I think that teaching children to send thank you notes at an early age in very important....having them tell you what they want to say before they can write them, themselves is great and they can always "illustrate" their thanks....We allow the chidren to play with birthday/Christmas gifts the day they receive them, then the next day they need to write their thank you notes.....as they get older they can't spend any cash or gift cards they recieve untill they have written their thank yous....as grandparents we make sure we always send thank yous to our grandchildren and their parents.....it sets a good example and they of course love to receive mail.
We are at the point where Brandon (he's 6) is put on ignore when he asks for something without saying please or interrupts someone while they're talking.. He quickly remembers (mostly by the look on my face) and chimes in with the please or thank you or excuse me we've been trying to instill in him.. Now my 14 year old on the other hand has regressed..I'm lucky if I get an "umppghh" out of her, normally it's an eye-roll and a tongue click.. The other day I embarassed her by putting her on a "time-out" the manners slightly improved shortly after the 3rd time in the little chair..
