Also, if you are really strapped, and have the extra time, most colleges keep a copy of all text books for all courses in the library- you can't check them out, but you can use them in the library to go ahead and do your homework when you have a break (instead of hanging out somewhere where you might be tempted to go over budget at a Starbucks or something)....
I did this with almost all my classes, except one, which the professor trusted me with his extra copy, which I gladly returned at the end of the semester. I did not spend a dime- in fact, think of all the impulse purchases I did not make! I actually made money, because I had a scholarship, and what I did not spend on books, I could pocket and use for more important things...like rent and power.:)

I just checked the prices on abe.com for a few non-textbook books that I want and some that I am looking to buy for Christmas gifts and the prices were the same or a little cheaper than on half.com or amazon, so it wouldn't hurt to check all the sites!

The prices on abe.com are ridiculously high. The poster must be selling there and looking for hits. You'll do much better at half.com or amazon.com buying used textbooks.

In regards to the last tip, I've heard that international editions of text books aren't 100% legal and that the authors don't get royalties on them.
