My best 'double agent' costume was my son's 2 year old costume. We bought superman pajamas with a cape attached. He wore the pjs (without the cape) all winter, and it was a great & comfortable costume with the cape!

Last year, my daughter went as dice (a die really). She had sold pizza for her school PTO, and the boxes were perfect sauares. I cut out holes for the head and arms, covered the box in white paper, and glued on spots. All for FREE!!

Amy,

I've seen lots of barely-used costumes at yard sales. This will be my son's 1st Halloween, and we were given a little pumpkin costume by some friends. I'm thrilled and can't wait to see him in it!

We save money by volunteering to help with the Church carnival instead of doing fancy costumes. It's an outreach for kids and the costumes are admired and praised and fun, safe activities and tons of candy are given out. My son is going as a football player in this year's uniform [free!!] and my daughter as a girl scout in my old unform [good thing Grandma is a pack rat!!!]
That said best cheap costume??? Wrap duct tape sticky-side out and adhear kleenexes, gum, candy wrappers, straws, cup lids, candy etc and go as the Movie Theatre Floor!! Or wear all black and be a "mime" If you can find cheap enough foil and some chicken wire a Hersey's Kiss is easy, too. If you're frugal you'll wash that foil and bake potatos with it!

Amy,

I don't know how you do all that you do.. you are truly AMAZING! I'm praying for ya'll, your Mom, the job, all of the changes.

We've been planning our halloween costumes and the kids came up with doing Cruella De'vil and dalmations. D13 and I found a used fake fur coat at the thrift store for $3.00 and a black dress to go under it for .50. We're looking for white sweatsuits to paint spots on for S7 and S4. They're pretty excited about it!

We always shop the costume clearance at walmart after Halloween. I pick up super hero costumes and give them to the boys for Christmas. I've never paid more than $3 for a costume and they love running around being batman, etc. I also look for theme costumes that might work for school events (we just had community helper day at school) so I have something on hand. Ty wore scrubs that our neighbor gave him last year when she was cleaning out her closet and we have fireman and policmen costumes just in case.
They've come in handy for other occasions too.. fun stuff. The kids used face paint we bought for .10 a set and had a clown dress up night not long ago.

This year we have an extra treat because we found paper products for .25 cents and all kinds of decorations really cheap. We'll be able to use the decorations for a few years at least and won't break to have halloween parties.

Thanks for the tips!

Sheila

My favorite costume as a child AND my favorite for my daughter was made by taking a large pumpkin and hollowing it out from the BOTTOM, cutting a hole large enough for your head to fit thru....yes your head! Carve out the eyes, nose and mouth. I wore a shower cap over my hair. I wore an oversized orange sweatshirt and black tights. I think we loved it because no one could ever guess who we were!! We always used a pillow case for the candy because it wouldn't spill or tear. Pam, South Bend

Great article! Love the idea of a costume exchange--you get to try something new and don't lose your keepsake costumes! If you're buying a costume retail: buy early! That first sale you see the last week of September/first week of October will likely be the only one until the post-Halloween clearance. Once my son settles on a costume idea for three days straight, we lock it in!
