Beer Poached Italian Brats

Last week we decided to dine on Italian Brats cooked on our grill. To be honest, the only kind I have ever had were prepared by someone else or were the pre-cooked variety that you find next to the hot dogs.

I had a lot of beer leftover from my Retro Housewife Bunco night though and thought why not poach the brats in some beer before we threw them on the grill?

They turned out delicious! I used this recipe (scaled down for 1 pound of brats and minus the onion because of personal preference) and served these with some tortilla chips and carrot sticks.

I took advantage of the Memorial Day cookout sales that were going on at the store and stocked the freezer with some yummy goodies to throw on the grill this summer. These brats were on sale for $2.50 per pound, which made them both economical and a delicious choice for summer.

Sound Off: What is your favorite grilling recipe for the summer? I am looking for some suggestions to add to our mix this summer!

My absolute favorite is to take boneless chicken breasts and cut them into chunks and marinate them in Italian dressing or honey mustard dressing and make kabobs with them along with fresh veggies that I have cut up and marinated in some of the dressing- I use mushrooms, onions, yellow squash and red peppers.

I also love to take fresh potatoes and peel them, cut them into thin slices and place them on aluminum foil sheets that I have dotted with butter and salt the potatoes and fresh pepper and then top with another dot of butter and fold the aluminum foil around them to make pouches and grill them- I add onions to my potatoes as well. Yum!

We grilled last night and I made potatoes on the grill that were absolutely delish. Wash & dry potatoes; slice thin. Layer potatoes, red onion, pepper and season salt and dot with butter on aluminum foil that is large enough you can fold it up in a rectangle pack. Place on grill for about 30 minutes. (I did 4 potatoes and used 2 foil packs.) I also made a saute of zucchini, chopped onion and mushrooms on the stove but it too could easily be grilled in a foil packet. We do a lot of kabobs in the summer. Anything on a skewer tastes yummy! And I love the fact that we can eat great tasting food without heating up the kitchen.

We go even one step easier on those brats-we just throw them in the crockpot with onion and green pepper, cover with beer and let it cook all afternoon. It’s a great dinner when you don’t want to cook-we’ve actually used it as a camper and tailgating type meal.

Ok, totally not the comment you wanted, but – in quickly scanning the titles on Google reader, I read the last word as brat with a short a, not braht. Had to do a double take.

Jenn- I am definitely going to try that next time. i also thought those brats would taste delicious cooked in marinara sauce and topping them with a little sauce and cheese. Yum!!

I just wanted to let you know last week we tried your spaghetti and meatballs and then used the leftovers for meatball sandwiches ( I even tried your recipe for the buns) and it was great! I will definitely make it again. That was my daughters first spaghetti experience and she ate 3 meatballs and noodles. Last night we tried your sloppy joe recipe and loved that also. We won’t ever buy that canned stuff again! Thanks for all your recipes. My husband is so excited about what I will find on your site for next week.

We do our brats similar to yours, but we grill them first, then put them in an aluminum pan filled with beer, butter and sliced onions. We let them simmer over the grill for awhile. Yum!
