Today on Frugal Hacks, I am sharing tips for recording all of your favorite Christmas specials and movies on television this year. Who would want to miss any of their old favorites? Plus, they added some great new favorites (did anyone else love the new Shrek Christmas special?) for the year too. Be sure to check out my post so you can set those recorders for some fun family nights together!
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, we checked out some of our old favorite movies and I happened upon a movie that we had not seen before called, “The Holiday Inn.” This has become my new favorite Christmas movie and I would recommend checking it out for your family this holiday season. T
here is lots of great singing and dancing in this film and although there is some political incorrectness for our time period, it is an excellent movie that really made us smile! Interesting enough, it was also the inspiration for the hotel chain name…Holiday Inn.
I am curious, what is your favorite holiday movie? Do you have any obscure holiday movies that might be overlooked by most families, but that is a favorite in your house?

With out a doubt:
Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas
(Jim Henson)
I highly recommend it for your children. I love it.

One of my favorite recent holiday-time movies is The Family Stone. I also love Little Women at this time of year!

“A Christmas Carol”, starring George C. Scott. (1984) It’s my favorite version, and I love the soundtrack. Always puts me in a Christmas mood – I have to watch it every year!

Probably the original “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Also “White Christmas,” which shares many similarities with “Holiday Inn.”

The Shop Around the Corner is not as obscure as it used to be. It is a great one. It is the original version of You’ve Got Mail.

I hadn’t heard of this one but I’ll put it on my Netflix queue right now!
My favorite Christmas movie is probably the Charlie Brown one just because it’s one of the few that takes a quasi-religious view of the holiday.

The Bells of St. Mary’s…
I used to watch it every year on WGN in Chicago. It was usually on Christmas Eve before we went to Midnight Mass.
I also love The Bishop’s Wife…the original version of the Preacher’s Wife!

One of my favorites is a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie called Silver Bells – it was on TV a couple of years ago, but is out on video as well I think. I also love one called The Christmas Child based on a book written by Max Lucado! I have other favorites which have been mentioned here as well!

HI, Amy – We watch “White Christmas” about ten times over the holidays – it’s a tradition! The kids LOVE “Rudolph”. I haven’t shown them “Frosty” yet (they’re still young!) since I always cry when Frosty melts- silly but true! Jim and I argue over what’s the better show: “Grinch” (him) or “Charlie Brown” (me, of course).
Also, do you (or anyone) remember “The House without a Christmas Tree”? I loved that show when I was about 11. I haven’t seen it in years. Happy Watching!!! -Beth

I’m actually looking for some help trying to remember a really old Christmas movie. It plays on the idea that an old man is really Santa (like Miracle on 34th street) but it is a different movie. I’m pretty sure the original release was in color. Any suggestions?
