I will tell you a little secret- the off brands are made by the name brand companies- they bottle it for them- so to speak- in cans, and no they don't make any changes to the formula- they merely change the cans or bottles going through the line- have witnessed it first hand when "visiting" some of their bottling plants with my husband who is a truck driver. He even asked them about it and asked if they made changes and they said nope, just the label! Makes sense really, the big name companies are the same ones who make Aldi brands, Sav-A-Lot brand and the store label brands- remember the recalls recently- name brand and then all the store brands- because the few major packaging plants make the majority of the goods.

My husband swears he has a very distinguished palate when it comes to sodas so for a family activity we had a taste test. Blindfolded, I set out five different brands of root beer (our favorite), Mug, A&W;, Big K, Barqs and Diet A&W.; He especially hates diet pops but the majority favorite was Big K if you can believe it. He couldn't pick out the diet one either, which was a triumph of sorts for me.
