Staying at home with my toddler, I usually plan to catch up with a girlfriend at one of our houses. One way that worked for a bunch of my friends, was having a "Wine and Whine" night. We took turns hosting the group. The host suppied the wine and some small snacks. The guests brought yummy snacks also! Cheap and fun at the same time!

I also pack fruit or yogurt of my toddler when we go out, that way i don't feel as guilty when he wolfs down the hot dog or french fries!

Great series Amy!
I loved this post...its probably where I "blow" the most money. My toddler is REALLY picky and we almost always throw most of his meal away. The last time we took the boys out to eat, we took food from home from them. Its a huge difference! thanks for the encouragment.

Love your tips, we often bring our own too. I think it's good to bring enough to share like grapes or Little Debbie oatmeal cookies.

I talk to my kids beforehand.

It helped that they didn't like Chick-fil-a nuggets for a long time! :)

Jennifer

Great ideas Amy!! I especially like the "taking your own snack to the food court" especailly for little ones.
Because I am constantly watching what I eat....not just diet but for health issues, I have only had water to drink since April....the cost of soda or coffee can really add up when going out to eat. Another suggestions is having an appetizer for your meal...cheeper and smaller than a full entre. Pam, South Bend

I don't have a lot of social obligations, but my husband and I do enjoy having people over for dinner on occasion.

I love coffee from Starbucks, so I have to be careful that I don't splurge too often!

I would meet with other mom's at local coffee shops. I love coffee, I found I could stay within budget if I ordered a brewed coffee and drank that. I would stay away from the Bagels, pasteries, or sandwiches. It kept my spending modest.

When I would go out with kids I would try to pack snacks, if I forgot and didn't do that I was at the mercy of my children vocally needing SOMETHING and my needing to spend $$$ (more than I would have) to satisfy their need. This would usually happen when I pushed them while running errands.

Love your tips, you make it fun.

Barb C
