The Motherload Blog

Each Tuesday on WSBT, I share tips to help save families money. This week I shared tips for saving on printing costs. This segment goes along with a past entry that I had written on ways that we save on printing and on ink.

If you have an idea that you would like to see covered on WSBT, please leave me a comment and let me know. I am always looking for new ideas.

Sound Off: How do you save on printing and ink expenses? Do you return your ink cartridges anywhere or do you refill them yourself? Please share!

I have a laser printer & a color printer at home. Everyone uses the laser printer for most jobs & the color printer (with the more expensive inks) – just for the color parts of school projects. In 12 years I’ve had to replace my laser printer cartridge only twice for b&w; printouts (& it is higher quality printing!)

Good tips. I saw a while back though that Walgreens can actually refill your ink cartridges for you at a much lower cost than buying a new cartridge. I have yet to try that though. Also I believe you can get cheap ink cartridges on line and especially E-bay.

This sounds kind of strange, but I have cut my printing costs by 95% lately.

Since I got a laptop, I’m no longer connected to the printer unless I walk into the other room and hook things up.

I’m finding that I can copy and paste almost everything I need to a Word file and just save it on my hard drive (backed up on a thumb drive.) Even confirmations of online bill payments can be copied and pasted!

Don’t ya love it when laziness also saves money?!?

I also love Crystal’s point that you can print Target coupons at the wedding registry kiosk saving your printer ink. That’s always been an excuse of mine for not using printable coupons more.

Agreed on the laptop post. =) Actually, since my printer died, I haven’t replaced it. I usually don’t need to print much, but if I do, I check out a website called postful.com. If you’re sending letters out to loved ones, it’s a nice way to do so, and they include full-color pictures, as well! It makes life easier than owning a printer and refilling the ink myself. Plus, the costs include postage, so I save time by not hitting the post office, too!
