Thanks! You guys are full of great tips for this trip. I am definitely going to pack everything I can to help us save on the dining out factor. Thanks for letting me know about that! I really appreciate it!

Yup- the train is the South Shore. It was crazy busy the last time I took it and didn't really thin out until the bitter end. My husband ended up standing the whole time almost. Maybe a Monday will be slower? :)

I haven't been to the Field in years (in fact, I think only twice since I've been living in Chicago - once when the Dead Sea Scrolls were there and once in the last hour of the chocolate exhibit about 4 years ago). The main things I can suggest is that it's LOTS of walking and like the above poster said, food is expensive. If possible, I would suggest bringing your own lunches and water bottles (you might want to check the Field's website on the water thing, but I think they're allowed).

One thing you may want to be prepared for is a lot of evolution-minded "propaganda" throughout the exhibits. Not all of it is "bad," persay, but you may want to be prepared to discuss a different worldview.

If you're looking for another great free place in Chicago, sometime check out the Lincoln Park Zoo. Admission is free, all the time! Most of the time, if you're there morning/mid-day of a weekday, it's not too busy either. Also, just south of the zoo are the newly-remodeled Chicago History Museum (free on Mondays)and the historic Moody Church (a little plug, since we go there).

Have fun!

OH FUN!!
We took the train (and I'm assuming you mean the South Shore) out from the airport and went and spent the day at the museum. This was, ohboy, 5 years ago, when SUE first came to the museum. We had SO much fun. I can't think of anything that would be inappropriate. The Egyptian exhibit was kinda freaky, cool, but freaky. Rooms full of taxidermy animals, again, a little weird, but very cool.

The dinosaurs are cool and SUE is just stunning.

Have FUN and please post about it when you're back!

Oh, one more thing, not sure what day your going but I do remember the train ride back home was PACKED. It thinned out alot after Michigan City, but man, there were alot of commuters coming home. I get carsick and claustrophobic easily so it was a little intense for me. It probably isn't something that would bother a normal person. :)

Food is outrageously expensive. We just ate there in the museum at the McD's. It cost a crazy amount of $$, but the kids still remember that trip vividly!

We took them out of school for the day and called it our "Ferris Buellers Day Off" Day! LOL!

Have fun, I am sooooo jealous!!
