and I thought it would be great to have her share which brands are the best and how to find the best cuts for our figures.

Kathy is going to share with moms how to pick the best jeans and t-shirts for your figure, but also find a look that is both flattering and comfortable. We will be discussing the best brands, how to get the best look for any budget, and what items to add to our jeans and t-shirt wardrobe to take them from day to night.

Do you have any questions about choosing the right jeans or t-shirt for Kathy? Please leave your questions here and I will be sure to get them worked into our discussion!

I can actually wear dressy trouser jeans to work. How can I dress up my jeans and tees for a smart casual workplace?

any suggestions from Kathy on what brand of jeans avoids the gap at the back of the waistband would be much appreciated! I don’t understand why waistbands aren’t created with a woman’s hourglass shape in mind…

Plus size women are all told to wear stretch jeans – these tend to accentuate things. Could she suggest jeans for that problem? Secondly, what if your a 14/16 but also TALL??

Favorite jeans for me are ones with a vintage flair– best found a thrift store!

Just had fantastic luck finding plus sized jeans at the Lane Bryant outlet – I wear a 16 or 18,and am just tall enough that most pants are a bit short on me (5’10″).

These don’t seem to be the same jeans that they have at the standard stores, but they were long (gotta wear heels with these jeans!), fit my hips AND waist properly (no gap in the back), and I’m in love with them!!

Now if they would only make them in BLACK in addition to dark blue and faded denim….

Would love to hear of some jeans that fit larger thighs and a smaller waist without being HUGE in the legs all the way down!

Well, I was going to ask about tall 14/16 jeans, but that was covered already :)

I am tall but curvy. How can I wear a T-shirt well? If I buy shorter ones that hit above the hip, they ride up when I move, showing my tummy or back. But longer ones tend to bunch up around my waist, or I pull them down over my hips and they look huge…

I’m a new mom and have quite the “muffin-top,” even though I’m below my pre-pregnancy weight. I need help with that pooch! I knew how to dress my body pre-baby, a lower waistline helped elongate my torso and made me less top heavy. I also now have no butt, so any suggestions on that would be great! Thanks!

I caught this podcast after it aired and I just want to say “thank you!” for airing it! It was so helpful to me because jeans and t-shirts are my mom uniform and I loved learning about some new options to make the most of this combo! Thanks again!

Anonymous – on jeans to work…you can dress up your regular jeans with a jacket that you would normally wear with a suit – be sure to wear a nicer shoe with this look.

Also look for a trouser jeans – this is a dressier cut, and is more work appropirate.

Angie – brands of jeans that avoid the gap in the back. Honestly – that is a question I can’t answer without specifics of your measuerments. The best solution for 99.9% of women is to find a goo alteration person – or to purchase an IsABelt. The IsABelt is a good soliution -and really works!

Lisa – if you are a 14/16 and tall, I would suggest Lane Bryant jeans. Have heard great things about them. Also, try Not Your Daughter’s Jeans.

On the tall end of things, be sure you are familiar with what your inseam is – if your inseam is more than a 34″, you may have a harder time finding something…and you are going to pay for a longer inseam. There are websites where you can send them your favorite jeans, and they will make you a pair (duplicate your favorites). Might be a good solution.

Andrea – try the Not Your Daughter’s Jeans or Pure Color. I’ve had great success with both of these brands for LOTS of ladies.

Anitra – on tees…again, ALTERATION! Hemming the bottom of a tee is probably the easiest alteration I can think of. A tee (ideally, and generally) should hit at your wrist bone (when untucked)…that is the best length for most ladies.

Marcee – depending on how long ago you had the baby…my advice is different.

If the baby is inside of a year, I would say do nothing until your body stops changing. Post-baby, your bod will change a lot.

If the baby is more toddler age, then I would suggest looking for jeans with 2 key elements: 1 – rise – you have stepped into the mid-rise portion of womanhood! The waist band of those jeans need to hit right below your belly button – that will hold things in.

Also, look for jeans with a wider waistband – this will also hold things in, and help to avoid the muffin top.

    My questions…

    1. Where are the best places (online or otherwise…) to buy t-shirts?
    2. What “style” of t-shirt is most flattering for “well-endowed” women?
    3. What are your thoughts about white jeans?
    4. In your opinion, what are the “top 5″ companies that sell jeans?
