Most of my hobbies are offshoots of our frugal lifestyle--I make bargain shopping a game of getting the best for less. I read extensively on the subject of personal finance. I too have crafted that holiday wreath for a fraction of off-the-rack, and double the satisfaction! Now, my sweetheart's hobbies are $$$--poker and golf! Ouch! Great post!

My favorite, other than blogging of course, is making cards. It's a great example of spending less (if you're savvy about it) on something you would normally purchase. I can make them for about 10 cents each, personalize them to the individual and occasion, and avoid the crowded card aisle/store.

I've also learned that a hobby like counted cross stitching can keep you from snacking in the evenings.....you can't have sticky/greasy fingers while you stitch (smile)....Pam, South Bend

Great post. I've sooo many times wanted to start a new hobby, but by the time you put in the initial investment they become pretty pricy. I've found a good mix right now, cooking (for the family!), blogging, and sewing useful things like diapers or things I can sell (my daughter has plenty, lol) like dolls :)

Blogging (and the photography and writing it entails) is the best hobby I've ever started. Other than that, gardening can be inexpensive and save you money on groceries.

Your hair bow hobby is a great example of choosing a profitable pastime--we love the bows we bought from you!

Digital photography can be relatively inexpensive to start. There are a lot of quality cameras under $300. If you don't spend a lot of money making prints, you can display your photos on a number of free services online including Flickr. You could also start a photography blog with Wordpress.com or Blogger. The initial investment for the camera and a memory card will pay for itself quickly.

My husband loves to go geocaching. It has an initial investment, as you have to buy the GPS, but after that the only thing it costs is gas to get there. If you're lucky enough to have a bunch of caches in your area, though, it's a great hobby for families to do together, not to mention something cheap to do on vacation.

Thanks for all the great info on having a hobby! I should really get back to mine. I have tons of yarn for crocheting, and I'm trying to figure out my sewing machine. I didn't know it was good for my health!
