I love our bread outlet and go every other week to get all of our bread, bagels, muffins, & the occasional package of donuts. The ladies that work there know me by name and they love to get the updates on our family. They adore our Emily and give Ethan special treats when we come. I have loved going there and the great deals that I get.

When I walked in today, I noticed that they had changed all of their signs and increased their prices on every single item in the store. My whole grain bread that I was getting for a dollar was now doubled in price, as was just about everything in the store. The new prices were decent, but could be got at Aldi for the same/less or picked up on sale at other stores.

I paid for the items and expressed my disappointment over the price increase. I asked if the other outlets in the area had increased their prices as well, and they said all of the prices had increased in all of the stores in our area (we live in the Michiana area). The lady knocked a dollar off of the total, but it still ended up being more than I would like to spend on bread.

With gas at a whopping $3.39, I don’t feel inclined to make the effort to go there now.

So, do you have any tried and true bread machine recipes that you would like to share with me? Do you freeze the dough? Do you bake in the bread machine or do you use your oven to bake the bread? I am looking for any insight you guys can give on this, as I need to decrease our spending in this area now.

Please help me!

  1. That stinks :P I have a bread machine recipe I love that is really easy. I make the bread in the machine then cook it in the oven.
    1cup+2Tbsp warm milk
    2 Tbsp butter
    3 cups bread flour
    1 1/2 Tbsp sugar
    1 1/2 tsp salt
    2 tsp yeast
Put all in bread machine in order, making shallow well on top for yeast. Put in machine on dough mode. When done put in bread pan and let rise another 45 mins or until double, then cook at 350 for 45 mins.

  2. I emailed this post to Heather, she might have some good suggestions. I generally use Aldi’s bread, though, I think it’s cheaper than I could possibly make it- although I have not done the math, just some estimating.

  3. I bake bread once a week. Bake it in the oven and then freeze the extra loaves until we need them. I do still buy bagels, tortillas and buns.

Laurel’s Kitchen is a really good book about baking bread, try it from your library and see if you like it.

    Good luck with this.

  4. Hey Amy! I don’t have any bread machine recipes, considering the fact that the bread machine I got at Goodwill is still sitting in my basement LOL But, I do the Kroger shop every Sunday for my bread. It’s the cheapest I’ve ever paid for bread. I love that you told me about those manager specials!

  5. I work full time and go to school, so if I can make all of my family’s bread anyone can. Here is my fabulous whole wheat bread recipe:

Whole Wheat Bread with Flax Seeds

    1 1/8 cups Hot Water
    2 Tbs. olive oil
    3 Tbs. honey
    1/2 Tbsp salt
    3 cups whole wheat flour
1/3 cup toasted whole flax seed (I get mine at Trader Joe’s)
2 tsp. Vital Wheat Gluten (This is optional)
    1 packet Instant Yeast

Put ingredients in bread machine in order (wet on the bottom, dry on top, yeast last). Select the rapid whole wheat setting. I also chose the light crust option, otherwise my bread machine chars the bread but all machines are different.

This makes 1 1.5 pound loaf.

    Hope that helps!

OH! Before I had my bread machine I found, in the supermarket, frozen whole wheat bread dough 3 loaves for $2.49, you might want to keep an eye out for that. If I can figure out the band name I will post it.

  7. I have a tortilla recipe that make 8 tortillas and is easily doubled.

    2 cups flour
    1/2 c. HOT water
    1/4 c. oil

mix together with hands, don’t overmix, just until it is all combined and soft. Divide dough into eight balls, then roll it out with a rolling pin. Place each tortilla in a pan on medium heat. When bubbles start to form, flip the tortilla and brown for just a few moments. Then slide the tortilla onto a plate.

They are great and if stored in a air tight bag or container they can be kept in the fridge for quite a while. They probably won’t last that long though, they are good.

  8. I bake my bread in the oven the old fashioned way. Well actually I was forced to do that because the last time I made some apple cinnamon bread I let my 2 yr old help and he spilt some flour on the coil that goes around the loaf pan and well when it came time to back lets just say a huge flash of light came from the kitchen followed by the smell of smoke. So yeah my 2 yr old killed my bread machine from a few sprinkles of flour. Make this a lesson and never accidentally spill anything on the coil around the pan. Who knew flour could do so much damage.

  9. Amy, most of the bread outlets are slowly closing down. Our Wonder bread outlet (Hostess) manager told me that they will be closing all of theirs over the next couple of years, and I’ve noticed that the Entemann’s are doing the same. They just aren’t making enough money.
Ralph’s-Krogers carries bread for 89 cents a loaf and they sell day old baked goods for 1/2 price,Albertsons has some 1.00 a loaf and usually has the Baker’s good breads on sale at 2 for 3.00, Food 4 Less has some 59 and 69 cents a loaf, our Dollar Tree has 24 oz. loaves for 1.00, and Ralph’s-Kroger has a pkg. of 5 frozen loaves of white or whole wheat that you let rise and bake for only 3.99. (Yummy to make rolls and mini pizzas from, too) Hope this helps. You can also make some really good bread using BisQuick or Jiffy, and online there are lots of great Irish soda bread and easy beer bread recipes that don’t even need yeast. Hope this helps! Have fun experimenting!

  10. I finally got a good recipe for a 1 lb. loaf of whole wheat – the 2 lb. size doesn’t fit well in my breadmaker pan, so I have to take it out and bake in the oven, which is too much work for me!

Put in bread machine in this order (or the order recommended by your machine. I have a very basic Oster/Sunbeam)

    3/4 c. warm water
    1 egg or egg white
    2 Tbs. oil
    2 Tbs. brown sugar
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 c. bread flour
    1 -1/2 c. whole wheat flour
1 tsp. gluten (or leave out, and use 1 c. bread and 1 c. WW flour)
    1 tsp. yeast

    Use basic cycle.

I like this recipe because I don’t have to wait for butter to soften (it uses oil – cheap, and canola or olive oil is healthier than butter or margarine) and only 1 tsp. of yeast (cheap again! I’ve seen some recipes that use 3 tsp. for a 1 lb loaf!)

(A packet of yeast is 2 -1/4 tsp., so if you use packets, use half of one for this recipe.)
