I actually did my purl stitches just like that when I taught myself to knit. I still have the afgan with the first quarter of it all strange looking from that stitch! I loved your post about this!
Sandy

Hah! That is great. When I first started knitting, I had the purl down, but I actually was messing up in a similar way on the knit stitch. It wasn't until I had completed an entire sleeve of a project (my first one done in the round) and I was half way up my second sleeve when I realized what I was doing wrong. I proceeded to complete the project incorrectly and then swiftly taught myself the correct way. It was amazing how much easier the knit stitch was when done correctly. Hang in there!

I learned how to crochet from a lefty and when I tried to learn to knit I couldn't do it the "right" handed way. I am betting that maybe a simalar problem with you :)
I still crochet as a lefty but can slowly knit as a righty.

Ah! You make me laugh! I'm not experienced enough to know what stitch it might be, what the other Amy said does sound familiar though. Thanks for the fun post!

actually, I think I know people who purl like that. But you have to do the knitting backwards as well to make up for the backwards purl or it doesn't stockinette properly.

and then don't switch off knitting with a friend who knits normally. This happened to a friend of mine the other day when she handed me her knitting at a boring lecture.
