Day 13: Giving To Others When You Have Little To Give

Do you ever feel like you can make very little impact on someone because you don’t have the money to do it? I can admit that I feel that way often. There are so many around me that are affected by job loss, medical problems, and depression. Many times I feel so helpless to these situations because I don’t have the financial means or connections to help someone out of these situations. It has been weighing very heavy on my heart these days.

I had planned to make a meal for a girlfriend who just had a new baby. It is such a joy to get to bring a meal to a new momma and know that I helped make her day a little easier. Our mom’s group provides meals to new moms and I try to sign up as often as I can because it is one thing that I feel so good about doing and nothing brings me more pride than cooking for others.

When I got home, I was tired. It was a long day of running around, returning email after email, and fielding phone calls. I put on a pot of soup for our supper and heard a knock at our door. It was my neighbor and she had come over to see if Ethan wanted to come over and play. The children immediately made themselves at home in my house and I told her to head home and they could play here instead.

As she stood in my kitchen she said to me, “Wow, something smells so good!” While the kids played, I hurried up to make the soup and put it in a jar to run over to her house. She was so surprised and thankful and it was a great reminder to me.

You don’t have to have a lot to make a positive impact on someone else. What seemed like a small gesture to me means a lot more to someone than you might think.

We are so hurried, so busy, so tired. I know I often feel like I have nothing to give anyone. I realize now that a woman of small means can still give with her whole heart and make a big difference to someone else.

This is an awesome post. So many times I read about people who are so caught up in saving money that it is all about them, and not about being able to bless anyone else, regardless of how big or small. Seriously, why do we all work so hard to save and find financial stability? Is it so we hoard everything for ourselves? It is great that you are able to give to others even during your no spend challenge month. Thanks for being a great example for everyone.

Amy, thank you for this post. The concerns you mentioned here are things that I struggle with quite often.

Thanks for reminding me that we all have the means to be a blessing to others, no matter what the scale.

I wrote about helping single moms on my blog awhile ago. It is interesting that very small things help us immensely.

I tell people the little thing you think doesn’t matter can be just exactly what someone was praying for.

I think people think if they can’t pay for all the bills, or do all the work, or take all the hurt away they shouldn’t do anything!
    That’s not true.
When your life is in a mess, “little” things are truly huge.

Great! We can also give “time”, like babysitting or yard work that frees someone to focus on themselves and not responsibilities.

Today, Valentines’ Day is a perfect day to do that–babysit for a couple that doesn’t have a chance to go out together often. You’ll get back more than you’ll give!!

Thank you for this post. I’ve been fortunate to find people willing to offer anything from helping research online to making videos and other non-monetary assistance for my daughter’s disease awareness.

A little means so much to people like myself…what may take 5 minutes for someone to do for us lasts with us forever…

I often feel the same way! Thanks so much for this post! Times are tight for everyone and I often find myself feeling that everyone out there is doing better (financially) than we are. I’m sure that’s not the case but if often feels that way. I try to cut costs wherever I can and I’m truly inspired by your challenge! We just paid of a TON of debt and then the car broke down. There is no fixing it so we have to buy. I’m thinking this seems like the perfect time to join your challenge!!!
