I've bought a few of the febreze candles and with just one or two in a small room it's not necessary to burn them to enjoy their scent.

Keeping the wicks of the candles short helps with the black smoke problem, but not with all candles.

The Method company make cleaning products without harmful chemicals, and they also make a line of soy candles and air fresheners that should smell great while not being overwhelming.

Using these Febreze candles is unnecessary. Who knows what kinds of chemicals they are liberating into the air? If you're going to burn candles there must be other less expensive jar candles that smell as good for less money.

There are plenty of sites on the internet that have a ton of recipes for creating home made air fresheners (http://www.stretcher.com/stories/03/03may05a.cfm), which cost pennies to make. You can make a Baking Soda and water solution and add a few drops of essential oils of your choice to it for a really cheap alternative. Alternatively, you can leave out a bowl of white vinegar for a few hours and it will also neutralize odors if you can tolerate the smell of the vinegar.

Anything that smells as strongly as Febreze should be a concern. No one needs to inhale all of those chemicals.
