We defrost our freezer when it really cold out (right now would be a good time since it is currently 7 degrees). We load all our food into laundry baskets and set them outside with a few blankets over them. Unplug the freezer and wait. Like you said a wet/dry vac works great to suck up the water. But if you have a steam vac (for carpets) that will work too. All that is left is a quick wipe down and put the food back.

This is a great post- I am getting ready to plug in my upright freezer after 6 months of not using it. And I didn't know to put baking soda in the freezer as well as the fridge- thanks for the info!

We do have an ice maker, but it doesn't work :) We need to add that to our list of repair jobs around the house :)

That is a great idea though!!

Your freezer looks nice and neat! I noticed it looks like you have an ice maker, but don't use it. We use ours, and the extra or "old" ice has a purpose also. I pack the garbage disposal full and turn it on with a little warm water running. It cleans all of the gunk out beautifully!!

I've linked to your post as yesterday I posted a picture of the inch thick ice in my freezer. Procrastinating about replacing the seal has caused me to defrost it twice already!
Thanks for a great and timely article, I read your blog regularly but don't always get time to comment :)
