I got mine at a thrift sale for $1!! I love it for pizza dough, but I still can't really figure out loaves. I don't like cooking the loves in the machine, but I haven't really figured out how to cook loaves in the oven either. Any help on that would be great!

I would definitely say to thrift-store it. My husband suggested that we needed one, so I picked one up at the thrift shop (since I figured we'd use it twice and I could take it back there guilt-free!)...it works great and now we use it all the time! It's definitely been worth the $8 I spent, since we use it to make all of our bread now...super cheap!

www.kiddio.org

I use my bread machine every single day - sometimes twice a day and you can on rare occasions catch it on its third go-round. So, in a family like ours, it pays to have a "one use" machine. It is cheaper, better (I control the goodness that goes into it) and takes less than 2 minutes for me to do all the work I'll need to do. Definitely worth its real estate on my kitchen counter.

Another thanks for posting about bread machines. I bought one at a yard sale in my neighborhood for just $10 and have been experimenting. I'm really eager to explore the recipe links.

Thanks for posting on bread making - tastes so much better than store bought!

I am skeptical, however, of any "one use" kitchen appliance, especially since so many folks receive Kitchenaides and food processors as gifts, both of which can do the hard work of kneading the dough. (The former has a dough hook and the latter may come with a special kneading or dough setting and a blunt blade.)

That said, kneading dough by hand actually isn't that bad - sure, 6 to 8 minutes of wrestling with a super elastic ball of dough may not be an efficient use of time, but I can certainly say that it is a workout!
