These little dinner trays are one of my favorite things for my kids to eat on. I found these awhile ago at Target and they continue to offer them in array of colors. For some reason, they really start marketing and selling them around the Easter season in pastel colors. I noticed they had them in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog last year for about three times the price.

One of the compartments is perfect for sippy cups or for a big glob of ketchup for dipping. The other compartments are big enough for generous portions of food and deep enough that it makes scooping things like macaroni and peas just a little bit easier. Bonus for the kids…the foods never touch.

A quick rinse and in the dishwasher they go! Cafeteria dining at its best!

  1. I do occasionally see these donated, but not in such pretty colors. I would imagine hospitals, nursing homes, etc.. make donations from time to time of the dinner trays.

It definitely is great for portion control and they are so easy to clean up too.

  2. Great post title, ‘little things’ are what often turn meals into licked-the-platter-clean meals.

Those trays do look cute. Anything that offers room for ketchup is something I’ve got to check out.

  3. My son loves it when I serve dinner in a plate that has three compartments. I’ve also started serving meals in Bento kits, they keep everything separated, and he likes the little portions too.

I’ll have to look for the little trays, I bet he would love them.

  4. Ok, I’m an adult and I bought myself one last summer! (its got strawberries on it) It is PERFECT for portion control when I was on Weight Watchers.

In fact, several years ago, Avon sold a similar type plate w/ the compartments sized for portions of each, meat, starch, veggie and fat. I know because I bought one. I didn’t use it all that much and the Target ones are WAY prettier!

  5. Like some of the previous commenters, I would like an adult size one. I can’t stand for my food to touch! Until then, I know my kids will enjoy them. I’m off to Target!

  6. Heather- These are plastic and not intended for the microwave. I have seen ceramic ones, but they are a lot heavier and can chip. I just put heated food on these instead of zapping them :)

  7. I love these! I have a pretty red set that I bought at the Dollar store. My other set is a summer variety (green, orange, yellow and pink… guess who uses the pink?) that I purchased at WalMart. Cheap, cheap, cheap.
I love them because they do remind me to make sure I am offering all the food groups. And what kid doesn’t like his food separated?
I must warn, however, that some of them look like portion control, but mine all have very large sections for the food, more than one serving could easily fit in there.
