We have been signing with my hearing son since he was 4 months old. At 6-7 months he produced his first sign "milk". It was great! One time he was fussy and I couldn't figure out what he wanted I looked and he was signing milk. It wasn't time to eat but his tummy was ready! I wouldn't have known had he not signed it to me. By age 12 months he knew and used approx 50 signs. Now at almost 2 he doesn't sign much anymore but speaks in sentences up to 7 words long! I attribute it to signing. He learned about language at an early age and as he learned to talk he used less and less sign. Now, he is an excellent communicator. I tried to get pictures of him signing and some are so precious. Glad to know that signing worked for others as well!

I stumbled across your blog and wanted to comment on the Signing Time series.

My son is 2 and we have been signing with him since he was 10 months old (Mostly to avoid high chair tantrums :) Now that he is older he uses sign language and verbal communication to speak to us. Sometimes we don't understand which word he is saying, but when he signs we're able to "dicipher" what he is saying and avoid a meltdown.

He loves the signing time videos and gets so excited whenever we watch them. We found that it's great to do as a family and even though my son's verbal communication isn't lacking we will continue to teach him sign language as a second language.

We watch Signing Time on PBS. I didn't know about the videos...I'll have to check them out. Thanks!

Funny you should mention speech delays..both my children have speech delays as well. Ds is almost ten and still has a slight delay with conversational skills - word retrieval. He was very delayed, he tested at the two year old speech level when he was age four. Dd is two and speaks one or two words, but understands a lot.

I'll have to do a post on this someday. We have used at-home speech therapy with ds which was very helpful.

We absolutely LOVE Baby Signing Time! We had started sign language with Emily because she would point at things and scream to get them. Not acceptable for us. Now, she knows all the signs presented on volumes one and two and we are starting with Rachel!

My dgs has a deaf child in his class 1st grade so they are being taught sign so they can communicate with her. My youngest dd had a best friend that was deaf and my daughter took class at the school for deaf so she could be certified in it and also have a loving friendship with her still best friend for going on 14 years now.

Vicki (Wheezymom)

Hi Amy! I have been visiting your blog for a couple of months now and tell my friends all about it! Anyway, I'm finally posting!

About the signing times videos. My girls LOVE them. I did sign with my first child even though she was above her age for speaking ability. I loved using them whenever we were in the car and she would throw her 2 yr old tantrum. There's not much you can do while driving. But I would say, "what's this sign?" or "show me the sign for_____" and she would stop and think about it and I could usually distract her with this for several minutes (or at least until we got home) I loved that!

Now, my second child is a little behind in verbal skills at 16 months old, but I've been teaching her since 10months and so we understand what she needs or wants, all thanks for sign language! Both of my girls still love to watch signing times!!

By the way, THANKS! I love your site, advice, FREEBIES, everything!!!
