The boys needed haircuts and luckily I have become quite familiar with a pair of inexpensive Conair clippers. My husband and son each take a seat on my thrifted bench and I give my son a good old-fashioned buzz cut. Next, I work more cautiously on my husband’s hair so he still looks sharp for his job. They both seem happy with their new looks and I tidy up the bathroom that is now covered in hair.

I look forward to the haircuts al fresco to help with the clean-up this summer.

Each time I do this though, I imagine that money all fanned out that I would have had to spend at the Super Cuts, and it makes me feel like a superstar.

Want to be a superstar? You can read my haircutting tips right here. Remember though, these tips don’t come from a professional, but my boys look pretty great!

This is the one thing I haven’t gotten brave enough to do yet. I used to cut my husband’s hair, but gave up on it – it just never looked quite right. I’ve never tried to cut either of the boys’. Way to go!

I’ve been cutting my husband’s hair since we were married, over 8 years ago! It was his idea and I very nervously learned to cut hair – on his head! :-) I am quite confident in my ability now, at least for his hairstyle and type of hair! It has saved us so much money! And when we were both working full time and he would go and get a haircut, almost each time he went there would be a section or two that I needed to trim up because the barber missed it!

Christi- I believe you could do it! Let me know if you get up the courage to do it and how it turns out!

Tammy- That is exactly how I felt when my son and husband went to get their haircut. I was always fixing and trimming it anyway so it was worth it to just do it at home.

FunkyFrum- Your hubby is very brave to do it himself- WOW!

ah, we love the conair clippers too…I just did my hubby’s on Saturday…in the basement on a old plastic shower curtain, makes clean-up a breeze!
I love that his is just one length all over, can’t get any easier and saving money on his cuts makes me feel like I can afford to get mine done at least every 7 weeks!

I do all the hair cuts in our house too– HUGE money-saver right there! I use clippers for the “underneath”, but I cut with scissors. I’m kind of fussy about how my guys’ hair looks. :) I love that my hubby’s friends are actually jealous that he has a wife who cuts his hair. And packs his lunch. And all that frugal stuff. ;)

Good advice. This is such a great way to save money if you’re brave! I started cutting my husband’s hair after we were married (nearly 8 yrs. ago). It took me FOREVER at the time, but now I can zip through it fairly quickly.

I also do all three of my children’s hair. (1 girl, 2 boys.) I recommend it to anyone. You can definitely teach yourself. It takes practice but if I can do it, ANYONE can. And it’s so worth it!

I started cutting my husband’s hair out of necessity when we evacuated for Katrina and he’s never gone back to the salon! It is so easy, and now that I have it down pat it only take a few minutes to do. I’ve also started cutting my son’s hair, and except for a couple mess ups at the start (too short bangs!) he looks pretty cute too! Such an easy way to save a lot of $ in my opinion!

I can’t do this one either. My hair is one thing I don’t scrimp on although I do go to a gal that does it in her home. I save about 50% that way.
