We are still getting Emily settled into her big girl room, but I thought I would share some of the ideas we have had so far for her new space.
First, Ethan’s bed was moved into Emily’s room and Ethan is getting a loft-style bed for his room with a desk underneath to make use of his smaller space. We had a bed fiasco, better left for another post, and he is now sleeping on the trundle part of this bed until his bed comes in.
We swung the daybed around so that the back of it becomes the side to keep her more secure. It is great because it still has the security of the crib, but has more space for her to sleep in. She has been in it for a couple of weeks now and hasn’t attempted trying to get out of bed by herself yet.
The room was already painted a cheery yellow and I already had the curtains which were a set of eyelet lace curtains from the Shabby Chic line at Target. The comforter has been in a chest in our basement since we first got married. This bed was originally our guest bed and I used this comforter for it. It was a tad too girly for Ethan so we put it away, in hopes we would be adding a little girl to our family someday. It was a steal for $19.99 from TJ Maxx and is a Tommy Hilfiger comforter. It is reversible with another pretty flowered design on the alternate side. The addition of this “Sweet Dreams” pillow was bought with some of her Christmas money from the grandparents from Target (also from Shabby Chic).
The art in her room is courtesy of her big brother. These were two pictures that Ethan made at school and donated for his sister’s room. I found these frames at the dollar store so these were the perfect budget-friendly decor for her new room.
We made a banner with her name on it for one of the walls. The color didn’t turn out very good in this picture, but it is a pale pink with dark pink polka dots. The scrapbook paper and ribbon came from my craft supplies and I had my husband pick a pretty font for it. I used my circle punch to punch out these circles, but you could also trace a drinking glass to make them all uniform in size.
We bought new rugs for each of the kid’s rooms. These are bamboo rugs that we purchased from Walmart and I absolutely love them. I have a fondness for bamboo rugs because they wipe off easily and are easy to vacuum or broom sweep. Underneath the bed is a basket of toys and a basket of diapers. We are hoping one of these baskets will be no longer needed…can you guess which one?
This set of table and chairs relocated from our playroom downstairs. Ethan was getting too big to sit in these so we put it in her room along with a basket of books for her to read.
This step stool holds an extra set of pink sheets for her bed. This stool used to be her brothers and it is one of my favorite little storage solutions for keeping a spare set of sheets.
This little lamp was also bought at Target and I used her Christmas money from her grandparents to buy it. I really wanted to bring the pink into the room and this was a cute little addition to her big girl space. You could implement the same idea with a basic white shade and a little grosgrain ribbon and some glue.
The perfect room for our sweet little princess!
What budget-friendly ideas are you proud of in your kid’s rooms?

Oh, I love this! My daughter is 14 months and I already am watching some of the Shabby Chic decor for her “big girl” room. Some of the bedding for kids is 30% off and I am watching for it to go cheaper.

Nice job Amy! I especially love Ethan’s artwork and the circle name plates!

For my little one, we created a Dora room using pink and purple paint on alternating walls with white trim on the door panels. Then we took all the Dora gifts we got over the years (dolls, vanity, chair), and created a lovely room. The $20 white down quilt from Target’s black Friday sales completes it.

The daybed idea is genius! I so wish we had not moved DS out of the crib when we did. It really disrupted his (and our) sleep since we did.
Well as you know I posted about our big boy room awhile back. I think I am most proud of the flag bunting I sewed using fabric from my stash. It really brightens up the room and brings all the colors together.

Carly- I am such a fan of the Shabby Chic stuff. I always told my husband that if I ever ended up alone, I would probably end up in a Shabby Chic house. He seems to limit the pink & lace for some reason elsewhere in the house
Ginabad- That is such a great idea to repurpose all the toys for decoration, I love it!
MamaK- Still love that flag bunting myself- you are so much more creative than I am. I never really thought the daybed idea was smart until I would have my friends over and they were like, "why didn't I think of that?" I think that has been one of our best furniture investments. The pop-up trundle is also great for sleepovers and sick kids.

Ooh, what a pretty room!! Our Mia is still in a crib (she is 2 years and 4 months) and I intend to keep her there as long as possible! She hasn’t tried to get out yet. Though she is running out of room with her two bears, two babies, ernie, curious george, bunny, and TWO blankets. (It’s a little out of control).
Don’t you love Target? I got a great rug there for Mia’s room, toy storage, and my son Henry’s room is pretty much all Target aside from furniture.
I’m with you on the diapers…we still change Mia on her changing pad on a dresser and it’s ridiculous! She’s too big! I need to get cracking on the potty training. Please post when you have some success with that! I need tips!

I love how simple yet sweet, and of course frugal her room is!

Love the idea of turning the bed around!

Turning the bed around is genius! My fave cheap decoration was an art hanger I made for my oldest daughter’s room. I took a 1×2 piece of wood, painted it white, put brightly painted clothespins on it, and hung it on her wall. You can click my name for the blog post I wrote about it.

I love the Target love!!

I too love the "turning the bed around" idea. So clever!
My budget friendly ideas are actually in our playroom. I got a kiddie table & 3 chairs (like emily's) off of craigslist for $20. I also repurposed some 3' book cases I wasn't using as toy holders. I bought some canvas bins @ Target (yes, Target again!!) and put 2 on each of the 3 shelves to store toys vertically. Similar to Kristie's idea, I am in the process of making an artwork holder.

I absolutely love your idea for turing the daybed around to provide Emily with a rail to help keep her cozy! The garland with her name and Ethan’s art is wonderful too.
My favorite frugal touch to my daughter’s room is the curtains – my mom made the valances from a crib bumper that coordinated with her decor and we made the curtains as well, very economical and such a unique focal point!

I did a post full of pictures when we totally re-did our daughter’s room (switching her from a crib to bed and changing from plain blue walls to cutey and pink) while trying not to spend too much.

By the way — I love that pillow! We recently bought that exact pillow to give as a baby shower gift to a friend that had a brand new baby girl shortly after having just had a baby girl. So, she didn’t really *need* anything. My daughter didn’t want to give the pillow away. LOL

I love the idea of turning a daybed around! Does it make it hard to tuck her in at night?
